The Guardian - 'The dumbest climate conversation of all time'

15 August 2024

On Monday, Donald Trump and Elon Musk had a more than two hour-long discussion on X, including – as our environment reporter Oliver Milman put it – “a discursive, often fact-free conversation” about climate.

Climate writer Bill McKibben called the back-and-forth “the dumbest climate conversation of all time” that “spelunked down into entirely new levels of stupidity”.

Trump mused that rising sea levels, caused by melting glaciers, would have the benefit of creating “more oceanfront property”. ...

Musk, meanwhile, said it was wrong to “vilify” the oil and gas industry, the key driver of planet-heating pollution, and that the only imperative to ditch fossil fuels was that they will one day run dry.

It might be funny, were Trump not a serious contender for the US presidency and Musk not the richest person in the world – and the owner of a platform with the potential to spread climate misinformation to millions.

At least 140 people who worked in the Trump administration had a hand in Project 2025, a CNN review found, including more than half of the people listed as authors, editors and contributors.

Propublica: Inside Project 2025’s Secret Training Videos
...
One centerpiece is dozens of never-before-published videos created for Project 2025’s Presidential Administration Academy. The vast majority of these videos — 23 in all, totaling more than 14 hours of content — were provided to ProPublica and Documented by a person who had access to them.

In one video, Bethany Kozma, a conservative activist and former deputy chief of staff at the U.S. Agency for International Development in the Trump administration, downplays the seriousness of climate change and says the movement to combat it is really part of a ploy to “control people.”

“If the American people elect a conservative president, his administration will have to eradicate climate change references from absolutely everywhere,” Kozma says.

In the same video, Kozma calls the idea of gender fluidity “evil.” Another speaker, Katie Sullivan, who was an acting assistant attorney general at the Department of Justice under Trump

Trump has tried to distance himself from Project 2025, falsely saying that he knew nothing about it and had “no idea who is behind it.” In fact, he flew on a private jet with Kevin Roberts, president of the Heritage Foundation, which leads Project 2025. And in a 2022 speech at a Heritage Foundation event, Trump said, “This is a great group and they’re going to lay the groundwork and detail plans for exactly what our movement will do and what your movement will do when the American people give us a colossal mandate to save America.”

A review of the training videos shows that 29 of the 36 speakers have worked for Trump in some capacity

Comedian Desi Lydic: "OK, now I'm suspicious, because the last time Trump said, 'I don't know anything about that', he was talking about Stormy Daniels.

So, did Trump f__k Project 2025?"

Parody quote from Trump: "You know Judge we got off to a bad start.

Your daughter's death threats was because of her bad behavior, not mine.

Junior obviously asked me to ask you for cocaine because you're Columbian, which makes you an expert. You know I love the Columbians in the Netflix show 'Narcos' by the way. So realistic. And Shakira is one of the good ones.

I can't blame you for hating me because I'm such a winner and a gringo. No hard feelings. You people are just hot-blooded, and you can't help it.

Do me a solid and hold off on this sentencing thing, and I'll see I'll buy you some arepas and aguardiente from Little Havana. I can't stand the stuff but you people love it right?"

CBS news: Trump seeks to delay sentencing in "hush money" case until after election

Attorneys for former President Donald Trump asked the judge overseeing his criminal case in New York to delay his sentencing until after the presidential election in November, arguing that a delay is necessary to resolve ongoing legal challenges to his conviction.

In a letter to Justice Juan Merchan, the judge overseeing the case, Trump attorneys Todd Blanche and Emil Bove noted that the current sentencing date of Sept. 18 would come after early voting has already begun.

"Sentencing is currently scheduled to occur after the commencement of early voting in the Presidential election," Blanche and Bove wrote. "By adjourning the sentencing until after that election … the Court would reduce, even if not eliminate, issues regarding the integrity of any future proceedings."

Trump was convicted by a unanimous jury on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in May. Prosecutors had argued he orchestrated a scheme while president to hide reimbursements to a lawyer who wired a "hush money" payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels days before the 2016 presidential election to keep voters from learning about allegations of an extramarital sexual encounter. Trump denied the encounter and pleaded not guilty.

Trump has sought to overturn the conviction, citing a recent Supreme Court ruling on "presidential immunity." His lawyers argued that delaying the sentencing would allow them more time to plan for appealing a rejection of their effort to overturn the case. The judge has said he'll rule on that motion on Sept. 16

Something that bothers me but doesn’t seem to get discussed much is  what happens after Trump? I don’t think he can win and I hope he doesn’t, but what then? Today’s Republican party, and Trump himself, are the result of a process that has been going on at least since the Tea Party movement, and in some senses it reaches back to the 1960s and the John Birch Society and even the House Un-American Activities Committee and McCarthy.

There has always been a strong conservative current in American society that goes far beyond ordinary conservatism. Behind the scenes, out of public view, there are individuals convinced they serve a higher cause that justifies any means and they are constantly chip chip chipping away at the institutions designed to protect against abuses of power. They have the patience of cats and the determination of faith and are committed to a long game that can transcend generations.

At the moment those of us who reject Trumpism are fixated on the presidential election and the prospect of Trump’s defeat. But beating him will not fix the deeper issue. It just puts it off. Whether Vance follows in his footsteps or someone else, the chipping will continue, as it did with the abortion issue. The price of freedom is eternal vigilance and after Trump is gone that will matter more than ever.

I'm confident that Trump won't be re-elected in November. However, he won't be going anywhere of his own volition, it'll just be another four years of the same whining, lying craziness that we've had to put up with since 2016. Only if he goes to prison, or the GOP manage to unite and dump him, might we see some change in the situation.

Trump crowned? No faux King way!

Donald Trump insults veterans yet again

Former President Donald Trump lauded a wealthy donor on whom he bestowed the Presidential Medal of Freedom as having gotten the "better" award compared to t …

MSNBC

Trump was referring to the highest military honor bestowed for valor in combat. The Medal of Honor is often mistakenly called the Congressional Medal of Honor.

“I watched Sheldon sitting so proud in the White House when we gave Miriam the Presidential Medal of Freedom"

That’s the highest award you can get as a civilian. It’s the equivalent of the Congressional Medal of Honor

But civilian version, it’s actually much better because everyone [who] gets the Congressional Medal of Honor, they're soldiers.

They’re either in very bad shape because they’ve been hit so many times by bullets or they’re dead

She gets it, and she’s a healthy, beautiful woman, and they’re rated equal, but she got the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and she got it for — and that’s through committees and everything else.”

What the firetruck is wrong with Trump's audience clapping as he bags soldiers? They're as bad as he is, if not worse for enabling him!

Trump is stupid and doesn't understand himself so how do you expect his genuflecting audience to understand❓
