Get off your high horse.  I'm not suggesting a "fob off" investigation, but that if there's any investigation and no police witness to corroborate (almost certain), then the investigation won't be a very long one.

If you think it's worth grilling other police officers who might have been near enough to hear something until they 'fess up, I disagree.  I have no expectation that they would - even if the allegations were true and they witnessed it.

I'm done with this aspect of discussion.  In the overall context of what happened yesterday and the topic of the thread, you're grandstanding over something incredibly trivial.

Police officers are public servants, sworn to uphold the rule of law and to actually tell the truth. If there are any police witnesses who would choose in their heart of hearts to lie/deny what they heard, then there's a serious question to be asked about their integrity. But why impugn people like that? All that I am calling for is a serious and bona fide investigation. You want to talk about what's important after an event like this? What's important is holding on to the kinds of values that protect the rule of law and due process. Not a whole lot of platitudes or abusing people who care about due process.

tdgeek: Latest news is that Tarrant did both shootings.

Don't think there was too much doubt by late last night that this was the case, given that he's the only person charged with murder so far. Now I have no idea whether any of the other arrestees will be charged but depending on what anyone knew and/or the extent to which they provided assistance to Tarrant, it is entirely plausible that they are potentially guilty of partaking in a conspiracy to commit murder and an act of terrorism. That will be the next interesting judicial process development but I'd imagine this will take a long time to settle.

If convicted of the most serious charges, Tarrant and any arrestees will very likely become the first to be sentenced to life without the possibility of parole based on a recent Court of Appeal authority on sentencing for offences at the upper end/worst end of their class, especially if the Supreme Court declines to hear an appeal on that case.

Thanks
Yes, not being a lawyer I assumed they may have linked him to one deceased based on the video , so we’re allowed to charge him for one murder, but not the other two people at this time.

JohnFlower: Is there a list of ISP's that didn't block certain websites? Just curious.

AFAIK, only the big three (Spark, Vodafone, Vocus) are blocking the material. I certainly didn't have any issues viewing the video and manifesto late last night with 2 degrees.

Maybe some good will come of this ...

New Zealand Police Association fully supports PM’s call for gun law changes

NZPA | Sat March 16th, 2019

Police Association President Chris Cahill has welcomed the Prime Minister’s early commitment to changing New Zealand’s gun laws.

“Jacinda Ardern has said emphatically that New Zealand’s gun laws will change and that now is the time for that change.

I absolutely agree with her and I believe many New Zealanders will be aghast that in our country someone can amass a cache of weapons like that discovered in this Christchurch tragedy,” Mr Cahill said.

“It is sickening that it has taken this horrific event to wake us up to our vulnerability". ...

“New Zealanders and our politicians now need to step in behind Prime Minister Ardern as she takes decisive action on access to lethal weapons.

I can pledge that the association will do everything it can to assist her in cleaning up our gun laws.

There's this crazy obsession amongst even defence lawyers over how many counts of a charge someone is up for, as though this makes any material difference. In law, it absolutely doesn't. I obviously haven't seen the police summary of facts but am guessing that they would have prepared a preliminary one in haste (and that's no criticism -- they are perfectly entitled to update it as things go along). If after due process Mr Loser is convicted, one would expect that ultimately he will be seen as having caused the deaths of 49 people (and pragmatically speaking, I would expect the death toll to rise). Whether that's expressed as 49 counts of murder (unlikely) or 1 count of murder for causing 49 deaths, it makes no difference in sentencing. The sentencing judge sentences on the basis of the culpability of the individual, taking into account whether there are inherent mitigating/aggravating circumstances to do with the offending, and then mitigating/aggravating factors tied to the individual offender.

My own view is that, if convicted, this mob should be held in solitary confinement and made to stare at a prison wall full of wholesome and good things that set off the hard right for 23 hours a day. It's the least bit of revenge that society deserves.

I have a few words for the simpletons who want to waste people's time at this juncture with their little crusades against censorship. Here's a reminder on the law: if you choose to seek out and download videos of the actual massacre circulating around the internet (other than those carefully cut and very limited ones available on legitimate news sites designed to support legitimate news reporting), you're almost contravening the provisions against possessing objectionable materials under the Films, Videos and Publications Classification Act 1993. Apart from the law, you're also a sick and disgusting individual who should, at a minimum, consider seeking out some professional help or doing the world a favour and move to some uninhabited island.

If your little crusade extends merely to some posturing over certain sites being inaccessible and you have no intention to access illegal material -- if you care that much about supposed censorship, go and bloody use a trial or free VPN service and fill your boots. Leave people who are busy with trying to uphold the law and denying media oxygen to sickos the time to do their jobs.

I went with my wife this morning to lay flowers at the Hagley scene, Every nationality and age were there and it was very very emotional. I have no words that can describe what happened and I feel a deep sorrow for the family and friends of those effected.

Since the US being awash with guns has helped to reduce the death toll.

I think all gun owners need to accept there are problems within their community and they haven't done enough to prevent crazies. My understanding was he was a member of the South Otago Gun Club.

So because of the crazy it probably means you can't get to keep your AR15's. Boo hoo.
