No doubt a very valid fear.

Also: https://edition.cnn.com/2022/09/01/politics/alaska-sarah-palin-loss-republicans-midterms/index.html hopefully this is telling...

And Lindsey Graham does have to testify now, although I imagine being the Trump boot-licking coward that he is he'll just plead the fifth amendment to everything he gets asked 🙄

Biden about to address the nation on Trump and Maga. I have it on CNN but it will be carried by most outlets.

That was some speech. I would even term it Biden's Churchill moment. Very impressive, especially for Biden.

The Washington Post - Biden warns ‘equality and democracy are under assault,’ calls out Trump by name

breaking

President Biden, who has often refrained from naming his predecessor in speeches, called out Donald Trump by name on Thursday as he warned that equality and democracy in the United States “are under assault.

Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundation of our republic,” Biden said in Philadelphia.

Not every Republican embraces their extreme ideology,” Biden said. “I know because I’ve been able to work with these mainstream Republicans. But there’s no question that the Republican Party today is dominated … by Donald Trump.”

And that is a threat to this country,” the president warned.

I believe it’s my duty to level with you, to tell the truth, no matter how difficult."

And here, in my view, is what is true: MAGA Republicans do not respect the Constitution. They do not believe the rule of law. They do not recognize the will of the people, [they] refuse to accept the results of a free election.”

Biden warned that “MAGA forces” are “determined to take this country backwards, backwards to an America where there is no right to choose, no right to privacy, no right to contraception, no right to marry who you love.”

They promote authoritarian leaders, and they fan the flames of political violence,” Biden warned. ...

For a long time, we’ve told ourselves that American democracy is guaranteed,” Mr. Biden said. “But it’s not. We have to defend it. Protect it. Stand up for it. Each and every one of us.”

Vote! Vote! Vote,” he chanted at the end.

The NY Times - Ex-N.Y.P.D. Officer Gets 10 Years for Jan. 6 Attack, Longest Sentence to Date

01 September

A retired New York City police officer who swung a metal flagpole at a Washington officer during the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol was sentenced on Thursday to 10 years in prison, the longest sentence yet in a case stemming from the riot.

The retired officer, Thomas Webster, was the first person charged in connection with the riot to defend himself before a jury with a self-defense argument.

He was convicted in May of all of the felony charges he faced, including assault.

This was completely predictable ...

The Guardian - Donald Trump says he plans to pardon US Capitol attack participants if elected

breaking

Donald Trump said on Thursday he would pardon and apologize to those who participated in the deadly attack on the US Capitol on January 6 if he were elected to the White House again.

I mean full pardons with an apology to many,” he told Wendy Bell, a conservative radio host on Thursday. “I will be looking very, very strongly about pardons, full pardons.”

Five people died in connection with the attack and more than 140 law enforcement officers were injured.

More than 875 people have been charged with crimes related to January 6, according to an NPR tracker. 370 people have pleaded guilty to crimes so far.

I remember seeing something on CNN about this a few months ago, Chris Cillizza did a piece about it. Can't find it now but from memory he was saying if Trump did run (and win) in 2024, by the time he got into office most of the rioters sentences would have finished anyway.

This was one I did find: https://edition.cnn.com/2022/01/31/politics/trump-pardon-jan-6-rioters-reelected/index.html

And a Trump ally saying they should not be pardoned (quite rightly, too!): https://www.axios.com/2022/01/30/trump-pardon-jan-6-rioters

But if I understand right, if you plead guilty a pardon doesn't mean anything, does it? Anyway, this crap is just (yet again) appealing to the MAGA base - I imagine a lot of Republicans were quite turned off by the riot and his actions during and after it.

Trump's time is over. He just doesn't know it yet. Not to say there won't still be dangerous Trump clones, but Trump himself is done.

I hope you're right. Ron De Santis might be the next one to watch, I think - while he has never said the election was "stolen" or "fraudulent", he is making appearances at rallies for election deniers.

From TFA:

Trump also said he was offering financial support to some of those involved in the attack. [...] It was not immediately clear what the extent of Trump’s financial assistance was.

It's now been revealed that he's selling them Trump memorabilia at cost. At cost I tell you, he's not making a dime off it (apart from the 10% handling fee and $500 voluntary donation to the Re-elect the Greatest President of All Time fund).

As is usual with Trump, things are even worse that we thought ...

The Guardian - FBI materials seized from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home included 90 empty folders

03 September

Among the items the FBI retrieved from Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort this month were 90 empty folders marked classified or for return to the White House staff secretary or a military aide, according to a detailed inventory of items made public on Friday.

The inventory – unsealed by a federal judge overseeing the former president’s request to get a so-called special master to determine what materials the justice department can use in its investigation – provided the fullest picture to date of what Trump had retained.

In itemizing the contents of boxes of seized materials, the inventory, put together by the justice department, showed the FBI retrieved 71 empty folders from Trump’s office and 19 empty folders from a storage room when agents executed a search warrant at Mar-a-Lago earlier this month.

The empty folders carried one of two designations, according to the inventory: some files had “Classified” banners, while other files were labeled “Return to Staff Secretary/Military Aide”, appearing to indicate that highly sensitive documents were not returned as designated.

The startling discovery immediately raised the prospect that some of the US government’s most closely guarded secrets could remain unaccounted for, even after the FBI went through Mar-a-Lago and retrieved vast amounts of materials from the property.
