I'd love to know why so many Kiwis are spending so much time on Trump? & will does it make any difference?
Honest question.

Because he needs to go to prison and be bankrupted. There is nothing good or honest about the man. He has used his wealth as a cudgel against anyone he dislikes, ie people asking him to pay his bills.
If he gets away with it, there are people in all countries who will try to do the same thing, take us away from democracy, rule of law, provable facts and try and install theocracies as a means of having authority being passed down from generation to generation.
We can already see some here in NZ emboldened and are trying to infiltrate education, local bodies, national elections, these people should NEVER be allowed into any form of power.
We already see "Woke" "Deep State" and "Conspiracy" being goto words used more and more to obscure reality and truth and get populist movements to pressure law enforcement etc to stop doing their jobs properly.

I have family who live in the US and the orange buffoon being president impacts them directly (and indirectly), so yes, I do have an interest in what happens with their elections.

Because he's an inspiration - just look at Bolsonaro.
Because he's a danger - just look at his support for dictators.
Because he's a racist and xenophobe. Just look at his policies.
The world need good, not bad.

"...why so many Kiwis are spending so much time on Trump?"
How many Kiwis are you referring to? The few dozen of us on this thread? Or the thousands of decent NZ-ers disgusted with the behavior of this barely-human, lying, cheating criminal would-be dictator who has no concern for anyone else's welfare but his own, and who'll crawl in the sewers to achieve his ends?
If you'd really 'love to know' the answer to your question, read this thread from the beginning and follow all the links. I think you'll find what you're looking for.

Trumpsman?
He has toxically polarised the US, blatantly lied, cheated and done serious damage to the country's political culture. His political style had fascist features in parts: inflammatory rallies, permanent stoking of fears, querulousness, discrimination, shirt-sleeved approval of violence, consistent appropriation of conspiracy theories, performative cruelty, unbridled instinct, marginalisation of minorities and the cult of personality. But he had not pursued bellicose, expansionist interests during his presidency - that is a crucial difference to the fascism of the 20th century.
Fortunately, he was also too lazy, too inexperienced and too ill-prepared to systematically set about establishing a real dictatorship. He was concerned with satisfying his insatiable need for attention and admiration through the appropriate theatrics. Everything had to be as the "greatest thing ever". Until the end of Trump's reign, the protective mechanisms of democracy seemed to be working stably. The US experienced a setback for democracy, but not its collapse.
A second term, however, could give Trump so much tailwind that he moves to attack democracy itself. The Republican Party is currently blatantly exploring how to upend states where it controls all state powers. States that were once pluralistic democracies.
The founding fathers of the USA would turn over in their graves, but he doesn't give a shit.
And … dear Americans, remember this when you imprison him:
Our former GröFaZ (aka: Greatest leader of all times) wrote his ideological book „Mein Kampf“ part I in 1924 while in prison in Landsberg after his failed coup attempt on November 9, 1923. These boys have a lot of time and connections there to cook up the next nonsense when they get out again.

Reuters - Trump urges government shutdown in unlikely bid to 'defund' his criminal prosecutions
Sept 21 (Reuters) - Former President Donald Trump has urged fellow Republicans in Congress to shut down the government to thwart the federal prosecutions against him, although any funding lapse was unlikely to stop the cases from being pursued.
Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives are at odds over how to proceed with spending legislation, which must be passed to avert an Oct. 1 shutdown.
A small group of hardliners, including Trump's most fervent supporters, have complicated the agenda for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy as he pushes a short-term funding plan.
"Republicans in Congress can and must defund all aspects of Crooked Joe Biden’s weaponized Government," Trump wrote on his Truth Social media site late on Wednesday, calling it "the last chance to defund these political prosecutions against me and other Patriots."
A federal shutdown would NOT defund federal prosecutions, or the New York and Georgia prosecutions.
EDIT: The Justice Department has said that criminal investigations have to continue no matter what because they are “an activity essential to the safety of human life and the protection of property.”

Trump once again demonstrates his woeful ignorance of the real world.
