Reason: Trump, Who Wants To Execute Drug Dealers, Promises To Free Ross Ulbricht

"We're going to be asking everyone who sells drugs, gets caught selling drugs," former President Donald Trump said in November 2022 as he launched his 2024 presidential campaign, "to receive the death penalty for their heinous acts."

That promise was not an offhand remark; it has been core to Trump's platform. Which made one of his comments yesterday at the Libertarian National Convention all the more interesting. "I will commute the sentence of Ross Ulbricht," he said, referring to the man serving two life sentences plus 40 years for a slew of convictions, including distributing narcotics. Ulbricht's legal troubles stem an online marketplace he founded and operated called the Silk Road, where users could buy and sell illegal substances.

Ulbricht has long been of interest to libertarians, many of whom have been dogged about their belief that his sentence was perversely disproportionate to his actual conduct. Taking Trump's words at face value, it would appear the former president agrees, at the very least, that the nearly 11 years Ulbricht has served are sufficient punishment. That is hard to square with his supposed view that people who sell drugs should be put to death.

The Libertarian first round nomination is over. Before I tell you the results, from Trump beforehand:

""The reason I didn't file paperwork for the Libertarian Nomination, which I would have absolutely gotten if I wanted it (as everyone could tell by the enthusiasm of the Crowd last night!), was the fact that, as the Republican Nominee, I am not allowed to have the Nomination of another Party. Regardless, I believe I will get a Majority of the Libertarian Votes"

He placed 11th, with six write-in votes. In 10th place was a man named "Toad" with almost three times the votes.

From Fox News: "Toad Anderson, as he is listed on the ballot, prefers to just be called Toad. His real name is Josh Anderson. Very little information is available about Anderson’s campaign or positions on political issues.."

Once again, Trump's view of reality and actual reality don't align 🙄

Speaking of which - check out the "massive" crowd here! 😄

Also, maybe Trump will have to take a page out of his well-heeled friend Rudy's book and learn to shut his mouth... https://www.rawstory.com/jack-smith-smart-move-trump-cannon-bias/

Jack Smith and Florida Trump-appointed judge Cannon: I'm reminded of this quote “Never attempt to teach a pig to sing; it wastes your time and annoys the pig.”

While there are professional repercussions for Judge Cannon when she's proven biased, such censure, suspension, or removal from the bench, this is Florida we're talking about.

Memorial Day is a holiday in the US. It honors and mourns the U.S. military personnel who died. On this day, people visit cemeteries and memorials to mourn the military personnel who died in the line of duty.

It's also consider the unofficial first day of summer in the US.

The Guardian: Biden honors troops on Memorial Day as Trump lashes out at his ‘human scum’ enemies
...
Previous comments attributed to Trump about fallen members of the military, whom he is said to have derided as “losers” and “suckers” for allowing themselves to be killed in battle.

If so, the glaring disparity was further emphasised by Trump’s Memorial Day outburst, which reprised previous holiday volleys of abuse aimed at his enemies and opponents.

“Happy Memorial Day to All, including the Human Scum that is working so hard to destroy our Once Great Country, & to the Radical Left, Trump Hating Federal Judge in New York that presided over, get this, TWO separate trials, that awarded a woman, who I never met before (a quick handshake at a celebrity event, 25 years ago, doesn’t count!), 91 MILLION DOLLARS for ‘DEFAMATION,’” he wrote.

That comment was aimed at Lewis Kaplan, the judge in a civil trial brought by the writer E Jean Carroll, who alleged that Trump raped and then defamed her.

She didn’t know when the so-called event took place – sometime in the 1990s – never filed a police report, didn’t have to produce the dress that she threatened me with (it proved negative)…” Trump continued in reference to Carroll.

He then turned his attention to Judge Arthur Engoron, who ruled in a civil lawsuit last year that the former president and presumptive 2024 Republican nominee had committed fraud by overvaluing his assets – and to Judge Juan Merchan, who is in charge of Trump’s current hush money trial in which he is accused of falsifying documents to cover up an affair with a porn actor.

He referred to Engoron as “the [New York] state wacko judge who fined me 500 Million Dollars (UNDER APPEAL) for DOING NOTHING WRONG” before adding: “Now for Merchan!”

Prosecutors and lawyers are scheduled to present their closing arguments on Tuesday in the trial, which has been running for four weeks and in which Trump faces 34 counts of paying money to an adult film star before the 2016 presidential election, which he won over Hillary Clinton.

Newsweek - Donald Trump Mocked Over Trial 'Meltdown'

28 May

Donald Trump has been mocked over his questionable social media comments ahead of a crucial week in his hush money case, and one commentator said he was having a panicky "meltdown."

In his Truth Social posts, before closing arguments and jury deliberations in the falsifying business records trial, the former president asked why potential key witnesses in the case were not allowed to testify, and why one of the defense witnesses was "horribly treated" by Judge Juan Merchan ...

Bad timing, Donald  😒

What's the difference between Trump and a drowning man pushing rescuers down?

Trump will yell "loser" and "sucker" when he grasps a breath.

The Daily Beast - Trump Just Sold His $10M Jet to One of His Megadonors

27 May 2024

After nearly half a billion dollars in legal judgments against him this year, Donald Trump’s company opted to offload one of his private jets this month, public filings show.

And the buyer is a Republican megadonor who poured nearly $250,000 into a political committee tied to Trump’s 2020 campaign.

The plane, a 1997 Cessna jet, is worth in the range of $10 million, according to evoJets, though terms of the transaction couldn’t be confirmed.

Trump has averaged more than $90,000 a day in legal-related costs for more than three years - none of it paid for with his own money.

Until now ...

Newsweek: Judge Merchan Slams Trump Lawyer's 'Outrageous' Comment

Judge Juan Merchan chastised Donald Trump's attorney, Todd Blanche, during closing arguments Tuesday in the ex-president's hush money criminal trial.

Blanche, according to sources in the courtroom, told the jury that Trump could be imprisoned if they convicted him.

"That was outrageous, Mr. Blanche," Merchan said. "Someone who's been a prosecutor as long as you have, someone who's been an attorney as long as you have knows that it's highly inappropriate."

The judge then said that he would provide curative instruction to the jury when they returned from their break.

Newsweek's Katherine Fung, who is inside the courtroom, reported that Merchan addressed the jury upon their return from break—providing instructions about Blanche's prison comment and informing them that he will be the one to decide sentencing.

Merchan's remarks towards Blanche occurred after prosecutor Joshua Steinglass raised an issue with Blanche's prison comment.

Craig Trocino, a law professor at the University of Miami, agreed with Merchan that Blanche's remark was "blatantly inappropriate."

He told Newsweek that an attorney as experienced as Blanche should know better. His remarks most likely weren't a "slip-up" as juries are never instructed to have sympathy for a defendant.

"Everybody who's ever stepped foot as a lawyer in a criminal courtroom knows that a comment to a jury about potential criminal penalties is a no-no," Trocino said.
