Is part of the problem that Trump still has enough of a following to mean that for someone else to win the nomination they are going to have to be extremely good? I just think even if someone gets the nod ahead of him he will still have enough loyal followers that the party base will be divided.

I still struggle with the fact that Trump and Biden were the ‘best’ that either party could come up with, both are completely unsuited to running the US in my opinion.

freitasm: Amateurs... Churchill drank 42,000 bottles of champagne

Yes, but a hamster makes even Winston Peters look like a tea-totaler, They can drink the equivalent of 21 bottles of wine a day. (mentioned in article: A hamster would love a bottle of Everclear 190/95% alcohol)

No matter how Trump dies, conspiracy nuts will either say:

He's not dead

"he faked it himself."

"he's being held in captivity"

"he's cryonically frozen waiting to rise again."

"he's became divine / God / went to a higher plane of existence"

---------------------------------------
He was already dead, and replaced a clone / actor / robot / hologram

"replaced by [insert list of left wing groups] to make Republicans look bad."

"replaced by [insert list of right wing groups] to bring on the apocalypse."

"replaced by aliens to make way for the invasion."

"he died of COVID in 2020"

---------------------------------------
He is dead, but (much like his skin tone) it was not natural

"he was killed by [insert world's longest list of suspects]."

They're not the best, they're the ones with seniority, it's their turn to have a go at being El Prez.

In the 1980s we used to make fun of the animated corpses that ran the Soviet Union (remember e.g. Whoops Apocalypse). Their leaders were actually younger than the last two presidents of the US.

Having said that, the whole country is so broken that anyone less mild than Grandpa Joe wouldn't have been acceptable, and even he's having trouble getting his party behind him. Can you imagine what would have happened if they'd run AOC against Trump?

That would have been interesting. I always thought that if Bernie had gotten the nomination in 2016, he would have given Trump a real run for his money.

I just can’t help feeling that country is going to be completely munted until someone incredible comes along to unite the centre block of voters, or bring those that have drifted to the extremes back towards the centre. I can’t see anyone on the horizon that would come even close.

That would mean the prospect of the US electing a Jewish president. Can you imagine him saying "God bless the United States of America" and it's not the Christian evangelical true God? Another surefire way to hand victory to Trump.

I don't agree. John F Kennedy's was the first Catholic elected president, and of Irish descent.

There was a lot of hatred / distrust for both of these groups.

I remember several white Protestant Americans, and some even of Irish descent, specifically reminding me that JFK was Catholic, which inherently couldn't be trusted.

However JFK had a 70.1% approval rating, comfortably the highest of any post-World War II president. By comparison, the average for all presidents between 1938 and 2012 is 54%.

A stroke would be karma. When wished by another? Seems like pointing the bone.

Mr Incredible would have to be a Republican. No Democrat no matter how awesome will be able to achieve any sense of unity or dull extremism while the current generation of Republicans is alive. When the majority of the base are literal halfwits whose only end goal is "owning the libs", they will believe anything they are told by the GOP or whoever their latest cult leader is.

Sure I want him to suffer. He deserves it. I just don't want to be the agency.

On a purely practical note, if someone shot him, a lot of people would suffer. There would be riots in the streets and pitched battles between armed militias and the National Guard. There actually might be a real revolution. A stroke is much better. It eliminates his ability to captivate audiences and leaves the religious right in disarray as they can't pretend it was not an Act of God.

Problem is, if that happened to Trump tomorrow, there is no shortage of dropkicks who would happily step up to the plate to replace him. Some might even be vaguely competent.

Still wouldn't work because anyone who could do this would be a RINO to the Retrumplicans and thereby automatically disqualify themselves. For the next round, if the Retrumplicans win the next election they'll go even further in ensuring they don't get pushed out again. If the Democrats win (unlikely) the Retrumplicans will get even more upset about the loss than they are now and radicalise further.

They really are screwed. Political commentators have talked about how the irreconcilable differences will work out, and are weighing in not for a full-scale second civil war that the accelerationists are hoping for but instead a Northern Ireland-style ongoing insurgency. I can't see the next election going well in any case.
