Winston Peters would be a good leader.  Sure , he has flaws but who doesn't.

For people to suggest he is in the pocket of big corporates ignore his history of fighting big corporates.

Winston fights (in public) for what ever will give him votes.  Don't worry, I think he knows which side his bread is buttered.

Remember the "Wine Box" enquiry, he alluded he had damaging info and kept drip feeding little morsels BUT never actually came out with anything of real substance. Either he didn't know what he inferred he did, in other words lied, or he was encouraged to keep quiet.

Like many opposition MPs he can spruik what ever policy he likes, safe in the knowledge he'll most likely never ever be caught out not delivering, because, (A) he'll never be in a position to be able to enact it or (B) it will be long forgotten when that chance comes his way.

I do like some of his policies, however he needs to be on a very short leash. I don't trust him to be a stable coalition partner.

Yes he could be.. He does call a spade a spade, but the problem is he's only in it for the fame.

If the Greens were smart they'd go with National - the problem is they're not smart enough to do that. They'd be able to actually be part of the Government, and push many of the things they want through as concessions for their support. They'd achieve far more than they ever would being in bed with Labour.

Personally I would rather have Winston in government than greens in government. I would much rather see a labout/NZ first government than National/Greens. And thats from a National supporter. Winston would keep labour to the right. The greens would pull National too far to the left. Besides I feel National has done very little to address the immigration issues we have.

I am expecting a repeat of 1996 - Winston will ponder his options for a few weeks and then agree to support a National government.

It would be too undignified for him to go with the other option considering his distaste for the Greens and the fact that he is out-rating Andrew Little as preferred prime minister.

Labour are actually at risk of not even getting their leader voted back in due to him only being a list MP. Once the campaigning starts properly I can only see the smaller parties gaining more votes off the larger ones because of the major problems the country faces with house prices and immigration. Labour want to get rid of the tax cuts and bring in new other taxes which are never going to be popular for people who are on the fence as to whether they want to continue to support national.

Labour aren't string enough to govern with the support of just nz first so I can't see it being a repeat. I can't see nz first wanting to work with the greens at all

IMHO Labour have only had one recent leader who has suitable to be PM - that was David Shearer. Even as a right wing voter I'd have been incredibly happy with him as PM.

Unfortunately the party didn't want him.. And that says a lot about the party and it's supports really.

They selected the wrong leader as they so often do. Grant Robertson would have been a better choice.

He was correct with the Wine Box, however the Government wanted nothing to do with it for obvious reasons. He didn't lie he just did not have the vehicle at that time do anything about it given the political set up at the time.

When Winston was foreign affairs Minister he actually did a good job and was one of the better Cabinet Ministers at the time.

A Green coalition would be ok if they dialled down their welfare and tax policies. An increase in benefit levels is needed to help address poverty but 20% increase is unsustainable.

I'm starting to like this man more and more. A little like a mini Trump, or a Trump wannabe maybe, He seems to be saying the right things. I guess the question is can we believe him? I would love to see the undemocratic Maori seats abolished completely. I'm sure he is going to win votes thats for sure.

Winston Peters delivers bottom-line binding referendum on abolishing Maori seats

He also hinted at not building any more prisons and making prisoners do hard labour six days a week but when pressed on whether it was policy he said it was still a work in progress.

Nope, it would be a disaster. I will be voting in this election strategically, to keep the Greens out of government.

They are really 'ambulance at the bottom of the cliff' policies. The policies don't address the underlying problems with high housing costs. They are treating the symptoms and not the cause. If housing was a lot cheaper, and we had more competition in the building materials market, and less compliance costs etc, then we wouldn't have the need to increase benefits significantly. The thing is that nanny state policies only increase compliance and building costs. We are heading down the track of the UK, with a two class housing system, where people needing council flats, aren't able to rent privately, let alone buy.

The other big problem in NZ is food prices, again due to a lack of competition. The regular everyday price for basics in NZ is in many cases double what they are in the UK and Oz. But NZ supermarkets seem to do that sale price rotation thing, and have loyalty systems where you give them information on your buying habits in exchange for better deals. So it is possible to buy stuff cheaper but you have to plan and stagger your purchases.

I would vote against that measure. It would create unwarranted problems and solve nothing.

I think people could relate better to Shearer, as he seemed really laid back. The replacement is like an unflavored instant pudding.

The Green Party has been in coalition before and NZ survived. A government required to have better green policies is a good thing.

Snap.

I could live with Labour. But it's a package deal - if I get Labour then I also get the Greens. Which, given their lard-left socialist economic leanings and penchant for big government nanny statism I doubt I cold stomach. (Plus, I don't really like lentils or mung beans).

Plus, a Labour-Green government looks impossible at this point, it would pretty much have to be Labour-Green-NZ First. Which isn't exactly a recipe for stable government or considered policy making.
