The  Wall Street Journal - Editorial - Trump Is Looking Like a Loser Again

12 August 2024

This refers to Trump's press conference last week:

We need to talk about Donald. ...

By my calculation, about one-third of Mr. Trump’s remarks fell into three categories: false, obtuse or lunatic.

I’m not even talking here about the usual grotesque hyperbolic assertions or baffling verbal manufactures, the finest of which last week was surely the description of 'people dying financially because they can’t buy bacon.'

This is all of a piece with his recent behavior - from his claim that Joe Biden will be back as the Democratic candidate to his insistence that the crowds at Ms. Harris’s rallies are enhanced by artificial intelligence.

This is the problem. It is this Mr. Trump who lost the presidency in 2020. It is this Mr. Trump who lost the House in 2018 and the Senate in the Georgia runoff election in January 2021. ...

Instead of telling [voters] what they are actually getting if they vote Democrat, he is merely reminding them what they will get again if they vote Republican.

I'm more of a lurker than a poster in this thread but this turned up in my  Facebook feed and I thought it worth sharing.🙂

I was expecting to hear Trump say people were dying because of windmills and electrified sharks.

RNZ: Isaac Hayes' family threaten to sue Trump for $3m over use of song

The family of the late soul singer Isaac Hayes has ordered Donald Trump to stop playing the star's song 'Hold On, I'm Coming' at his campaign rallies.

A letter sent to Trump and his team, and shared by Hayes' son on social media, threatens to sue the former US president if he does not comply by 16 August.

The family is also demanding US$3 million (NZD$4.9m) in licensing fees for the campaign's repeated use of the song between 2022 and 2024.

The song, which was made famous by soul duo Sam and Dave, is a regular feature of Trump's rallies, often playing before and after his speeches.

You'll remember Elon Musk's spectacular failure trying to launch Florida Governor and failed presidential candidate Ron DeSantis.

Musk: "The DeSantis launch was definitely a bit of a technical mess. But the thing to remember is that it’s not the end of the world. Technical problems can be fixed, and it’s important to stay focused on the bigger picture.""

DeSantis' event was mocked by many. The Trump campaign, for one, called it a "complete failure."

So Elon Musk says he's did multiple "system scaling tests" ahead of his audio only livestream with Donald Trump.

Note that YouTube simulcasts of "The Coronation of King Charles III" drew over 14 million simultaneous video viewers, so I wonder why Musk is struggled with got 1.3 million audio listeners.

For comparison, the audio podcast "Serial" was regularly doing more audio listeners than that ten years ago. Never heard of "Serial"? Well hopefully that'll be Trump/Musk's fate.

"X" is famous for counting a view as anything autoplaying for over 1 second, including scrolling past.

This fact hasn't been lost on the "X" advertisers seeing exaggerated numbers for active views / engaged views / engagement rates.

I wonder why "Truth Social" isn't doing their own simulcasts :)

AP News: Musk’s interview with Trump marred by technical glitches

Elon Musk’s much-awaited interview with former President Donald Trump was marred by technical glitches on Monday, with people unable to join the audio conversation on X’s Spaces platform.

Eighteen minutes into a conversation that was supposed to start at 8 p.m. EDT., Musk posted on X that the platform was experiencing a “massive” denial-of-service attack (DDOS), which is a federal criminal act that involves flooding a site with data to overwhelm it and knock it offline.

Outage tracker Downdetector reported a spike in reports of X being inaccessible to users starting before the interview but it could not be immediately verified whether this was due to a malicious attack. The rest of X appeared to be operating normally, and X users questioned whether there was a DDOS attack or if the Spaces event was just overwhelmed with people trying to listen in.

Musk had been promoting the event earlier in the day, calling it a conversation rather than an interview. He said X “tested the system with 8 million concurrent listeners earlier today.”

Is the Musk/Trump interview still going? There are so many live streams on YouTube. It sounds like a grumpy old man ranting, and his son trying to get a word in now and then. Despite the craziness I expect it will be a big streaming success for Trump. Goodness knows how many hours of semi-assisted ranting..

Another skeleton that refuses to stay hidden in Trump's closet.

New York Times: Trump flew on charter jet previously owned by 'sex offender' Jeffrey Epstein

Former President Donald J. Trump’s presidential campaign said on Monday that it was unaware that a private plane used by Mr. Trump for campaign travel on Saturday was once owned by Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced financier and sex offender.

Mr. Trump flew from Bozeman, Mont., to Jackson Hole, Wyo., and Aspen, Colo., on the jet, made by Gulfstream, to attend campaign fund-raisers after Mr. Trump’s signature Boeing 757, often referred to as Trump Force One, experienced a mechanical issue en route to a campaign rally in Bozeman on Friday.
...
Mr. Epstein’s planes have long been a source of public interest; he was known to travel with high-profile passengers, including Bill Clinton, Mr. Trump, Prince Andrew and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is now running for president as an independent candidate. Mr. Epstein also brought young women — and girls, according to some who accused Mr. Epstein of sex trafficking — to entertain guests on board.

Mr. Trump and Mr. Epstein had routinely crossed paths over the decades, attending many of the same social events and being photographed together in the 1990s and early 2000s. Mr. Trump spoke enthusiastically about their relationship in the years before Mr. Epstein pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful sex with minors. In 2002, Mr. Trump told New York magazine: “I’ve known Jeff for 15 years. Terrific guy.”

When you posted at it was 3am EDT, so Youtubers just repeating "X" livestream.

Early reviews of Musk/Trump "interview" speaks of Trump literally frothing at the mouth, and slurring his words.

Slate: Truth Social Is Donald Trump’s greatest scam yet

In a conversation with Elon Musk, the former president likely did little to help his campaign—or his investors.

Donald Trump spent Monday providing free publicity for the main competitor of his publicly traded social media company, and you’ll never guess what happened next.

Trump stopped posting on Twitter when the company’s old management banned him following Jan. 6. Elon Musk has urged Trump to come back, but the former president has stayed away, only dropping by to post his mug shot and a fundraising link in August 2023.

After Trump’s Twitter ban, he started Truth Social and housed it under Trump Media & Technology (stock ticker: DJT).

But Trump came back to X on Monday, trying to post his way out of a tough campaign month

Donald Trump provided free publicity for the main competitor of his publicly traded social media company
...
The stock lost 5 percent of its value on Monday and was in a continued slide on Tuesday morning. Apparently it is not good for confidence in a business when the majority owner of that business spends his time propping up a direct competitor that provided the entire basis for the owner’s copycat business.

Ostensibly, the existence of Truth Social has been the only reason Trump has not tweeted over the past few years. However, his campaign is going poorly enough that Trump has abandoned that strategy and decided to compromise his own shareholders. It’s very possible that Trump’s dalliance with Musk on Monday is just the opening salvo in a political comeback effort where his own investors are somewhere between collateral damage and Trump’s personal piggy bank.
...
There is no indication that Trump Media’s earnings have a lot to do with its stock price. Even now, with the stock trading at about $25, half of where it was earlier this year, Trump Media is somehow a nearly $5 billion company. Its main business is cash incineration, with a light side-dish of advertising.

It's a sad statement that all the crimes Trump has committed, a porn star will likely be the only one that may send him to prison before the election.

AP News: A year later, sprawling Georgia election interference case against Donald Trump has stalled

A year after a Georgia grand jury accused Donald Trump and others of illegally trying to overturn the 2020 presidential election in the state, the case has stalled with no chance of going to trial before the end of this year.

When Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis secured the indictment a year ago Thursday, it was the fourth and most sprawling of the criminal cases against the former president. Trump narrowly lost Georgia to Democrat Joe Biden, and Willis used Georgia’s anti-racketeering law to allege that he and 18 others had participated in a wide-ranging scheme to subvert the will of the state’s voters.

Willis’ team notched some early victories in the case, but explosive allegations raised by one of Trump’s co-defendants early this year have caused a delay and could even derail the prosecution.

not to mention her life is now ruined with Trump taking her to caught for Defamation and now asking her to pay his legal costs, I think $700k, but the worst is they demanding her childs paper work, which she is refusing (which any parent would), given she has magats death threats, stalking etc.

the only justice will be if Trump loses election, Florida Nat Security Docs case judge is flipped and starts again and Georgia case has Pres Immunity reversed and both are likely to see him with serious convictions.

Jack Smith while asking for more time due to SCOTUS pres immunity, he should still have all evidence presented mini trial style before the election? (even if actual trial wont occur beforehand, just the evidence reported in real time should hit his popularity further).

IMO all Harris has to do now is counter all his main policies, the way she is calling out him squashing the border bill and then siding with the public honestly on economics on the street, just shatters his hateful Rhetoric. Things like not taxing tips is an example of either just countering or including any sensible policies he has. Drilling oil is the only one Im not sure how she can be lefty on as it has real economic benefits, IF the money was to go to the middle, but the reality is it just offsets his real world policies for the wealthy.

I dont see how you can improve his popularity beyond magats which I think many are flipping on. again she is countering the border and economics/inflation. what else has he got, and even then is it enough to make him not look like a 78yo demented rapist fraudster? I dont think anything can change that image. and a 78yo deteriorating do the people really want that with Red buttons? Then if he does pass away you have a fake, weak, chameleon Vance being autocrat.

I think when it comes to voting he will not regain the moderate republicans hes lost. and if things dont shift fast, current trajectory is looking like a landslide (10pt+)

Go to 18:25, I totally agree with JP on this, Musk has a lot to answer for the riots in the UK, but allowing completely unmoderated disinformation twitter outside unless you agree with Musk its not free speech and nor are bot troll farms. X is losing advertising hand over fist, I hope it gets shut down worldwide. Now is the time for a quality alternative. Telegram is used a lot in the EU, but I think just a generic moderated twitter clone is what people want, without the owner having a 10000x view algorithim for his personal profile and merely scrolling past posts = a view. I think hes ruined Twitter beyond return and has allowed disinformation in politics and wars, he should be raked over the coals.

In a report on the recent email hack:

The report prompted Trump to accuse Iran of hacking his 2024 campaign, but he never alerted the FBI due to his distrust of the agency.

Maybe he should have alerted his good friend Kim Jong Un, or Vladimir Vladimirovich, since he trusts them more than the FBI.
