gzt: False electoral college declarations signed by prominent republicans:

USA Today: new questions emerged this week about whether efforts in various states, including Arizona, to create slates of fraudulent electors were similarly coordinated.

On Dec. 14, 2020, a group of prominent Republicans, including the party's chair, Kelli Ward, former lawmaker Anthony Kern and incoming legislator Jake Hoffman signed a document declaring themselves the state's electors, in favor of Trump.

There's no way to describe all the strings except as a clear attempt to subvert the United States of America's election. Is that the same as an attempted coup? I think it's close enough. Add all the strings together and this was a coup attempt that failed.

It didn't fail. It just got delayed. Whether or not it failed is yet to be determined.

Rikkitic: It didn't fail. It just got delayed. Whether or not it failed is yet to be determined.

The attempt clearly failed. The legislature continued to function. The votes were counted. The result was certified in each state and certified in the legislature by the vice-president.

Next time around it's possible some aspects may become more severe. An escalation of threats into violence against polling places and election workers for example. I can't think of any first world democracy that has faced a challenge like this.

Interesting interview with one of the journalists who uncovered Watergate - he mentions Trump and how Republicans are now trying to roll back voting laws, affecting mostly African Americans and minorities in the US.

LA Times: Hannity had an unholy alliance with Trump. The 1st Amendment still protects him

Fox News star Sean Hannity is an improbable and undeserving poster child for 1st Amendment protections...

As a confidante, counselor and enabler of the former president, as well as one of Fox’s highest-rated prime time commentators, Hannity presents in many ways the antithesis of the argument for 1st Amendment protections. He once told the New York Times, “I never claimed to be a journalist.” Nevertheless, he should be treated as one, not for his own sake but that of his more legitimate media colleagues.

The House committee investigating the events of Jan. 6 sent a letter to Hannity last week asking for his cooperation with its investigation. That drew return fire from Hannity’s lawyer that the request “would raise serious constitutional issues including 1st Amendment concerns regarding freedom of the press.”

Then over the weekend, former Trump Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham, who had testified to the Jan. 6 committee days earlier, told the Washington Post about a disquieting alliance between Hannity and the 45th president.

A House committee investigating the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol insurrection has requested an interview and information from Fox News host Sean Hannity.

According to Grisham, Hannity continually weighed in with Trump — offering policy advice the president often elevated over the opinions of his White House advisers. And Hannity wasn’t the only Fox News personality with special White House privileges. Laura Ingraham, Lou Dobbs and Jeanine Pirro enjoyed similar access and influence, which staffers learned to groaningly accept from the cable-TV addicted Trump.

Particularly troubling is Hannity’s apparent role in the events of Jan. 6, and his mendacious on-air commentary during the same critical stretch. The House committee has texts from Hannity to Trump Chief of Staff Mark Meadows demonstrating his regular contact with the White House and the president himself.

As the letter to Hannity from Jan. 6 committee chairman Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) states, the texts strongly suggest advance knowledge of the insurrection.

LA Times: Letters to the Editor: Why the 1st Amendment doesn’t shield Sean Hannity and Donald Trump’s exchanges

Letter #1, from an attorney

Does Fox News host Sean Hannity deserve 1st Amendment protection for his private discussions with former President Trump? [The previous article] cites the landmark freedom of the press case New York Times vs. Sullivan and comes to what I believe is the unwarranted conclusion that Sullivan should protect Hannity from having to disclose such private conversations.

Importantly, [the Sullivan case] does not protect discussions from being introduced as evidence; it protected journalists from being sued for inaccurate or defamatory articles unless the journalist knew of the inaccuracy or defamatory facts prior to publication and did so anyway.

Obviously, if someone confessed a crime to a journalist, that confession should not be barred from admissibility just because it was told to a journalist. Hannity’s discussions with former President Trump about the possibility of criminal intent for Jan. 6 should be disclosable.

The 1st Amendment should not be used as a shield to protect a criminal’s statements just because they are made to a journalist.

Letter #2

The 1st Amendment protects reporters and their sources. By advising Trump, Hannity has made himself an actor in the drama, not a reporter. He wasn’t cozying up to Trump to get information. He was making the story, not reporting it.

New York Times vs. Sullivan protects public figures when their reputations are damaged by reckless false reporting on their conduct. It says nothing about what happens when the journalist chooses to be part of the story instead of sticking to reporting.

I found this article funny, because Florida Governor Ron DeSantis criticized Trump's early handling of pandemic .

Pot calling kettle black...

New York Times: Who Is King of Florida? Tensions Rise Between Trump and a Former Acolyte.

For months, former President Donald J. Trump has been grumbling quietly to friends and visitors to his Palm Beach mansion about a rival Republican power center in another Florida mansion, some 400 miles to the north.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a man Mr. Trump believes he put on the map, has been acting far less like an acolyte and more like a future competitor, Mr. Trump complains. With his stock rising fast in the party, the governor has conspicuously refrained from saying he would stand aside if Mr. Trump runs for the Republican nomination for president in 2024.

...That long-stewing resentment burst into public view recently in a dispute over a seemingly unrelated topic: Covid policies. After Mr. DeSantis refused to reveal his full Covid vaccination history, the former president publicly acknowledged he had received a booster. Last week, he seemed to swipe at Mr. DeSantis by blasting as “gutless” politicians who dodge the question out of fear of blowback from vaccine skeptics.

Mr. DeSantis shot back on Friday, criticizing Mr. Trump’s early handling of the pandemic and saying he regretted not being more vocal in his complaints.

Wouldn't it be funny if Ron challenged Trump in the primary? I can't stand either of them so wouldn't really care, but would be interesting to watch them debate each other.

Trump really is in bed with the crazies, isn't he? Thinking JFK Jr is coming back to be his VP if he runs again?

Also: “Why don’t they talk about the guy that killed that girl Ashli Babbitt?” said Cece Fager of Mesa, Ariz., referencing the Jan. 6 protester who was shot and killed by a Capitol police officer as she and others tried to break down a door that led to the House Speaker’s Lobby. “It’s all a cover-up. Our country is so divided, it’s sad.”

Yeah. It's divided because of lies and crap like this!!

Ashli Babbitt was "suicide by cop."

She was also carrying a large backpack, that could have been a bomb.

She broke through a locked french door, its clear window, and climbed through.

The police had their weapons drawn for at least a minute, pointing at her. They gave many, many warning to stop or they were going to shoot.

What did she think would happen?

That's slightly different. Suicide by cop is when someone wants to commit suicide but can't bring themselves to do it directly (it's estimated that a significant proportion of accidental shootings, "it went off while he was cleaning it", in the US are actually suicides but presented as accidents to deal with the stigma associated with suicide in the US). I doubt deliberately getting herself killed was the reason this person broke into the Capitol.

DESANTIS BETTING THAT REPUBLICANS WANT A STUPIDER VERSION OF TRUMP

TALLAHASSEE (The Borowitz Report)—As he explores a bid for the 2024 Republican Presidential nomination, Governor Ron DeSantis is betting that G.O.P. voters are looking for a stupider version of Donald J. Trump.

According to a source close to DeSantis, the Florida Governor has decided to “run to the stupid of Trump” to pick up the support of voters who now consider the former President too intellectual.

“When Trump recently said that he got the booster, that was the last straw,” the source said. “In the eyes of a lot of Republicans, Trump is basically Fauci now.”

“Trump’s surrender to science is a slippery slope,” the source added. “It’s only a matter of time before he starts flirting with geography and grammar.” As DeSantis stakes his claim to the dumber-than-Trump lane, he spoke at a fund-raising event over the weekend.

“Donald Trump now states that one plus one equals two,” the Governor told his audience. “I think the American people should be free to decide that for themselves.”

The Washington Post - House Jan. 6 committee subpoenas Giuliani, Sidney Powell

breaking

The House committee investigating the insurrection of Jan. 6, 2021, issued subpoenas Tuesday to members of former president Donald Trump’s outside legal team who pursued and disseminated unfounded claims of mass election fraud, including Trump’s former personal attorney Rudolph W. Giuliani, former White House aide Boris Epshteyn, and lawyers Jenna Ellis and Sidney Powell.

The four individuals we’ve subpoenaed today advanced unsupported theories about election fraud, pushed efforts to overturn the election results, or were in direct contact with the former President about attempts to stop the counting of electoral votes,” Chairman Bennie G. Thompson (D-Miss.) said in a statement.

Again only Trump only wanted the brightest and best (◔_◔)

An American Social Security number, "Social" for short, is also called a "Tax Identification Number" .Many Americans are rightfully paranoid when someone on the phone asks you for it, because it's needed for identity theft

Slate:Capitol Rioters Called Pelosi’s Office Looking for Stuff They Left Behind on Jan. 6

When Capitol Hill staffers were busy trying to clean up on Jan. 7, 2021, people in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office suddenly started answering an unusual set of phone calls.* Some who had taken part in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot started calling Pelosi’s office to find out where they could recover any items they had left behind.

People who had stormed the Capitol called “asking whether there was a lost and found because they forgot their phone there, or they left their purse or what have you,” Rep. Jamie Raskin told Insider. The staffers passed on the calls to law enforcement.

“The officers quickly got on the phone and said, yeah, just give us your name, your address, your Social [security number], you know, and we’ll tie up those loose ends,” the Democratic lawmaker from Maryland said.
