A series of co-ordinated terror attacks have hit London in three different areas, with reports of dozens of casualties from stabbings and pedestrians mown down by a vehicle.

The London Bridge area was in lockdown after witnesses said 20 people were run down by a van and pedestrians were attacked with knives at 10.08pm.

There were also multiple reports of rapid gunfire in what one witness described as “Westminster all over again”.

We are one week from being there, and would have been at one of those two locations. It's getting scary!

Maybe time to test the cancellation cover on your travel policy....

Nope, then the terrorists win. We will be taking extra precautions whilst over there, but ultimately, you can't control every situation.

I was actually being tongue in cheek.

However, I disagree that the terrorists 'win' if you stay home. These ones 'win' if they kill you.

I expect that compared with say 30 years ago, the chance of sudden unexpected death is lower from the drive to the airport, the flights, and the entire stay in the UK.

Edit: those who want to hear some youtube stuff - youtube this lady called brigitte gabriel, she explains the basis of islam in a few videos; obviously that's debatable unless we have some Islamic scholars here to enlighten us

Note I'm not making these things up, I lived among muslims for 18 years, lived with 3 for 2 years under the same roof, so n=3

1 of them have no trouble blowing up people if "called" to it

1 of them would strongly consider but not sure if he'd do it

1 of them thinks that's a crazy thing to do

I have not kept in touch with them however ... to see if they have changed since they left the local gathering

Yes I've struggled to find some unbiased people - it's either one side or the other.

This is how I think of it. The laws of the country. NZ laws for example used to have a sedition law, that was repealed in 2007. It apparently still has a blasphemy law. That is not yet changed. It also has a new law for about 10 years, no hitting children.

So over time, ideas change. Acceptable ideas need to change with time. But it comes from the top down.

Obviously if you go to the say NZ islamic info centre, they would have the ideas that is current with times. FOr example, many christians (I dare say more than 50% from local encounters) do not believe the universe was made over 7 days and the earth is not 6000 years old, and no part of the bible was written by Moses, and gospels were not written by jesus or his immediate followers, etc. That's based on scientific evidence for example. The info centre will say you can't kill muslims that decide to be an atheist or marries a buddhist. It will also probably say you can't have 4 wives because polygamy is illegal, and that you can't marry a 14 year old for example.

But I would like you to go and ask the HQ in Mecca some hard questions and tell me what the answer is. As far as I know they keep slaves as property and do whatever they wish to them. And don't you dare suggest getting away with apostasy.

FOr me it's quite simple. The HQ has not condemned any of these acts. If you don't condemn it you are not against it. If you are not against it, you are for it. It's quite funny how there are pockets of people all over defending something that the HQ themselves are not really appearing to defend, deny, enlighten, educate. Nothing.

The fact that you think Mecca is the HQ of Islam, it is bizarre. Muslims are currently observing Ramadan, if their HQ is in Mecca, their fasting would have start on the same day. Look for Carla Power, telegraph journalist who actually went to go and spend time among the Muslims. She in fact went through the Quran with a Muslim scholar. She pointed out how Islam spread to many parts of the world i because of the "decentralized" nature of the religion.

There is a reason why most who join ISIS recruits tends to be the young one, new convert, "less religious" etc. She suggested that the lack of knowledge and understanding of Islam is why they got attracted to the nasty group like ISIS.

Don't get me wrong they're good people ok, your neighbour, your etc, all good people. Something happens to one of two of these good people but the authorities can't figure it out! You really need some culture experts in your counter terrorism expert group. I'd say start from the top down.

Dude, Ramadan is observed from the start of the new moon to the next new moon. They fast when the sun is out. Ie the official sunrise to sunset of your locality. No food no water no swallowing saliva no showers. Night shift is good. Obviously if you live in the north pole and it's winter in Ramadan then you're free to eat anytime you like. Don't ask me what happens if it's summer. Probably just die or observe it some other time or migrate.

I'm pretty sure Ramadhan is defined by sighting of the new moon. So if you cannot see the moon in your region, you start fasting at a different day when you see it. That's why. Some use calculations because it's more precise ...due to .... umm ... science. Vs cloud cover -> cannot see moon.

In long summer, local council says it is acceptable to use some other times to fast, but the underlying statement is sunrise to sunset.

These points show that some areas decide to follow ideas consistent with the times instead of remaining archaic.

Oh thanks for repeating what I have said prior except for the part "archaic vs science". Do you know how much the Muslims contributed in Astronomy? If it was not for them,

I live literally one bridge down from this. There are people in this thread that are a lot more worried about this than I am. The general response I'm seeing from Londoners is stuff you, I'll keep enjoying this city thanks. Super impressed with a 2 minute police response time, and 8 minute take down. Hard to get much better than that in a city this size.
