The NY Times - Trump Is Picking Fights in Iowa, No Matter the 2024 Consequences

11 July 2023

Iowa may be the most important state on Donald J. Trump’s early 2024 political calendar, but he hasn’t been making many friends there lately.

He lashed out at Iowa’s popular Republican governor, Kim Reynolds, and then his campaign informed one of the state’s politically influential evangelical leaders that the former president would skip a gathering of presidential candidates this week in Des Moines.

The back-to-back moves on Monday ... show the extent to which Mr. Trump acts as if he is immune to traditional political pitfalls ...

Bob Vander Plaats, an influential evangelical leader in Iowa, said he would most likely not endorse Mr. Trump in 2024. ... He said that “half the battle” in Iowa was showing up, and that Mr. Trump had fallen short so far on that score.

Reuters - US DOJ says it no longer deems Donald Trump immune from E. Jean Carroll lawsuit

NEW YORK, July 11 (Reuters) - Donald Trump suffered a legal defeat on Tuesday as the U.S. government reversed its earlier position that the former president could be immune from the writer E. Jean Carroll's $10 million defamation lawsuit against him.

In a letter to Trump's and Carroll's lawyers, the U.S. Department of Justice said it no longer believed Trump acted within the scope of his office and employment as president in June 2019, when he denied having raped Carroll in a Manhattan department store dressing room in the mid-1990s.

The department late in Trump's presidency had reached an opposite conclusion ...

Seems fair. I don't think anyone ever claimed Clinton was acting within the scope of his office when he was (ahem) in his office. Although likewise his strongest supporters were claiming it was a giant direction-wing conspiracy at the time, until he admitted fault a few years later as I recall.

That depends on your source. Vlad Tepes is a national hero in Romania for fighting the Ottomans, Ivan the "Terrible" is the result of a mistranslation, and Nero's reputation has been excessively tarred by having his history written by the Christians he persecuted.

They also forgot to list Samson the Sadducee Strangler, Silus the Syrian Assassin, and several seditious scribes from Caesarea.

The Economist magazine is taking a detailed look at Trump V2.0

A professional corps of America First populists are busy preparing for it. If they are successful, America will be left with a weakened state and an emperor-president wielding unchecked power.

Most of the articles are paywalled.

The NY Times - Prosecutors Push Back on Trump’s Request to Delay Documents Trial

13 July 2023

Federal prosecutors on Thursday asked the judge overseeing former President Donald J. Trump’s classified documents case to reject a motion by Mr. Trump’s lawyers to have his trial indefinitely postponed, a move that could serve to delay the proceeding until after the 2024 election.

The filing by the prosecutors came three days after Mr. Trump’s legal team made an unusual request to the judge, Aileen M. Cannon, asking her to set aside the government’s initial suggestion to hold the trial in December and delay it until all “substantive motions” in the case were presented and resolved.
