quickymart: A number of Republicans are telling Trump to hold off announcing a 2024 bid, at least until this year's midterm elections are over.

This CNN article lists 3 selfish motives for an early candidacy bid by Trump:

1) Joe Biden is at a low ebb in polling
2) Ron DeSantis is gaining steam
3) The January 6 committee is doing damage

To this I would add another possibility:

4) Trump may think himself safer from prosecution if he is a declared presidential candidate

Trump never wanted the presidency. After wanted the impressive formal activities or ceremonies, and no responsibility.

Friend of mine heard an interesting podcast by some guy, noticed a book by him in the library, and grabbed it to read. The cover looked interesting so I skimmed the synopsis inside the dust jacket... which contained enough alt-right keywords to set off serious alarms bells. Looked at the back cover and it had endorsements by a bunch of far-right nutcases like Hannity and a few others.

Anyway, I thought I'd have a look inside, and chose the chapter "You are not Nazis", obviously written for the purposes of reassuring his target audience. The first few pages were a Fox-style polemic explaining why he wasn't a Nazi, so the chapter title should really have been "Why I am not a Nazi".

When you feel it's necessary to devote an entire chapter of your book to reassuring people that you're really not a Nazi...

Incompetence is a great excuse... John Bolton says he ‘helped plan coups d’etat’ in other countries

John Bolton, a former national security adviser to Donald Trump and before that ambassador to the United Nations under George W Bush, said on Tuesday he helped plan coup attempts in other countries.

He said: “While nothing Donald Trump did after the election, in connection with the lie about the election fraud, none of it is defensible, it’s also a mistake as some people have said including on the committee, the commentators that somehow this was a carefully planned coup d’etat to the constitution.

“That’s not the way Donald Trump does things. It’s rambling from one half-vast idea to another plan that falls through and another comes up.”

His host, Jake Tapper, said: “One doesn’t have to be brilliant to attempt a coup.”

Bolton said: “I disagree with that, as somebody who has helped plan coups d’etat, not here, but you know, other places. It takes a lot of work and that’s not what [Trump] did. It was just stumbling around from one idea to another.

“Ultimately, he did unleash the rioters at the Capitol, as to that there’s no doubt, but not to overthrow the constitution, to buy more time to throw the matter back to the states to try and redo the issue.

The Guardian - Trouble for Trump as committee makes case Capitol attack was premeditated

14 July  [no paywall]

Donald Trump is facing growing legal peril as the House January 6 committee lays out a case that appears increasingly geared to making a criminal prosecution all but inevitable.

The panel’s seventh hearing on Tuesday argued that Trump instigated an attack on the US Capitol that was premeditated rather than spontaneous and that he cannot hide behind a defence of being “willfully blind”.

The committee also sought to show an explosive convergence between Trump’s interests and those of far-right extremist groups, although critics said the case fell short of direct collusion.

Even so, the late revelation that Trump had tried to contact a person talking to the committee about potential testimony – raising the prospect of witness tampering – was only likely to compound pressure on the Department of Justice to investigate the former president. ...

Say what you like about the left, I've never heard the "we're too stupid to have done that" argument used.

Alex Jones and Fox News have both used the "we're for entertainment; we're not journalists" argument.

Trump and his cronies list of stupid, self defeating acts is too long to list, but Rudy Giuliani best exemplify it.

Couple of things I've seen in my news feed over the last few days:

This does not bode well for Steve Bannon: https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2022/07/leaked-audio-steve-bannon-trump-2020-election-declare-victory/

I agree with this story, in fact I think Trump is scrambling to find a fall guy (that's not him) as quickly as possible: https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/mark-meadows-jan6-trump-cheney-1382261/

The Washington Post - The 5-Minute Fix -

[op-ed piece]

today

Donald Trump definitely wants to run for president in 2024.

Now it seems it’s just a matter of when he announces. ...

But Trump’s decision about whether to run - and the timing of when he announces it - comes with some big risks for him and his party. ...

  • He’s not that popular:  Trump trails Biden in polls in key swing states.

Plus, there’s a noticeable apprehension among some Republican base voters about whether Trump is what they want right now. ...

  • Republican strategists worry he’ll distort the midterm elections: Could Trump ignite Democratic voters if he announces he’s running for president just a few months before the midterm elections?

So much of politics is about voting against something or someone, and Trump could give demoralized Democrats a reason to go vote.

I hope he announces right now and totally screws up the midterms for as many Republicans as possible. He would be the gift that none of them want.

I'm confused: Did Trump want to grab his White House staff, because he could do anything; they had great legs?

These clowns are always projecting.

Charges: Man lit his camper on fire, defaced own garage to appear targeted due to Trump flag - CBS Minnesota (cbsnews.com)

A Brooklyn Center man faces federal charges after he lit his own camper on fire to make it look like a politically-motivated crime, and then allegedly filed several fraudulent insurance claims.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says Denis Vladmirovich Molla, 29, is charged with two counts of wire fraud in connection with the fire that took place on September 23, 2020.

Molla reported to police that someone set fire to his camper "because it had a Trump 2020 flag displayed on it," and spray painted the Antifa or anarchy symbol, "BLM" and "Biden 2020" on his garage door. The U.S. Attorney's Office says Molla actually lit the fire and defaced the garage himself.

Court documents show that Molla then "submitted multiple insurance claims seeking coverage for the damage to his garage, camper, vehicles, and residence caused by the fire."

Molla submitted insurance claims totaling more than $300,000, receiving only $61,000 in the process. He then accused his insurance company of "defrauding him." Court documents show he also yielded more than $17,000 from two GoFundMe accounts.

Is this really true? Could Trump get off scot-free by announcing another run for president this year (awfully early)?

The plot thickens ...

The Washington Post - Secret Service erased texts from Jan. 5 and 6, 2021

14 July 2022

A government watchdog has accused the U.S. Secret Service of erasing texts from Jan. 5 and 6, 2021, after his office requested them as part of an inquiry into the U.S. Capitol attack, according to a letter sent to lawmakers this week.

Joseph V. Cuffari *, head of the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General, wrote to the leaders of the House and Senate Homeland Security committees indicating that the text messages have vanished and that efforts to investigate the Jan. 6, 2021, attack were being hindered.

The Department notified us that many U.S. Secret Service (USSS) text messages, from January 5 and 6, 2021 were erased as part of a device-replacement program,” he wrote in a letter dated Wednesday and obtained by The Washington Post. ...

The Secret Service’s text messages could provide insight into the agency’s actions on the day of the insurrection and possibly those of President Donald Trump. ...

The chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee said lawmakers “need to get to the bottom of whether the Secret Service destroyed federal records or the Department of Homeland Security obstructed oversight.” ...

*  Cuffari is a Trump appointee "who has faced significant criticism since he took over the office".   😟
