Yet another Donald-as-victim lawsuit ...

The NY Times - ‘Damage and Distress’: Trump Sues Over Russia Dossier in London

10 Oct 2023

Donald Trump has claimed in a lawsuit in a London court that Christopher Steele, a former British intelligence officer, inflicted “personal and reputational damage and distress” on him by leaking a dossier detailing unsavory, unproven accounts of links between him and Russia during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Lawyers for Mr. Trump argue that Mr. Steele’s firm, Orbis Business Intelligence, breached British data protection laws with the dossier, which triggered a political earthquake when it was published just before Mr. Trump’s inauguration in 2017.

The lawsuit, the first filed by Mr. Trump in Britain related to the dossier, could offer the former president more favorable legal terrain than the United States.

Last year, a federal judge in Florida threw out his lawsuit claiming that Mr. Steele, as well as Hillary Clinton and the Democratic National Committee, was involved in a concerted plot to spread false information about Mr. Trump’s ties to Russia.

The NY Times - ‘Damage and Distress’: Trump Sues Over Russia Dossier in London

You'd think Trump would have enough on his plate, and would try to keep additional legal bills to a minimum because he's lost his New York case, an

Even cases like E Jean Carroll are still unresolved.

Five months ago, a jury found Donald Trump liable Tuesday for sexually abusing advice columnist E. Jean Carroll in 1996, awarding her $5 million.

Two months ago, a Judge told Trump that E Jean Carroll allegation he raped her is ‘substantially true’ in court dismissal

A month ago, a federal appeals court denied a bid by Donald Trump to delay a defamation lawsuit by the writer E. Jean Carroll.

But the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit granted Trump an expedited appeal on the question of whether he can claim absolute presidential immunity as a defense.

PBSTrump’s fraudulent financial statements were key to getting loans, former bank official says

Donald Trump obtained hundreds of millions of dollars in loans using financial statements that a court has since deemed fraudulent, a retired bank official testified Wednesday at the former president’s New York civil fraud trial.

Trump’s statements of financial condition were key to his approval for a $125 million loan in 2011 for his Doral, Florida, golf resort and a $107 million loan in 2012 for his Chicago hotel and condo skyscraper, former Deutsche Bank risk management officer Nicholas Haigh testified.

They also helped Trump secure bigger loans and lower interest rates, said Haigh, who headed the risk group for the bank’s private wealth management unit from 2008 to 2018.

A judge last month ruled that Trump and his company, the Trump Organization, committed years of fraud by exaggerating the value of Trump’s assets and net worth on the financial statements he gave to banks, insurers and others to make deals and secure loans.

Trump’s longtime finance chief, Allen Weisselberg, acknowledged in testimony Tuesday that information in the financial statements wasn’t always accurate.

New York Times: Trump Plans Return to N.Y. Court for a Showdown With Michael Cohen

Donald J. Trump plans to return next week to the New York courtroom where his civil fraud trial is slowly proceeding, according to two people with knowledge of the matter, a reappearance that is likely to bring him face-to-face with his former fixer Michael D. Cohen.

Mr. Trump attended the first three days of the trial that stems from a lawsuit brought by the New York attorney general, Letitia James, and used the camera-lined courthouse hallway as an impromptu campaign stop.

He attacked Ms. James and the trial judge, Arthur F. Engoron, who has already ruled that Mr. Trump fraudulently inflated the value of his assets to gain favorable terms on loans and insurance deals. He used his social platform to attack the judge’s law clerk, Allison Greenfield, prompting Justice Engoron to levy a limited gag order barring the former president from attacking members of the court staff.
...
Since the former president left, four witnesses have testified, including two of his fellow defendants: Allen H. Weisselberg, the former chief financial officer of the Trump Organization, and Jeffrey McConney, its former controller.

Mr. Trump’s return, first reported by The Messenger, is likely to coincide with the appearance of the most hotly anticipated witness so far: Mr. Cohen, whose congressional testimony in February 2019 that Mr. Trump inflated the value of his assets was the impetus for Ms. James’s investigation, which began the following month.

“It’s been five years since we have seen one another,” Mr. Cohen said in a response to a request for comment on Mr. Trump’s plans to attend the trial. “I look forward to the reunion. I hope Donald does as well.”

Mr. Trump may also be returning to New York for another reason: He is expected to sit for a deposition next week for a lawsuit brought by two former F.B.I. employees, Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, who say they were persecuted by his Justice Department, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.
...
On the first day of the civil fraud trial, the attorney general’s officeplayed a video of Mr. Cohen saying he had been involved in preparing years’ worth of the annual financial statements on which the former president listed the value of his assets.

In the video, Mr. Cohen said that he and others at the company had inflated the value of individual assets to achieve Mr. Trump’s desired overall net worth. While it played, Mr. Trump shook his head and scowled.

Mr. Cohen is not just testifying against Mr. Trump in the civil fraud case. He is also expected to be the star witness in a criminal case brought by the Manhattan district attorney’s office, which stems from a hush-money payment Mr. Cohen made to a porn star during the 2016 presidential election on Mr. Trump’s behalf.

And yet, videos on YouTube of people taking things out of boxes get tens of thousands of views. 🤷‍♂️ Each to their own, perhaps?

Former Trump Organization Chief Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg was sentenced to five months in jail after pleading guilty to multiple tax crimes related to former President Donald Trump's businesses.

As part of his plea deal, he was required to give truthful testimony.

A few days ago, New York Attorney General Letitia James is reportedly looking at an accusation by Forbes that former Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg may have lied under oath in court this week. His testimony on Thursday was abruptly curtailed.

Forbes: Trump’s Longtime CFO Lied, Under Oath, About Trump Tower Penthouse

In trying to distance himself from Donald Trump’s false financial statements, Allen Weisselberg kept lying.
Allen Weisselberg, the longtime chief financial officer of the Trump Organization, lied in sworn testimony on Tuesday when questioned about Donald Trump’s penthouse atop Trump Tower.

Weisselberg was on the stand as part of a $250 million lawsuit that the New York attorney general is waging against Trump and his associates, including Weisselberg, accusing them of lying about Trump’s net worth to financial institutions. To arrive at inflated figures, the Trump Organization used demonstrably incorrect facts, such as valuing Trump’s penthouse as if it contained 30,000 square feet, when it in fact consisted of 10,996.

Under questioning, Weisselberg acknowledged that the 30,000-square-foot figure was wrong. He tried to suggest, however, that he had little to do with the bogus calculation, batting away a series of questions about the financial documents and discussions with Forbes, which has been valuing Trump’s fortune since 1982. “I never focused on the triplex, to be honest with you,” Weisselberg said. “It was almost de minimis relative to his net worth, so I really didn’t focus on it.”

He repeated similar lines as his testimony continued. “I never focused on the apartment Mr. Trump owned,” he said at one point. At another: “I didn’t correlate the square footage of Donald’s apartment. I never focused on it. It was always in my mind a de minimis asset of the overall of Donald J. Trump’s statement of financial condition. That was never a concern of mine. I never even thought about the apartment. It was de minimis in my mind.”

But that’s not true. A review of old emails and notes, some of which the attorney general’s office does not possess, show that Weisselberg absolutely thought about Trump’s apartment—and played a key role in trying to convince Forbes over the course of several years that it was worth more than it really was. Given the fact that these discussions continued for years, and that Weisselberg took a very detailed approach in reviewing Trump’s assets with Forbes, it defies all logic to think he truly believes what he is now saying in court.

AP News: Colorado judge strikes down Trump’s attempt to toss a lawsuit seeking to bar him from the ballot

A Colorado judge has rejected an attempt by former President Donald Trump to dismiss a lawsuit that seeks to keep him off the state ballot, ruling that his objections on free-speech grounds did not apply.

[Insert Trump's lawyers verbal diarrhoea here]

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington claims in its lawsuit that putting Trump on the ballot in Colorado would violate a provision of the 14th Amendment that bars people who have “engaged in insurrection” against the Constitution from holding office.

DeSANTIS TO SHAKE UP CAMPAIGN BY REPLACING HIMSELF WITH AN APPEALING PERSON

TALLAHASSEE (The Borowitz Report)—In a campaign shakeup that he is calling a “game-changer,” Ron DeSantis will replace himself with an appealing human being.

“In Iowa and New Hampshire, I’ve listened as voters have told me loud and clear what they want in a candidate,” he said. “And what they want is not me.”

“Let me say to all of the Republican primary voters out there: 'Message Received',” he declared.

In the effort to replace the Florida governor, his campaign has begun compiling a list of people who are more likable than DeSantis, a roster that reportedly runs into the hundreds of thousands.

DeSantis’s campaign spokesman, Harland Dorrinson, said that the candidate’s decision to replace himself with a non-odious substitute “shows that he’s willing to make the gutsy calls a leader has to make,” and added that the future of the governor’s white go-go boots will also be determined.
