100%. We see times where someone asks for privacy, we give that, no hesitation. if a politician asks for that, its the same, leave them alone.

It's actually worse than that. We shouldn't discuss it regardless of whether they ask for privacy or not. There is no reason for anyone to be discussing someones (mental) health unless they ask them to.

For private citizens certainly. It is considerably more complex when we are talking about public figures in very stressful jobs. Serious health issues are directly relevant as to whether they are capable of doing the job they profess to wanting to do.

It's not completely black and white. It doesn't mean that it needs to be done in a callous way but the rules are a bit different for public figures.

I have some reservations about this. The private life of a private person should be private business. A politician seeking election is another matter. If the politician will be making or influencing decisions that affect the rest of us, then the rest of us have some right to be informed of matters that might affect the politician's decision-making. I'm not sure exactly where this line should be drawn, but an oversimplified example might be someone who suffers from bipolar disorder. I happen to have known someone who did. The person can be the sweetest, most rational, sensible human being imaginable when under medication, but can equally do wildly irresponsible 'crazy' things when in a manic state. I have no problem being represented by someone like this who is receiving proper treatment. But I would want to know about their condition so I could make proper allowances for behaviour that might otherwise seem inexplicable.

It come back to the concept of the public interest. Is the information relevant to them doing their job? If it's not then we don't need to know. If it is significantly relevant then we do.

For all the silly whining about the New Zealand media they do a pretty good job with this. What politicians are cheating on their spouses isn't material to them be effective MPs or ministers. Serious illness is relevant to how they can do their job.

The level of media speculation and commentary has been unwarranted imo.

At the time when Muller requested Walker's resignation, and later Boag's resignation from the party - I was thinking the next poll would show a huge leap forward for Muller and National after that decision. That kind of integrity is rare in politics.

Aside from the topic my advice to anyone who might feel themselves to be in any position - consult a good doctor for a physical checkup before making any decisions.

Perhaps this topic should be closed, Todd is gone, he is old news. Open the new Judith topic to discuss current National Party leadership and policies moving forward.
