*Sigh*

Really, @JohnFlower? Is whether or not you can access some bloody site on the internet the most important thing to you right now in light of recent events?

JaseNZ:

I went with my wife this morning to lay flowers at the Hagley scene, Every nationality and age were there and it was very very emotional. I have no words that can describe what happened and I feel a deep sorrow for the family and friends of those effected.

I have too. It sickens me. I could be angry sad and upset and I probably am but my emotion is deflated. I can’t be bothered doing anything so I’m not. I’ll do some work stuff later. I’m not a victim I probably don’t know any victims, I’m white so I’m safe. But how our our moslem cousins here feel I cannoti imagine. What little I can cli g to is that the funds that have been raised and the.cancelled events and the thoughts that have been conveyed at least show them that we all care. Imagine leaving your loved home land to start a safe life and this happens. Heart breaking

Folks complaining about one ISP or another preventing them from accessing a website or two. There is more important things in life than to give fuel to racists.

If you feel this message is too strong please let me know.

Apparently Tarrant was once a normal guy

This is scary and goes to the heart of one of the real issues that we need to confront. Whilst unlikely to be the next Albert Einstein, the guy appears to have had a reasonable education and upbringing. He also appeared to have benefitted from a legacy from a deceased parent, so even the usual "poor and oppressed and took it out on somebody" angle may not apply. How do we end up with people that actually seriously believe in the kind of **** that he apparently believes in and act on it?

There are more important things in life than allowing terrorist supporting websites to continue to operate and earn revenue from hosting content that glorifies the deaths of fellow New Zealanders.

If they made an effort to moderate the objectionable content (YouTube/Facebook/Twitter et al) then that is one thing. But to actively support and promote and therefor earn revenue from the content is a completely different thing.

If you feel the need to support folks like this as per my post: https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=184&topicid=248227&page_no=13#2199291

Then you also be throwing your voice behind kiddy porn sites too as I see both sorts of content just as vile as each other.

Because they are told time and time again they are under attack, their way of life is under attack, their heritage is under attack. As a white male in the middle class I am bombarded with messages and imagery that poors/gays/trans/arabs/jews/lefties are out to take my money, my home and my way of life. This is the result of benefit bashing/racist slang/yellow fever on property buyers/immigrants cause crime/green's are eco-terrorists/Maori's want to take away my beach access  etc etc being allowed to thrive under the disguise of free speech.

Normal white guys are being told everyone 3 shades darker than them are coming for them

...  I think all gun owners need to accept there are problems within their community and they haven't done enough to prevent crazies. ...

So because of the crazy it probably means you can't get to keep your AR15's. Boo hoo.

What are New Zealand's Gun laws?

The minimum legal age to own a gun in New Zealand is 16, or 18 for military-style semi-automatic weapons. Anyone over those ages who is considered by police to be "fit and proper" can possess a firearm.

All gun-owners must have a licence, but most individual weapons don't have to be registered. New Zealand is one of the few countries where this is the case.

In order to own a gun legally, applicants for a firearm licence must pass a background check of criminal and medical records. Factors like mental health, addiction and domestic violence should be considered.

Once a licence has been issued, gun-owners can buy as many weapons as they want.

While most guns don't have to be registered, a special application does have to be made to police to own military-style semi-automatic weapons, pistols, or other restricted firearms.

Because of this, police say they can't be sure how many legally owned firearms there are in the country as there is "no record of the majority of firearms". *

As of June 2018, there were 246,952 active firearms licences including dealers and individual owners.

The year before, of the 43,509 who people applied for firearms licences, 43,321 were granted them.

The 1990 Aramoana massacre prompted an amendment to the the Arms Act (1983), the main law governing gun use and ownership, restricting the ownership of military-style semi-automatic weapons.

But parliament stopped short of a total ban.

The law was further amended in 2012 to clarify which weapons are restricted.

*  In 2016 New Zealand Police estimated that there were 1.2 million legal firearms owned by civilians - that equates to around one for every four people.

Right now? In my current mindset put them all in jail, Take away their platforms, Remove people in central and local government who spread fear and stoke the fire's of racial and religious tension.

But right now I'm pretty f$@king pissed that in this country this happened

I am a Hong Kong Chinese guy married to a European doctor. And being reasonably introverted, I don't have a huge group of friends and the only European male that I am close to wouldn't even give 1 second to this kind of stuff. What's always been of interest to me is the largely abject failure of these fringe groups to get any significant foothold (relative to their success with males) amongst females. My 3 to 4 closest friends in life are all European females, with quite a diverse range of upbringing and economic statuses, and I just can't help but feel that none of them have ever exhibited even one bit of sympathy for hard-right causes, Trump, and what not. But I've discovered that a sizable minority of acquaintances that I went to university or school with (all males) openly express degrees of sympathy for that kind of crap.

Really, I am not sure what solid conclusion can be drawn from this but it does raise some disturbing questions in my mind.

At least we can amend our gun laws here without fear of a group like the NRA.

Coil: Heck not everyone is immediately aware of the situation or could even understand the scale of it. Especially here in NZ the last thing you’d think is if you’re wearing a hunting jumper and go pickup a kid from school you’ll get arrested for being a terrorist.

On a scale of dumb to stupid, his situational awareness was very low then.

Oh come on. You're backing the wrong horse here Marcus... There was potentially only a few minutes between the shooting and this guy been (wrongly) arrested. What if he was already out walking to school (I don't know if he was), he could already have been 20 minutes into a walk. So he heard sirens - because he was wearing camo gear he should have immediately stripped off or lay on the ground with his arms behind his back in case the police wanted to check him out?

The point is you are victim shaming this guy for wearing a particular style of clothing. Now imagine it was a woman, wearing a short dress and she was sexually assaulted.... her "situational awareness was very low then". That sound pretty effing stupid doesn't it.

Stop defending your poorly considered first comment.

There are also some pretty disturbed females out there. Pauline Hanson is one. Marine Le Pen is another. That awful alt-right blond who wanted to spew her bile here (I honestly can't remember her name) is yet another. What about those images of adoring women holding their babies up to be blessed by Donald Trump at his rallies? I'm not sure there is a gender element here, except maybe in the sense that rabid women find partners more easily than rabid men. Or maybe they just don't commit mass murder when they get sexually frustrated.
