I read that he was actually quite f'd off that some of his former staff were pleading "the fifth" as it made them look "weak" and like they had done something wrong, whereas (in Trump's telling anyway) everyone on his side is 100% innocent (until they cross him) and it's all a Democratic scam...or something.

Apparently Eric, the dumb(er) one, doesn't have a problem with it.

I suspect the children are more flagrant in their fraud than even daddy.

I'd make a small wager that Eric is going to be the first one in orange leisurewear.

Business Insider: Eric Trump and Allen Weisselberg invoked their 5th Amendment rights more than 500 times in Trump Organization probe, court filing says

Eric Trump and Allen Weisselberg invoked their 5th Amendment rights more than 500 times in Trump Organization probe, court filing says

That’s according to a new court filing that Attorney General Tish James’ office made asking a judge to enforce subpoenas targeting former President Donald Trump and his two eldest children, Donald Jr. and Ivanka.

James’ office is spearheading a years-long civil investigation into the Trump Organization and its business dealings. Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump were subpoenaed on December 1 as part of the investigation, and James also wanted the former president to sit for a deposition on January 7, which he did not do.

Eric Trump appeared for a deposition in October 2020, and according to Tuesday’s court filing, he “invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination in response to more than 500 questions over six hours.”

Weisselberg sat for a deposition in September 2020.

“At testimony held on September 24, 2020, after answering a number of preliminary questions, Allen Weisselberg invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination to more than 500 questions over five-and-a-half hours,” the filing said.

In response to James’ announcement of the legal filing late Tuesday, Eric Trump tweeted, [Attorney General] “Letitia you can not escape your own words. This is all window dressing for your abuse of office and ethical misconduct (which we are prosecuting you for) and northing more than a PR move to revive a political career after your gubernatorial disaster.”

The Washington Post - Opinion: Trump’s luck may finally be running out

today

... Trump’s accounting firm, Mazars, sent a letter on Feb. 9 to the Trump Organization terminating its relationship with Trump

The letter was astounding in many respects.

Mazars said that 10 years of Trump’s financial statements, from 2011 to 2020, “should no longer be relied upon,” and that Trump should tell that to the people he gave them to.

The accountants explained that they reached this conclusion based upon court filings previously made by the New York attorney general, as well as the accountants’ own investigation and other sources.

And then they quit.

Under the “totality of the circumstances,” Mazars wrote, “we have also reached the point such that there is a non-waivable conflict of interest with the Trump Organization. As a result, we are not able to provide any new work product to the Trump Organization.”

Oh, and by the way, Donald and Melania’s tax returns are due in four business days - but, hey, we promise “to facilitate a smooth transition to your new tax preparers.” Best regards, Mazars.

Translated from legal-accountingese, the letter was an unmitigated disaster for Trump, far beyond his possibly having to file late returns.

By saying the statements “should no longer be relied upon,” the accountants effectively announced, "You misled us".

By “totality of the circumstances,” they likely meant, "The prosecutors investigating you, and the case they’re making is serious." ... ...

Roll Call: Judge allows lawmaker Jan. 6 lawsuits against Trump to proceed

A federal judge ruled Friday that Democratic lawmakers and Capitol Police officers can move forward with civil lawsuits against former President Donald Trump in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on Congress...

[one lawsuit] sued Trump, Giuliani and others; [another] sued Trump...; and two Capitol Police officers sued Trump.

A total of 11 House members are plaintiffs in the lawsuits under the Ku Klux Klan Act, passed in 1871 in the wake of the Civil War, which bans any conspiracy to prevent members of Congress from discharging the duties of their office.

Judge Mehta allowed some claims to go ahead against Trump and two right-wing extremist groups, but dismissed other claims against Trump....

Judge Mehta concluded that, at this early stage when he must view facts in the light most favorable to those who filed the lawsuit, there is a plausible conspiracy involving the former president and two right-wing extremist groups that entered the Capitol building on Jan. 6 “with the intent to disrupt the Certification of the Electoral College vote through force, intimidation, or threats.”

In the analysis, Mehta points to Trump’s actions at the rally, Trump’s response to the violence at the Capitol and more.

“From these alleged facts, it is at least plausible to infer that, when [Trump] called on rally-goers to march to the Capitol, the President did so with the goal of disrupting lawmakers’ efforts to certify the Electoral College votes,” Mehta wrote. “The Oath Keepers, the Proud Boys, and others who forced their way into the Capitol building plainly shared in that unlawful goal.”

Mehta also concluded that it is reasonable to infer that Trump, who mentioned the Proud Boys during a presidential debate, “knew that these were militia groups and that they were prepared to partake in violence for him.”

Trump “thus plausibly would have known that a call for violence would be carried out by militia groups and other supporters,” Mehta wrote, and Trump would have known his Jan. 6 rally would be viewed as a call for collective action.

Mehta did not find arguments from Trump’s lawyers persuasive, including that he said the rally-goers would be “peacefully and patriotically” marching to the Capitol.

The Washington Post - "Exclusive" - Trump properties in talks to host lucrative Saudi golf events

today

Former president’s courses at Doral and Bedminster could strike a deal with a new league backed by the kingdom, which stands accused of the murder of Jamal Khashoggi and other human rights abuses.

Former president Donald Trump’s company is angling to host events at his golf courses for the controversial Saudi golf league,  potentially handing Trump a lucrative business partnership with an oppressive regime he defended as president. ...

As president, Trump frequently defended the Saudi government even as it committed a wide range of human right abuses, including the 2018 murder of Washington Post contributing columnist Jamal Khashoggi and the imprisonment and execution of gay citizens. ...

EDIT:  The Post could, of course, be accused of negative bias here - just because the Saudis murdered one of their contributors, and dissolved his dismembered corpse in an acid bath.

ABC News: Florida's Republican Governor DeSantis gains popularity with Trump-like anti-'woke' agenda

Republican Governor Ron DeSantis' recent battle with what he considers the "woke agenda" is pushing Florida further to the ideological right and helping position him as a possible contender for president, pitting him against none other than Donald Trump.

As DeSantis' popularity rises among Republicans, DeSantis has been closely mirroring the former president's language. In December, when he announced that battle, DeSantis called critical race theory "state-sanctioned racism" and termed related training "indoctrination."

Nearly a year before, Trump had slammed the teaching of the origins of slavery in America as "twisted" and a form of brainwashing.

DeSantis is arguably setting himself up to be the most "MAGA"-friendly governor in the Republican pack, a safe position for a potential GOP presidential candidate.

In a recent CNN poll, DeSantis is the only possible Trump-alternative candidate who netted more than 20% approval from respondents.

I personally think the guy is a joke, but I have a feeling if he (somehow) became the Republican nominee at the next election as opposed to Trump, he would (highly likely) lose. Which is great.

He has to get people to want to join, though. Hardly anyone followed his blog.

I guess the thing with Twitter was it had an established user base. He basically has to start from scratch, all over again.

I'll give it some time to see what the uptake is like before passing judgement. Remember he's been off Twitter for over a year now, so I daresay a lot of his followers would have moved on.

It's also self-defeating for him, as a narcissist he's unable to cope with anything other than mass adulation and he also has no patience, so when few people bother to turn up initially he'll shut it down again before it even gets started, as he has with previous attempts to do something like this.
