The problem with being truly ignorant is you are too ignorant to comprehend how ignorant you are. The good thing is Trump has no shame in displaying his ignorance to the world because he doesn't understand how ridiculous he appears. The bad thing is equally ignorant people like the fact that he is as dumb as they are and they support him for that reason.

This article reminds me of the "the invisible hand" argument.

It is a metaphor inspired by the Scottish moral philosopher Adam Smith that describes the incentives which free markets often create for self-interested people to act in the public interest.

British economist John Maynard Keynes (1883–1946), is regarded as the founder of modern macroeconomics.

In contrast to Adam Smith, He said

“Capitalism is the astounding belief that the most wickedest of men will do the most wickedest of things for the greatest good of everyone.”

So yeah, call me doubtful that Trump will do anything that helps democracy, whenhe's unapologetically wants to be the first American dictator / political strongman.

If anything it proves more checks-and-balances are needed, in particular around the electoral college, and the House of Representatives. (Iowa power versus California power)

I also consider trying to overthrow the government a bad thing.

This line of argument also sets up a dangerous, if potentially hilarious precedent. Because what’s true for Trump could also be true for Biden…

Re Trump's lawyer's ridiculous "immunity" argument. This story raises a point I hadn't thought of before, even though I know Biden would never do this as he has morals, ethics, standards, decency, etc.

At least not all of the Republican party are on Trump's side. No one involved in invading the Capitol on January 6 was a "hostage" in any way, shape or form. They were suckered in by a conman who convinced him he had been stolen of something that wasn't rightfully his (an election). They believed his lies and went there of their own free will to do Trump's dirty work for him. They are most definitely not "hostages" - as quite a few senators say in this story here - and I fully agree. "Thugs" is a much better word, IMO.

I haven't seen a Trump press conference for a while so had forgotten that they take place in a parallel universe.

His press conference after his court appearance today reminded me. He stands in front of the camera and maintains he's innocent of fraud even though he has already been found guilty and the current hearings are just about the level of penalty. Everything he said was the opposite of reality.

The other thing that hits you is the complete lack of any cohesive arguments from him supporting his assertions. It's just a stream of unrelated sentences. You half expect him at any time to spout something like

'I'm completely innocent of these charges' followed by

'Can someone get me a sandwich' followed by

'Crooked Joe is responsible for the migrant crisis' followed by

'I need to pee'

If I was one of the reporters present I'd find it difficult not to burst out laughing.

Donald J. Trump on Thursday delivered abrupt remarks in his own defense on the final day of his civil fraud trial in Manhattan, attacking the New York attorney general, who brought the case, insulting the judge to his face and declaring himself “an innocent man.”

Mr. Trump’s remarks were chaotic and emotional and lasted only minutes, during which he impugned the attorney general, Letitia James, a Democrat, saying she “hates Trump and uses Trump to get elected.”

He also took aim at the judge, Arthur F. Engoron, remarking, “You have your own agenda, I certainly understand that.” He added, as the judge stared stonily at him, “You can’t listen for more than one minute.”

Justice Engoron instructed the former president’s lawyer to “control your client.” But Mr. Trump continued until the lunch break, at which point he stopped as suddenly as he had started.

This is going to cost him ... 🙄

EDIT: Earlier that day, Nassau County authorities responded to a bomb threat at Justice Engoron’s home.

EDIT: Engoron says he will do his best to issue a final decision in the case by Jan. 31.

The male lawyer (Chris something?) sitting next to Trump has a pretty big grin on his face for some reason. IMO the female lawyer on the other side looks like she came direct from Sak's instead of to a court case, but maybe that's just me.

The Independent: Trump refuses to commit to Nato in second term at Fox News town hall

Donald Trump on Thursday refused to commit to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Nato) if elected for a second term and accused European countries of exploiting the US on trade and strategic affairs.

“Would you be committed to Nato in second Trump term,” asked Fox News host Bret Baier during the town hall with the former Republican president.

His comments on Nato come a day after a high-level EU official claimed that Mr Trump, during his presidency, said that the US would never help Europe if it came under attack.

According to Thierry Breton, a French commissioner responsible for the European Union’s internal market, Mr Trump made the remarks to European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2020.

"By the way, Nato is dead, and we will leave, we will quit Nato," Mr Trump also said, according to Mr Breton, speaking at an event hosted by the Renew Europe political party at the European Parliament.

"And by the way, you owe me $400bn, because you didn’t pay, you Germans, what you had to pay for defense," he quoted Mr Trump as saying.

During his first term from 2017 to 2021, Mr Trump repeatedly clashed with traditional allies over trade and defence spending, while complaining that Nato owed the US back payments and that member countries were not upholding the financial end of their alliance responsibilities. Those claims are mostly inaccurate.

Nato is not a club in which members pay monthly dues or lose their benefits.

Malaria drug Trump touted as Covid cure increased chance of death.

There was an 11% increase in mortality associated with cases involving the use of hydroxychloroquine

So at least 16,990 died in in hospital in the US, Belgium, France, Italy, Spain and Turkey. Of course there were many more who died outside a hospital.

Trump announced that the FDA would fast-track approval of unproven coronavirus treatments, including hydroxychloroquine, which he said has “been around for a long time so we know if things don't go as planned it's not going to kill anybody.”

Despite NIH Director Dr. Anthony Fauci saying “the answer is no” when asked if the drug is an effective coronavirus treatment, Trump said “we ought to give it a try,” adding, “I feel good about it. That’s all it is, just a feeling, you know.”

Citing a paper that was later ripped apart by experts, Trump tweeted “HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE & AZITHROMYCIN, taken together, have a real chance to be one of the biggest game changers in the history of medicine,” and said that the drugs should be “put in use IMMEDIATELY. PEOPLE ARE DYING, MOVE FAST, and GOD BLESS EVERYONE!”

At Trump’s urging, the FDA approved emergency use of hydroxychloroquine despite little evidence that it was effective in treating coronavirus.

Pointing to a trial of hydroxychloroquine on patients in New York, which ended up finding the drug to be useless in treating the virus, Trump said the country would have a “good idea” if the drug was effective in “the next three days.”

"Hydroxychloroquine, I don't know," Trump said. "It's looking like it's having some good results. I hope. That would be a phenomenal thing."

Trump said, “I’m not acting as a doctor, but there are some good signs,” and declared “We don’t have time to take a couple years and test it out, we have people dying today as we speak,” asserting “it doesn’t kill people.”

Reporting revealed that Trump had small and distant financial links to Sanofi, a company that manufactures hydroxychloroquine, and that dark money groups were pushing Trump to back the drug.

While meeting with recovered coronavirus patients, some of whom had taken hydroxychloroquine, Trump praised the drug as “an unbelievable malaria pill. Unbelievable lupus pill,” and asserted if a different president was promoting the drug, “people would say, 'Gee, isn’t that smart?'"

Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority Director Rick Bright alleged he was demoted due to his resistance to Trump’s promotion of the unproven drug.

After a period of silence following studies showing the drug is ineffective and an FDA warning against wide use of the drug, Trump announced he had been taking hydroxychloroquine for “about a week and a half” with “zero symptoms,” reiterating “what do you have to lose?” and slamming an VA report that said the drug is ineffective as “very unscientific.”

Trump defended his promotion of the drug, saying he “worked with doctors,” referring to the VA study as a “Trump enemy statement” and a “false study” and incorrectly denying the existence of an FDA warning against use of the drug to treat coronavirus.

Trump said he would be finishing his hydroxychloroquine regimen in “a day or two."

Hydroxychloroquine was prescribed in hospitalised patients with Covid-19 despite of the low-level evidence.

Subsequently, HCQ use was associated with an 11% increase in the mortality rate in a meta-analysis of randomized trials.

The number of hydroxychloroquine related deaths in hospitalised patients is estimated at 16,990 in six countries.

These findings illustrate the hazard of drug repurposing with low-level evidence for the management of future pandemics.
