In every US eleection its around 50% that didnt vote for the winner. Same goes for many.

 

 

Trump has been elected president when his opponent had about 3 million more votes than he did - he holds a record as the biggest loser to become president.

 

The next biggest loser to become president was George "W" Bush in 2000.  Perhaps evidence that the popular vote should be what matters.

Same has happened here. There are many ways to skin a cat, and while overall they would trend the same general way, there will be anomalies. They change electoral boundaries that changes the vote.

 

The popular vote as the only vote would be fair, and FAR less time consuming and costly. The ONLY vote, none of this tick this tick that, just one vote for one party. For the regions, they share the same vote percentage. Each party will still have reps everywhere, but the ability to govern is mandated to only the winning party, they can do what they want, as they have the majority. AKA democracy

We all need to tweet Drumpf once a day to remind him that he lost the popular vote. It's obviously a sore point for him. And this isn't the first time he's tweeted this sentiment.

Yup, the rules which allow 4% of the US voters control 8% of the electoral college votes.

 

Sometimes you surprise me with your responses - they seem conservative in terms of "well that's the way it works - so we should just accept it".

 

If that was the way the world should work, then we'd have been at risk of being slaves to a class of wealthy overlords, and expected to be loyal to them to the extent we'd fight to the death to support them in their squabbles between themselves.  Oh wait...

The US Presidential voting scheme has been deliberately set up to ensure that the states retain a measure of power, particularly that the smaller states wouldn't be swamped by the populous ones. At the time, that was thought to be "fair".

 

What's really needed is an explicit definition of who the President is supposed to represent; people or states. Not that it will actually make much difference; currently the President doesn't represent either of those; he represents wealth and power.

Fair is fair. There are many ways to decide who wins. Say they went popular vote, one party wins 51% to 49%, which is pretty typical there. So the winning party wins. That % applies to the States as well. If the popular vote applies, it applies to all. If you want to apply differing and/or many rules, you end up with a complicated mess, which we have now. States can have their own elections, popular vote for Senators, for those laws that are State managed. The other laws are as mandated by the country popular vote

You read me wrong, all I am saying is he played by the rules and won. Now if the questions is 'is the USA electoral system well and fair' I will say a resounding no it is not. It is like they had a series of meetings to determine the most god awful system, then make 50 times more complex and generally

 

make a dogs breakfast of something that does not need to be hard.

Nukes are like dogs. One incurs expense and time. Two or three do not incur two or three multiples thereof.

 

 

 

Personally I feel no more safe with n+x% where n is how many we have today than I do with n.

 

I do feel safer where n is more than zero on our side though, especially nowadays.
