Guess which party thought it was a good idea to sell out and give this guy citizenship?

Hint: blue.

You have two criminals in two cases in an American court.

Both have committed multiple crimes. One is poor and stole less than $100.

The other one is rich, conned people out of millions and provoked multiple crowds into murderous frenzies.

Which American will get the extreme sentence?

The Guardian: Trump’s incendiary Texas speech may have deepened his legal troubles, experts say

I doubt it. Teflon Don has spent his lifetime pushing, or ignoring, the boundaries of expected behaviour and gotten away with it pretty much every time. I mean, he incited an insurrection against his own government and nothing much has happened to him. Calling for "protest" as he has done is par for the course, barely even worth a mention compared to other things he's gotten away with.

The NY Times - McConnell Denounces R.N.C. Resolution Censuring Jan. 6 Panel Members

Senator Mitch McConnell joined a chorus of Republicans distancing themselves from the committee’s action, describing the Capitol riot as “a violent insurrection.”

Feb. 8, 2022

WASHINGTON - Senator Mitch McConnell, the minority leader, pushed back hard on Tuesday on the Republican Party’s censure of Representatives Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger and its characterization of Jan. 6 as “legitimate political discourse” ...

The remarks from Mr. McConnell, the normally taciturn Kentucky Republican, added to a small but forceful chorus of G.O.P. lawmakers who have decried the action that the Republican National Committee took on Friday, when it officially rebuked Ms. Cheney and Mr. Kinzinger for participating in the House investigation of the Jan. 6 attack, accusing them of “persecution of ordinary citizens engaged in legitimate political discourse.”

Mr. McConnell repudiated that description, saying, “We saw it happen. It was a violent insurrection for the purpose of trying to prevent the peaceful transfer of power after a legitimately certified election, from one administration to the next. That’s what it was.”

Thank God, at least one senior Republican is willing to stand up and speak the truth. Now if his buddy Kevin would do the same thing...

It's like the Republican party can't leave Trump alone/can't get enough of him.

Problem is, do voters feel the same way? I don't doubt Trump would have a good chance of winning the Republican primary if he ran again - but could he win the general election?

Poor old Mitch. Must be damned uncomfortable growing a backbone at his age.

Oh, wait. Could be a strap-on.

Trump crowned? No faux King way!

The Guardian: Bannon compared Trump escalator ride to Leni Riefenstahl Nazi film, book

Steve Bannon compared Donald Trump’s infamous escalator ride to announce his candidacy for the White House to Triumph of the Will, the Nazi propaganda film made by Leni Riefenstahl, according to a book published on Tuesday.

[New York Times Journalist] Jeremy W Peters shows the former campaign chair, White House strategist and close Trump ally repeatedly invoking Hitler when discussing the 45th president.

... Bannon, a far-right gadfly with a huge audience for his War Room podcast, worked his way back into Trump’s good graces, securing a pardon on fraud charges and playing a central role in advancing Trump’s lie that he lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden because of electoral fraud.

Bannon has pleaded not guilty to contempt of Congress, a criminal charge arising from his refusal to cooperate with the January 6 committee which could result in jail time.

In Peters’ book, he is quoted as saying “Trump did not win in 2016 … Hillary Clinton lost” and complaining that Trump never recognised as much. He also complains that during the 2020 election, aides showed Trump misleading polling data in order to mask his deficit to Biden and thereby avoid outbreaks of fury.

“It’s like showing Hitler fake armour divisions when the Reichstag is burning down,” Bannon says. He makes the comparison to Riefenstahl when discussing how Trump kicked off his takeover of the Republican party with his campaign announcement in June 2015.

Riefenstahl is best remembered for Triumph of the Will, her landmark film about Hitler centered on the Nuremberg Nazi Party Congress of 1934. As Trump descended the elevator at his New York skyscraper, Peters writes, the film “flashed” through Bannon’s mind.

“Triumph opens with a shot of Hitler’s aircraft high above Nuremberg as it begins descending through the clouds,” Peters writes. “When it touches down in a field, the massive crowd that has assembled to greet their leader rejoices. Hitler smiles as he drinks in the adulation.

“Bannon thought that Trump’s entrance looked strikingly similar, and that he was witnessing someone with an uncanny sense for manipulating public perception.”

The crowd which greeted Trump for his maiden speech as a 2016 presidential candidate was largely made up of actors, paid to pretend to support him.

New York Times: Trump Gives Documents Improperly Taken From White House to Archives

Former President Donald J. Trump last month handed over to the National Archives 15 boxes of documents, letters, gifts and mementos that he had taken with him when leaving office but that he had been legally required to leave in the custody of the federal government, officials said on Monday.

..The Washington Post reported earlier that Mr. Trump had handed over the boxes to the National Archives.

...Mr. Trump handed over the materials after several months of back and forth between his lawyers and the National Archives, which houses presidential records and eventually makes many of them public.

The National Archives said in a statement that it obtained the boxes in mid-January and that Mr. Trump’s lawyers told the agency that “they are continuing to search for additional presidential records that belong to the National Archives.”

The disclosure is yet the latest example of a lack of strict adherence by Mr. Trump and some of his aides to the laws intended to preserve government documents and shield classified information from foreign enemies.

Despite his criticism of Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential campaign for using a private email server while she was secretary of state, Mr. Trump was notorious for tearing up White House documents and leaving them in the trash or on the floor. Politico reported in 2018 that some administration officials even had to tape back together shredded documents to ensure the White House complied with federal record keeping laws.

During the administration, top White House aides — including Mr. Trump’s daughter Ivanka and son-in-law, Jared Kushner — were found to have used personal email accounts for government work.

More recently, in response to the House select committee investigation into the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol, Mr. Trump’s former chief of staff, Mark Meadows, provided hundreds of pages of documents, some of which came from his personal cellphone. The committee said it had questions about why Mr. Meadows had used a personal cellphone, a Signal account and two personal Gmail accounts to conduct official business, and whether he had properly turned over all records from those accounts to the National Archives.

In late January, the National Archives said that among the documents that Mr. Trump sought to block from handing over to the committee were ones Mr. Trump had torn up.

The Guardian said that? Pretty disappointed in them, they're usually more careful in their reporting.

(The candidacy announcement -> actors claim is at about the Fox News level of reliability, alleged this and supposed that and stringing together lots of very circumstantial evidence).

It was denied at the time. Then confirmed by the guy that denied it, then denied by the guy that guy blamed. Then semi-admitted by the contracted PR firm who claims it may possibly have hired some actors as 'coordinators' for the event.

https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-aide-says-paid-actors-for-2016-campaign-announcement-2021-7

Personal opinion - probably happened in some form or another. At minimum coordinators getting into the spirit of the event as per expectation. How many people were at the event in total? The PR guy says his firm hired 50 coordinators, and claims an attendance of 'thousands'.

Trump posted this about Spotify's Joe Rogan, in regards to extensive historical use of the "N-word" and "Planet of the apes" scandal.

Trump deleted it later

“Joe Rogan is an interesting and popular guy, but he’s got to stop apologizing to the Fake News and Radical Left maniacs and lunatics.

How many ways can you say you’re sorry?

Joe, just go about what you do so well and don’t let them make you look weak and frightened.”

Oh everyone who disagrees with Trump is "fake news" or "the radical left". I wonder which category Mitch McConnell would fall under?

Melania Trump, former first lady and third wife of Trump, says she'll be posting to Parler exclusively

So what is Parler? It was booted off the Internet a year ago.

Vox: Parler, the “free speech” social network, explained

...You may have heard more about Parler in the runup to the 2020 election when conservatives touted it as an alternative to Twitter and Facebook. Parler, an app and website that promises free speech online, has been around since 2018. Right-wing influencers — from Ivanka Trump to the governor of Nebraska — have encouraged those frustrated with alleged Big Tech censorship to join them on Parler.

At first glance, Parler does look a lot like Twitter and Facebook. Open the app, and there are profiles pushing doubt about the 2020 election’s results and declarations that the mainstream tech platforms are targeting free speech. With just a few clicks, it’s easy to find even more extreme right-wing voices and hate speech. Overall, the site appears like an amalgamation of some of the most odious factions of social media, centralized on one platform that’s attracted millions of users....
