Ideally, she should have said, "We will refer the matter to the Police, and cooperate in any way that we can."

Having Ministers "investigate" anything that may become a Police matter is skating on particularly thin ice... (ask Maurice Williamson)

I think most people know I am not a fan of our PM. However, I think being blindsided on an issue as serious as this would be seriously unpleasant. She probably hasn't had a lot of experience in that regard and so I can't really blame her too much for her reaction.

I think she will look back on that and wish she said different things, but I feel it would be unfair to be too harsh at her reaction under the circumstances.

What she has said and done since; THAT is a serious problem and speaks volumes about her lack of leadership credentials. I'll reiterate that I think she would have been better as an oppposition leader for 1 term before taking over as PM. It would have given her time to polish her delivery and gain some actual experience as a leader and show she was up for the job. So far, thrown in the deep end, she has a pleasant enough demeanour if you are into that, but when she is under pressure, she isn't coping well.

The real issue (IMO) is that the parents weren't told. How is this not an issue that a parent wouldn't be the first to be told? What kind of expertise does an expert have that thinks a parent doesn't need to know about an issue like this? I mean, who else is more qualified to give support to a young person than a parent?

Agreed.

On top of the two mentioned, whoever supplied alcohol to underage kids, should also be suspended immediately, followed by an investigation and that person if found to have done that, should be sacked.

I am deeply suspicious here that it has been a cover up from the onset. The Police will investigate now I am sure. All they need is any complaint.

After the #metoo campaign I am disgusted that a political party wants to keep blatant sexual abuse hidden.

Agreed Kirton will go. Massive fail on JA's leadership she didn't suspend him immediately. He has the right to an investigation, but should have resigned.

Woods should go and won't, agreed. She should DEFINITELY go.

From being "deeply suspicious" that there's been a cover up - in the next breath you're acting as if the trial's over and you're baying for blood.

The police also do not need a "complaint" to deal with the matter and launch a prosecution - if they see that as being appropriate action.

Can the PM get rid of Kirton? Or are te political and administrative arms of the Labour Party nominally separate?

Could be a decision for Labour's president or NZ Council.

"Sending an Email" is surely not an appropriate response to victims of sexual assault? Failing to engage beyond that certainly doesn't seem to align with earlier statements that the investigation was "victim-led".

Like....an adult sexual predator was abusing children in the Governments care and he wasn't reported to Police??? He was offered counselling for abusers??

It is in the interests of the children and the public that this guy be reported to the Police and there can be NO excuses. The Police can then decide in consultation with other parties the best approach in what is a delicate situation.

The Minister who knew about this for days must fall. There is no other option. As for the PM to make a full inquiry is simply not an option.

So sad that this incident would be covered up. Do people not understand that the truth always comes out in the end??

Given how often they have/will in the future go on about how bad abuse is etc etc JA must be monumentally foolish not to have taken a guillotine to all and sundry involved in this immediately.

Their credibility on such issues just flew right out of the window.
