Two Trump stories in USA today

Mike Pence says 'duty' and James Madison convinced him to defy Trump and certify election on Jan. 6

...During a question and answer session that followed a formal speech at the University of Iowa, the young man rose to ask Pence who convinced him "to buck President Trump's plan and certify the votes?"

"James Madison," Pence said, referring to the fourth president of the United States often considered the 'father of the Constitution.'

Brad Raffensperger, GOP target of Trump ire in Georgia, warns of potential for more election violence

The Georgia [Republican] election official who defied pressure by Donald Trump to "find" votes and overturn his 2020 election loss in the state says the brutal condition of American politics could lead to more protests and violence like the Jan. 6 insurrection by Trump supporters.

In an interview with USA TODAY for his new book, "Integrity Counts," Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger criticized attempts to forge "new revisionist history" about the Jan. 6 insurrection. People are trying to cast it as a largely peaceful protest rather than what it was, he said: A violent attempt to re-install Trump in the White House.

"What really bothers me the most is that people are now trying to minimize what happened on January 6," said . "I find that really, highly objectionable ... People need to know people did that."

Disagree, he said, but do it "respectfully."

"That's what we're called to be," Raffensperger said, not like the kinds of people who triggered the attack on the U.S. Capitol: "It's not to call people all sorts of names and threaten them with violence. That's what the mob does."

freitasm:

These people are waiting for an announcement from JK Jr and have t-shirts and flags supporting Donald Trump with JFK Jr as VP.

A small problem is JFK Jr died in 1999. But they believe he faked his death because Hillary wanted to kill him before he ran for Senate.

Yes. That's the people who vote Republican.

Oh yay, Glen Youngkin of the Republican Party becomes the new Virginia governor, in a state Joe won by 10% a year ago. Sigh.

The Atlantic: The Virginia Results Aren’t the Victory Trump Thinks They Are

In winning the Virginia gubernatorial race, Republican Glenn Youngkin—and other successful GOP candidates in the Old Dominion and elsewhere—nodded toward the kinds of themes that the former president has accentuated. After all, it’s his party now. But in winning while keeping Trump at arm’s length, Youngkin also showed the possibility of a party that isn’t Trump’s any longer.
...
When Steve Bannon hosted a rally for Republican candidates, to which Trump called in, Youngkin made sure he was elsewhere. The Washington Post reports today that Youngkin and Trump spoke on the phone repeatedly during the campaign, but tellingly, no one leaked that information until the votes were in.

Note in the States, defamation cases against public officials almost always fail. However it does cost a lot of defend, plus it almost always reveals' more skeletons in the closet.

Having said that, James Savage, the Delaware County Voting Machine Warehouse Supervisor, may meet all elements of a successful case. (Public figures defamation is much hard to prove)

Slate: A New Anti-Trump Defamation Suit Shows One Way Forward Against the Big Lie

Civil courts are becoming the most powerful weapon against Donald Trump’s Big Lie. That’s in part because the select committee investigating Jan. 6 has stalled due to obstruction from Steve Bannon and others under investigation, and because the Department of Justice has refused to go after the ringleaders of the mob that rioted at the Capitol. As a result, civil courts have proved to be one of the only legal venues for directly confronting the people intent on destroying democracy.

The defamation cases are already piling up. And a fresh lawsuit was just filed in a Philadelphia-based county court on Monday against Trump, his attorney Rudy Giuliani, and other purveyors of the lie that Pennsylvania Democrats stole the election for Joe Biden.

James Savage, the Delaware County Voting Machine Warehouse Supervisor, alleges that Trump, Giuliani, Trump lawyer Jenna Ellis, a right-wing legal organization that backed Trump’s attempts to overturn the election, and a pair of Republican poll watchers defamed him by suggesting he had personally added votes to Biden’s tally. Savage says that he has lost job prospects, his reputation in his community has suffered, he’s been personally accosted in the street, he and his family have received death threats, and he has suffered two heart attacks as the result of the Trump team’s fraudulent allegations.

This one is hard to categories as a "win" or a "loss," given how both Trump and some democrats have both called this a witch hunt.

The answer to "does Russia blackmail politicians?" is the same as "is the Pope Catholic"?

The investigator is Trump appointment. Biden has allowed the investigation to continue.

Still we'd have never heard of possible pee-pee tapes without Steele and the .

Washington Post: Igor Danchenko arrested, charged with lying to FBI about information in Steele dossier

An analyst who was a primary source for a 2016 dossier of allegations against Donald Trump has been arrested on charges that he repeatedly lied to the FBI about where and how he got his information, officials said Thursday.

Igor Danchenko’s role in providing information to British ex-spy Christopher Steele, who compiled the accusations about Trump in a series of reports, has long been a subject of investigators’ scrutiny and became a particular focus of special counsel John Durham.

Steele presented the dossier to the FBI, and it was part of the basis for secret surveillance court orders targeting former Trump adviser Carter Page as the FBI investigated possible ties between the 2016 Trump presidential campaign and Russia.

Durham’s probe into that FBI investigation has also led to an indictment of a lawyer connected to Democrats, on a charge that he lied to the FBI. In addition, a former FBI lawyer who worked on the Page surveillance application later pleaded guilty to altering an email related to that case.

If it all turns out that Trump really was the innocent victim of a witch hunt, I think I might shoot myself.

A feelgood story to start the day  🙂

The Washington Post - She flew in a private plane to the capital to support Trump. Now she wants donations to cover her legal fees.

22 Jan 2021

The Washington Post - She said she wasn’t going to jail for Jan. 6, citing ‘blonde hair white skin.’ A judge sentenced her to 60 days behind bars.

today

A Texas real estate agent who bragged after Jan. 6 that as a blonde, white woman she would not be going to jail for joining in the assault on the U.S. Capitol by a pro-Trump mob was sentenced Thursday to two months of incarceration.

It was one of the harshest penalties imposed to date on a participant in events at the Capitol who was found guilty only of a petty offense.

Oh this silly cow. I remember her. Maybe she should have kept her big loud yap shut and she wouldn't be going to jail.

I'm just gonna make a blanket statement to all the people that are calling me and texting me. You win!!! I'm going to prison. So you don't need to contact me anymore. Pop champagne and then rejoice. But just leave me alone. Thank you

Not so cocky and arrogant now, are we? Also I see she's (ironically) setting up an "anti bullying" nonprofit organisation. As long as they don't pick on her or her idol (Trump), right?

This is good news indeed - for common sense and decency :D

Wow, a pretty heavy sentence for "one count of parading, demonstrating or picketing in the Capitol."

Don't piss off a judge, and before sentencing at least pretend to be remorseful. After sentencing, it's too late.

That is if you are a mere mortal. If you're Steve Bannon, don't expect any jail time for a contempt charge.

Tucker attacks Trump, tests the waters for 2024

The Young Turks

In a surprising turn from Tucker Carlson’s usual behavior, the Fox News host went at Trump’s neck on his internet show by saying it was “appalling” that Trump has yet to donate any money to his supporters that were arrested in connection with the January 6th Capitol Riots.

I don't think he ever will, either.

As per the real estate agent above who went to jail - she asked Trump via Twitter for a pardon after the Capitol riots in January. When such a thing was (obviously) not going to be forthcoming, someone (correctly) replied, "your idol doesn't care about you". He doesn't care about the people above, either. He only cares about number 1.
