Coil: Heck not everyone is immediately aware of the situation or could even understand the scale of it. Especially here in NZ the last thing you’d think is if you’re wearing a hunting jumper and go pickup a kid from school you’ll get arrested for being a terrorist.

On a scale of dumb to stupid, his situational awareness was very low then.

I'd cut the guy some slack. The only reason I knew about the event was because I am in front of a computer all day. I spoke to my neighbor around 7 pm yesterday, he'd been cutting wood all day (in a camo t-shirt, no less!) and hadn't heard anything about it.

Fred99: Sorry but I don't accept that in a civilised society a police officer allegedly making the extraordinary threat of summarily executing a citizen for looking at him should be left uninvestigated. Quit with the intellectual and moral laziness. No one is saying that the circumstances don't need to be taken into account if the allegation is proven to be true.

Edit: Made clear to whom my reply was directed.

Investigate for a few seconds, perhaps make a statement condemning that any police officer should ever say such a thing, and move on.  It's his word against a sworn officer, unless that officer admitted to saying what's alleged, it's going to be a glorious waste of time and probably just a platform for those with anti-police sentiment to grandstand.

Sure I agree with what you say that I highlighted above, but it's probably unresolvable, highly unlikely to ever be carried out (summary execution as described), and I can understand that in the heat of the moment, people overreact.

Edit to add that our police did a superb job in arresting the perpetrator yesterday - without gunning him down in a hail of bullets - which would have been the inevitable outcome in much of the world.

Oh give me a break. It's too much effort for the IPCA to go around interviewing other police officers nearby or to see if there are other witnesses? Again, quit with the intellectual and moral laziness. There's no place in any civilised society for that kind of comment. If it was made, the cop should be porportionately disciplined.

From NZ Herald:

Broadcaster Sky TV has pulled Sky News Australia from screening here after it aired footage of the fatal Christchurch shootings. Sky's Kristy Martin said that after "yesterday's tragic events, we made the decision to remove Sky News Australia from our platform while disturbing footage of the shootings was being shown to avoid causing any distress to our viewers".

"It will remain off air until we are confident the footage won't be shared."

The arrest appears on its face perfectly reasonable. I'd however have serious concerns if his allegation that the police officer made the threat that if he dared look at the cop again, he'd shot, is true. Whatever the situation was, that's not in comport with the law. That allegation should be investigated.

I do agree with that.

Whatever the reason for his choice of wardrobe, the guy should be kissing the ground in gratitude that he didn't get shot. Not just by that one officer, but by any cop in that situation. In another place he might well have been. Maybe he didn't realise what was happening. Maybe he was going hunting later. Maybe a lot of things. But he is still alive and he should be damned grateful our police are less trigger-happy than some.

I agree with this at an editorial level. But also, I suspect Sky may be as concerned about the legal ramifications of distributing terrorist propaganda as distressing their viewers.

(on Sky pulling Sky News off air for airing footage of the shooting)

I think Sky's reaction is a bit silly. There's a mile of difference between a legitimate news organisation showing appropriately edited footages of the shooting to, you know, report on the news as opposed to right wing nutjobs searching out for the whole clip to auto-eroticise themselves with. Any news coverage of these types of events is potentially very distressing in traumatic times. In the grand scheme of things, this isn't a massive deal but it's still a silly reaction IMO.

There's no way that there would have been other witnesses (not police).  If this guy wants to make a complaint to the IPCA, he should go ahead.  It'll be a complete and utter waste of time.

Don't come the " intellectual and moral laziness" BS to me.  I'd be very concerned if police officers were to be "disciplined" based only on the word of one aggrieved and probably shell-shocked witness.

I didn't now til well after, maybe  2-30pm or 3pm, I was immersed in a work issue. My sister didn't know, rung my brother he didn't know. Wife didnt. So I can get that. As to the guy complaining, well wrong place wrong time, tough luck. Im not sure how long into it his arrest was though

Fred99: How do you know it's only his word if you don't investigate the allegation? What if, heavens forbid, his allegation was true and there are other cops prepared to back that up? You're the one who's prancing around declaring that he should have no right to be heard on this. And you're a disgrace for suggesting this in a country with the rule of law. We can't have a society where the so called moral majority just decides cart blanche to ignore the allegations of unpopular people just because "we" judge this to be a waste of time.

On a different line of thought, people who say "This is not New Zealand" has been oblivious to signs all over the country... Like this one:

Nationalism sentiment has been growing everywhere, people feel like they are excluded because they can't get ahead in life so they funnel their rage into something they can identify themselves with - a "common enemy" even if the enemy is imaginary.
