geekIT: What I fail to understand is why Americans continue to treat this loathsome creature as a human being.

Because doing anything else would only degrade humanity.

Seems Donald thinks there is a third world war coming.

I think we can all agree he's the perfect guy to have in charge if that happened.

The NY Times - Opinion - Trump Isn’t Finished  [unlocked free link]

Aug. 21, 2024

Laurence Tribe, a law professor at Harvard:

All the dangers foreign and domestic posed by Trump’s cruelly vindictive, self-aggrandizing, morally unconstrained, reality-defying character ... would be magnified many times over in any subsequent term by three factors:

First, he has systematically eroded the norms and the institutional guardrails that initially set boundaries on the damage he and his now more carefully chosen loyalist enablers are poised to do ...

Second, their failures to insulate themselves from electoral and legal constraints during the dry run of 2017-21 have led them to formulate far more sophisticated and less vulnerable plans for their second attempt at consolidating permanent control ...

And third, their capture of the Supreme Court and indeed much of the federal judiciary has put in place devastating precedents like the immunity ruling of July 1 that will license a virtually limitless autocratic power - [unless] they are stopped during the epic struggle that will reach one climax this Nov. 5, and another next Jan. 6.

Timothy Snyder, a historian at Yale and an expert on the regimes of Stalin and Hitler:

Democracy depends upon example, and Trump sets the worst possible one. He has openly admired dictators his entire life. He would encourage Xi and Putin.

The Russians make it completely clear that a Trump presidency is their hope for victory in Ukraine.

Allowing Russia to win that war, which I think is Trump’s likely orientation, destabilizes Europe, encourages China toward aggression in the Pacific, and undermines the rule of law everywhere.

The whole (long) editorial is worth reading.

Project 2025 says no convicts allowed in the Trump administration. Have they run that past Trump?

Anyone know which "Encrypted message platforms" operate out of NZ?

I suspect it's just be a shelf company or DNS registration, with the actual server somewhere else, but its interesting.....

"According to US media reports, gunman Thomas Crooks used encrypted messaging accounts on platforms located in New Zealand, Belgium and Germany."

He did have a Discord account, which is technically encrypted. Discord is mostly used by gamers.

SSL is used to secure internet connections by encrypting data between a website and a browser or between two servers. HTTPS appears in the URL when a website is secured by an SSL/TLS certificate.

But when criminals and right-wing nuts think of "encrypted message platforms" most likely think of Signal, and Telegram. Threema is sometimes mentioned for people using Android phones.

Yes, suspect this is a very broad non-expert interpretation of 'encrypted messaging account'. That said, currently only the major telcos are obligated under TICSA to provide clear text intercept capabilities. You will note that iMessage, Signal and Whatsapp are all still working here, for now. At some point a Minister might decide to deem them as telcos for the purposes of TICSA and that will be a very interesting day.

But a small player can offer a true E2E encrypted service as long as they fly under the radar.

Oh, the grift never stops. What a rug pull this will be

Trump promotes family's new crypto platform, 'The Defiant Ones' (cnbc.com)

“For too long, the average American has been squeezed by the big banks and financial elites,” Trump wrote. “It’s time we take a stand — together.”

Trump’s post includes a link to a Telegram channel called “The DeFiant Ones,” which had approximately 29,000 followers as of Thursday morning, and climbing.

An Aug. 15 post describes the group chat as “the only official Telegram channel for the Trump DeFi project” which is building “the future of finance.”

Two of Trump’s sons, Eric Trump and and Donald Jr., have spent weeks teasing the forthcoming platform, which Eric recently described as “digital real estate.”

“It’s equitable. It’s collateral anyone can get access to and do so instantly,” Eric told the New York Post earlier this month. “I don’t know if people realize what a shake up that is for the world of banking and finance. I hope we can help change that.”

When Eric Trump says "It’s collateral anyone can get access to and do so instantly" I suspect it means they can get the money at any time.

WASHINGTON — Multiple members of the Kennedy family denounced Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s decision to endorse former President Donald Trump, calling the move a "betrayal."

"We want an America filled with hope and bound together by a shared vision of a brighter future, a future defined by individual freedom, economic promise and national pride," said a statement signed by five of the former independent presidential candidate's siblings.

"We believe in Harris and Walz," the statement continued. "Our brother Bobby's decision to endorse Trump today is a betrayal of the values that our father and our family hold most dear. It is a sad ending to a sad story."

RFK Jnr. was 14 when his dad was assassinated. That does something to you. He had 10 siblings. One died of a drug overdose. I am not defending him. I think he has mental issues but he is an adult capable of making informed decisions and taking responsibility for them. I was inspired by his father and devastated when he was murdered. It is a tragedy of Shakespearian proportions that the son is following this course.
