Cult leaders will be cult leaders. If you don't know how they make money by asking the faithful for donations, then you have been under a rock. You won't see him asking for money on that clip.

The stupidity of the US conservative, hard right is a great illustration why it's imperative that people start treating voluntary stupidity and refusal to partake in a basic level of education as the kind of true moral crisis that they really are. Gay marriage, abortion, or whatever the hell else these imbeciles think is the moral crises of our time are nothing of that sort. Their stupidity and influence is the crisis of our time.

Billy Graham Sr deceased famous USA evangelical conservative said creationists were just nutty to deny scientific findings. I recently read an article by a less famous but also influential USA evangelical again older generation who said that much of the evangelical movement in the USA had become a simple minded identity us and them movement, ie: religion not needed and neglected.

This kind of thing emphasises how different things in the USA are, compared to NZ and how everything is BIGGGER in the USA. It's just mind boggling. My son's been watching a bunker-building prepper series on NF - people spend 10s of 1000s preparing for the rapture. Yeah, right.......

Don't forget though, the US was partially founded as a religious utopia and all the propaganda about the pilgrims has been reinforced over the centuries and percolates US culture.

Of course there are lots of people who can think for themselves but even in NZ you find true believers, I work with a couple. Intelligent, reasonable people who have something inside them that makes them religious. Perhaps its a genetic thing.

Public figures like this will prey on those with the belief. They're free to ask for money and the donors are free to give it. We like freedom, don't we ? Is the money given freely though?

I make a distinction between faith and craziness. I have known many very fine people with strong religious beliefs. I don't agree with them but I respect them and don't have a problem with them. The nutters are another matter. Religious fanaticism is just another form of craziness. I don't know if it has made it into the DSM yet, but it should have.

There will always be predators. These are simply people without principles out to make an easy dollar. I am a lot more bothered by the crazies who follow them. True fanaticism is scary stuff.

Another disaster for secular democracy probably about to happen.

Looks like Brazil will elect Jair Bolsonaro president.

His views on the secular state:

"God above everything. There is no such thing as this secular state. The state is Christian and the minority will have to change, if they can."

On homosexuality:

"If I see two men kissing in the street, I will beat them." He then publicly defended beating gay children by saying: "If your child starts to become like that, a little gay, you take a whip and you change their behavior."

On military dictatorship in Brazil:

On women:

A congresswoman was "not worth raping; she is very ugly"

that the first four (of his children) were male and that for the fifth he produced a daughter out of "a moment of weakness"

I voted yesterday, at the Embassy. One candidate is a right-wing guy who says he's all for conservatism, family-values, religious imposition. The other is a left-wing candidate who visits the ex-President in prison (for corruption) to get directions.

I voted blank. My preferred candidate came third in the first round.

What a shame.
