You might not realize how even the most ill-informed American knows about the tennis star and anti-vaxxer Novak Djokovic ejection from Australia.

New York Times: Why Trump and DeSantis Are Talking About Australia

For those who haven’t been following the conversation on the right about Australia, Donald Trump’s recent entry into the chat might have been a little baffling.

On Friday, the former president put out a statement that included only this tweet, from the conservative columnist Scott Morefield: “I don’t think it’s far-fetched to say that if Donald Trump hadn’t won in 2016 and appointed three SCOTUS justices, the U.S. would literally be Australia right now.”

Coming just after the Supreme Court’s conservative majority blocked President Biden’s vaccine mandate for large businesses, the first half of Morefield’s tweet speaks for itself. But the second half, the context-free swipe at Australia, requires some explaining.

Over the past few months, Australia — Western-allied, democratic Australia — has become a byword among conservatives for an over-the-top approach to combating the coronavirus pandemic. The government there has used aggressive vaccine mandates, quarantines, border restrictions and lockdowns to keep Covid-19 deaths below 3,000 people in a country of 25 million, with some trade-offs in personal freedoms.

The Washington Post - Supreme Court rejects Trump’s request to withhold Jan. 6 materials from House committee investigating Capitol riot

breaking

The Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected former president Donald Trump’s request to block release of some of his White House records to a congressional committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

The order turned aside Trump’s request to block the records release while the case continues through the courts regarding his assertion of executive privilege.

It means there is no legal obstacle to release of the materials from the National Archives ...

Donald will be sweating a bit more than usual today.  🙃

"The people came to my rally, biggest rally ever, biggest rally ever, much bigger than Sleepy Joe's, and they were so impressed they stayed for hours, stayed for hours, biggest rally ever".

And then the biased media mis-reports it by claiming they only stayed because they were stuck there.

Ron DeSantis opens five free monoclonal treatment centers with Regeneron obtained from the federal government:

Beast Editorial: Last month, DeSantis held a press conference outside Ocala Medical Center with a sign reading “Early Treatment Saves Lives” and touted monoclonal antibodies as the answer to the COVID crisis. His surgeon general, Joe Ladapo, described vaccines, masks, and testing as a “trifecta” of “lunacy.”

Apart from expensive, only problem is that it's almost useless against Omicron. Vaccination and masks are sensible and cheap prevention in comparison. Unless the medical staff are particularly unethical I think they won't be doing much at all in an Omicron outbreak.

"One America News" goes by "OAN". It's a TV show on the American satellite TV provider AT&T. The TV service is called "DirectTV". 90% of OAN revenue is from DirectTV,

OAN is rated by Ad Fontes Media as further right-wing than Fox, just slighter better than Breitbart News (the driving force behind the right-wing Breitbart News was Trump advisor Steve Bannon)

AT&T Chairman of the Board William_Kennard is African American.

Daily Beast: OAN Host Begs Viewers to Dig Up ‘Dirt’ on AT&T Chair After DirecTV Drops Network

After DirecTV dropped far-right channel One America News, one of the fact-free network’s hosts urged his viewers to dig up “dirt” on the chairman of AT&T, the parent company of the satellite TV provider.

“Whatever it is,” OAN host Dan Ball pleaded on Monday evening, listing hypothetical scandals like extramarital affairs or anti-white racism.

DirecTV announced on Sunday that following a “routine internal review” it had decided not to renew its contract with Herring Networks, the owner of One America News

...“You bring me concrete evidence of whatever it may be: cheating on his taxes, cheating on his wife, saying racial slurs against white people,” Ball added, unsubtly referencing the fact that Kennard is Black. “Whatever it may be. Find it for me. Bring it, and we will air it.”

He wrapped his plea by saying “everybody’s got dirty little sins and secrets they're hiding” and that Kennard “deserves to have his exposed” over DirecTV deciding to cut ties with One America News.

...Some prominent conservatives, meanwhile, have rallied around OAN in the aftermath of DirecTV’s decision. Senator Rand Paul (Republican-Kentucky), for instance, claimed on Twitter this week that he plans to cancel his subscription to the satellite service because they dropped the cartoonishly pro-Trump channel.

Yes, I remember OAN (and Newsmax), two infrequently-watched news channels prior to Trump becoming President. Afterwards, when all the did was stroke his ego, he was singing their praises from the rooftops.

The two of them flatly refused to acknowledge Biden won and kept calling Trump president, loooooooong after the election was over. They're probably still doing it today, over a year later.

PS: Ron is an idiot, but Trump loves him because (surprise, surprise) he strokes his ego, tells him Biden is useless, and blah blah blah....

I guess the fact so many people are dying of coronavirus in Florida isn't working against him, his approval ratings appear to be quite high (somehow?).

New York Times: Fact-Checking McConnell’s Comparison of Black Turnout Rates

Hours before a failed effort by Democrats to pass a voting rights bill in the Senate, Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky was asked in a news conference on Wednesday for his message to voters worried about access to the polls during the midterm elections.

Mr. McConnell described those worries as a ginned-up controversy, and misleadingly cited data on voter turnout.

“Well, the concern is misplaced, because if you look at the statistics, African American voters are voting in just as high a percentage as Americans,” he responded.

The Washington Post - Opinion: The Supreme Court’s order against Donald Trump is even worse for him than it appears

today

The court’s decision [on 19 Jan] was a brutal, and personally stinging, loss for Trump. ...

Trump lost the case in virtually record time.

He sued the committee and the National Archives on Oct. 18, lost in the district court on Nov. 9, lost in the court of appeals on Dec. 9 and lost in the Supreme Court on Jan. 19.

And so, today, the Jan. 6 committee has hundreds of documents Trump desperately wanted kept under wraps. ...

But it wasn’t just the speed with which he lost that was so merciless; equally harsh, if not more so, was the substance of the rulings against him.

... in effect, an unambiguous blanket holding by the Supreme Court that presidents who incite insurrections in office don’t get to invoke executive privilege.

[edit]  ...  and to add insult to injury, all three of his court appointees voted against him.
