Trump in office after his 2020 election defeat, nearly two months after the group’s leader - Stewart Rhodes - was convicted of the same offense in a separate trial in November. ...

The jury returned the decision after about 15 hours of deliberation over three days, and it came as a parallel sedition trial for members of the Proud Boys - another far-right group that joined the mob outside the Capitol on Jan. 6 - continued to play out in the same courthouse.

Unlike other U.S. representatives, Santos can not look forward to a lucrative no-talent needed job, such as an industry shill.

California attorney regulators said on Thursday they will seek to disbar attorney John Eastman over his involvement in former US president Donald Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election.

The state bar of California charged Eastman, a former personal lawyer to Trump, with 11 counts of ethics violations, including misleading courts and making false public statements about voter fraud in the 2020 election.

Eastman participated in a strategy “unsupported by facts or law” to obstruct the count of presidential electors in Congress following Democrat Joe Biden’s election victory, the bar’s complaint said.

The Washington Post - The historic support for George Santos’s resignation

In resisting calls to push out embattled Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.), House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has insisted that it’s up to the voters.

Well, the voters have spoken, and they clearly want him out. In fact, they have expressed that preference by a rather historic margin.

A Newsday/Siena College poll finds that 78 percent of voters in Santos’s congressional district want him to resign.

The numbers from the new poll, specific to the 3rd Congressional District, are roundly brutal for Santos:

In addition to the 78 percent calling for him to resign, just 13 percent affirmatively say he shouldn’t resign.

Members of Santos’s own Republican Party are about as likely to call for his resignation, doing so by 71-18 percent.

Just 16 percent of all voters say Santos can be an effective member of Congress.

Voters say 71-17 percent that McCarthy was wrong to seat Santos on committees. (The morning the poll was released, Santos said he would step down from those committees.*)

Republicans say 74-15 percent that Santos doesn’t reflect the values of the Republican Party.

He trails by 21 points in a rematch with his 2022 Democratic opponent, Robert Zimmerman.

It’s worth emphasizing just how rare it is to see this level of consensus that a politician should resign. ...

There are real benefits to being a recognised candidate for president, even if you have no hope of winning. It is a ploy successfully used by many to advance their prospects.
