The House committee investigating the Capitol riot is said to be planning a vote to call the former president to testify under oath, an aggressive move that is likely to set off a court battle.

WASHINGTON - The House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol plans to issue a subpoena to former President Donald J. Trump to question him about his role in events that led to the violence that consumed Congress, a remarkable escalation as the panel begins wrapping up its inquiry.

Representative Bennie Thompson, Democrat of Mississippi and the chairman of the committee, foreshadowed the move at the beginning of its hearing on Thursday - possibly the panel’s final public session - saying that lawmakers could vote on “further investigative action” during the meeting.

It may cause delays, but it is also allowing more information daily to be put into the News churn cycle.

It is also racking up huge legal bills, taking up large amounts of Trumps time, as well as that of his children and supporters.

Loosing time, attention, and the continuous announcements of more law suits is harming Trump considerably, perhaps that is part of the low turn out at the last protest rally.

The Guardian: Trump a narcissist and a ‘dick’, ex-ambassador Sondland says in new book

In a new book, the former US ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland defends his conduct around Donald Trump’s first impeachment, derides Democrats for their investigation of Trump’s attempt to extract political dirt from Ukraine – and calls his former boss a narcissist and a “dick”.

Sondland also takes aim at Mike Pompeo, Trump’s secretary of state, who is now a potential candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024.

Sondland criticizes Pompeo for firing him over his impeachment testimony and allegedly reneging on a promise to pay his legal fees. Sondland also hits Pompeo for not inviting Volodymyr Zelenskiy, the president of Ukraine, to Washington but inviting the Russian foreign minister twice.

Sondland, a hotelier, donated $1m to Trump after the 2016 election and became EU ambassador two years later. His memoir, The Envoy: Mastering the Art of Diplomacy with Trump and the World – “pause here to allow 10,000 career diplomats to roll their eyes”, the Washington Post quipped in May...

Retelling Trump’s first impeachment, Sondland describes efforts to push Ukraine to investigate Trump’s enemies, including the role of Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s personal attorney.

He rejects criticism where Bolton, the national security adviser, mentioned Sondland was helping to “cook up” a “drug deal” regarding Ukraine.

In testimony, Sondland described Trump’s attempted quid pro quo: a White House visit for Zelenskiy and the release of military aid in return for investigations of targets including Joe and Hunter Biden.

Sondland now insists there was nothing unusual about this, writing “Quid pro quos happen all the time”

EDIT : Trump, the first president to be impeached twice, joins a small group of predecessors who have been served with a subpoena by Congress: Richard Nixon for tapes while in office; John Tyler, John Quincy Adams and Harry Truman as part of inquiries after leaving office.

That's not quite the burn-the-witch it appears to be, what he said was that he's never voted left in his life and that, at the time, he would have voted for the right-wing candidate because he was following a lifetime habit, not that he's a Trump supporter. Honest but not the politically appropriate thing to say under the circumstances, but then the smiling assassin was never good with social cues.

The NY Times - U.S. Asks Court to End Special Master Review of Files Seized From Trump

The Justice Department asked an appeals court on Friday to end a special master review of thousands of documents that the F.B.I. seized from former President Donald J. Trump’s Florida estate, arguing that a federal judge had been wrong to intervene in its investigation into Mr. Trump’s hoarding of sensitive government records.

In a 53-page brief before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, in Atlanta, the Justice Department broadly challenged the legal legitimacy of orders last month by Judge Aileen M. Cannon, who blocked investigators from using the materials and appointed an independent arbiter to sift them for any that are potentially privileged or Mr. Trump’s personal property.

The Justice Department already succeeded in persuading a panel of the Atlanta-based court to exempt about 100 documents marked classified from Judge Cannon’s move - a decision the Supreme Court declined to overturn this week.

In its new filing, the Justice Department asked the appeals court to reverse her order for the remaining 11,000 or so documents.

“This court has already granted the government’s motion to stay that unprecedented order insofar as it relates to the documents bearing classification markings,” the filing said. “The court should now reverse the order in its entirety for multiple independent reasons.”

Trump responded on Friday to a promised subpoena from the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 assault with a lengthy, rambling letter that attacked the panel’s work, reiterated false claims of widespread voting fraud and presaged a potentially bruising battle over whether he could be compelled to testify about his role in the riot and his efforts to subvert the 2020 election.

In a 14-page missive that did not address whether he would comply with the subpoena, Mr. Trump perpetuated the same lies that had fueled the attack and boasted about the size of the crowd that had amassed to hear him speak before marching to the Capitol and staging a violent siege.

The former president has indicated privately to aides that he would be willing to testify to the House panel but would like to do so live ... a prospect that would prevent video of him from being clipped or edited in a manner he dislikes. ...

CBS News: New York attorney general asks court to block Trump Organization from moving assets

New York State Attorney General Letitia James asked a judge Thursday for a preliminary injunction to prohibit the Trump Organization from transferring any assets without court approval, claiming the company "appears to be taking steps to restructure its business to avoid" liability in a massive lawsuit filed by James' office in September.

James' office said in Thursday's filing that the Trump Organization has "continued using practices they knew to be improper or fraudulent" since the lawsuit was filed September 21. The suit alleges a widespread effort to manipulate property valuations by former President Donald Trump, three of his children, and their eponymous company, and seeks $250 million and an end to the company's operations in the state.

"We have repeatedly provided assurance, in writing, that the Trump Organization has no intention of doing anything improper," said the attorney, Alina Habba.
