sir1963:

are childless, they do not get a tax break, yet they pay for someone else's child to be education, get medical care etc etc etc.

Meantime the kids also get free dental, children's prices for things, etc, ie the benefits of being a child. At what age to they become "adults" ?, why not a year younger ?

Kids are NOT being targeted

Childless here too, and I am happy to give back to New Zealand's kids, both current and future.
I am stoked if my money is going towards someones kids education, medical, dental, etc (whatever that kid needs to be a successful person, that wants to be a kiwi).
I don't give a flying toss if their parents can/could afford it or not.

Those kids and their future is a social investment. I would be proud of having any of my tax dollars going to them, instead of another road.
I don't intend to have any kids myself...... but if i do have kids or step kids that come into my life then, then I guess my tax money will be helping them too and that is just a bonus.

Kids are totally being targeted as Luxon's political talking point here.

I remember back in my day and I am sure every GZ member can remember back to their youth when they were told they are the problem.
It's always easy to dumpster on kids/youths as a problem (Rock N Rock, Comic Books, PokeMon, Anime, Video Games all the stuff blamed for promblems of the day).

People do it because it is easy and kids/youths can't defend themselves, it is shameful.
I remember my generation being called slack and worthless and causing problems, for what? a skirt too high? some facial hair, an earring, footware?

My point remains there is no good reason why banning phones in schools needs to be a law,
and saying that without banning phones as a law, Teachers who are in public schools would be doing a "garbage job" is straigh up disgraceful.

Sorry GZ members for the tone of this message but I felt heated to call out a straw man argument, my apologies if I went too far.

My arguement is not that phones should be in school(s), my argument is it shouldn't be a law. It should be left up to the school and their community, not 3 old farts.

We are not going to see eye to eye on this point, so this will be my last reply on this matter to you.

Law makes it easy for schools, they no longer need to justify it to any parent. This is the same reason we had covid mandates, employers no did not have to argue with employees about it.

I am all for 3 meals a day for kids at school

I am all for smaller class sizes, hell have a class size of 5 for this with high needs, or those really bright kids that need to be intellectually challenged

I am all for a fund to ensure all kids get to go on school camps

I am all for schools being able to offer Uniforms to kids whose families can not afford it

I am all for them being taught LGBTQ rights, Maori language

I am all for religion being kept out of schools

And yes, schools do fail at teaching. They do not have qualified Maths, Science,Engineering teachers and even PE teachers are becoming scarce. Those kids ARE being robbed of an education, I have worked with secondary school teachers who quit because they got sick and tired of arguing with parents and that it was their child who was the problem.

Please go teaching and see how long your myopic view lasts.

Of course private schools you pay for and the new shiny charter schools will be so much better.

'One Year 9 girl got a tattoo': Parents fume at prestigious school
https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/education/133357705/one-year-9-girl-got-a-tattoo-parents-fume-at-prestigious-school

""
Epsom Girls’ Grammar has until now refused to hand over an independent review of the hostel, which parents campaigned for after increasing dissatisfaction with communication, pastoral care, dilapidated facilities and what several called “chaotic” discipline problems, including vaping, drug-taking and theft.

Parents claimed one Year 9 girl got a tattoo while under hostel supervision.

It's a problem when freedumbs percolate down to children that don't process potential consequences down the track.
Some of us take a long time to get that toxic peer pressure is not because these people are going to be friends that will stand by you.

Kinda sobering: https://www.stuff.co.nz/opinion/301019123/sir-ian-taylor-the-unintended-consequences-of-the-new-government

Sobering?

No, that's the definition of "'I never thought leopards would eat MY face,' sobs woman who voted for the Leopards Eating People's Faces Party."

Like people voting for Brexit then complaining they got Brexit.

https://archive.ph/1vbxF Heather thingo is right here - Luxon is being upstaged by Winston. How long it carries on for is another question.

For everyone's sake, I hope the fun is sustained. The longer it goes on without Luxon pulling Winston up and making him fall into line the worse it will get. If he lets it go too long it will be obvious he's not in charge of Winston and that's where the wheels will fall off because either Luxon tacitly admits it and lets Winston start running the show, or he tries for the showdown, and it's no-confidence time. For a supposed big-shot leader of men he's really not demonstrating much of it.

Peters won't risk bringing down the Government and losing power.

Not directly but he might decide go sit on the cross-benches if he gets annoyed enough.

His ego overdoses on sitting at the top table. If he's on the cross benches I imagine he wouldn't be able to do that.

Probably cause another election as ACT/NAT dont have a mandate? But the PM was a CEO, involved in acquisitions and mergers, so whats up there? THis is a merger. He should be all over it but he has has fallen short. His pro smoking policy is because there will be one ciggie outlet in Northland. No, 18 actually. So instead of owning it, he spent 18 nanoseconds admitting he got it wrong, then the rest saying it makes no difference.

This is about being the boss not running New Zealand. I will wait with interest how banning gang patches will go, as well as banning gang members from contacting each other. But as he had mentioned when asked, thats up to the Police. Again, not owning it
