Some rather biting/scathing/witty/clever commentary from The Bulwark today, following on from the orange buffoon banging on about wanting CBS (or someone) to lose their broadcasting license for daring to air an edited interview of Harris:

https://www.thebulwark.com/p/the-soft-bigotry-of-our-trump-expectations

GOTTA TAKE AWAY THEIR BROADCASTING LICENSE NOW. THEM'S THE RULES: CNN is out this morning with a report that Fox News edited out “many of Trump’s rambling comments and false claims,” when it broadcast an interview with Trump following a “surprise” visit to a barbershop in the Bronx. Since editing a television interview is now a violation of the Geneva Conventions, we expect a few Truth Social posts in the next couple of hours calling on Fox to be taken off the air.

The hypocrisy from Trump is honestly getting ridiculous.

Orban on his recent visit to MarLargo probably passed on some lessons,
along with instructions from 'The Boss' Putin that could only be delivered person to person.

How Hungary’s Orbán uses control of the media to escape scrutiny and keep the public in the dark

""
“Everything has fallen apart in Hungary. The state essentially does not function, there’s only propaganda and lies,” said Péter Magyar, the leader of that new party who has emerged in recent months as perhaps the most formidable challenge yet to Orbán’s rule.
""
But according to Péter Krekó, an analyst and head of the Political Capital think tank in Budapest, Orbán has created “an almost Orwellian environment” where the government weaponizes control of a majority of news outlets to limit Hungarians’ decisions.

“Hungary has become a quite successful informational autocracy, or spin dictatorship,” Krekó said.

The restriction of Hungary’s free press directly affects informed democratic participation. Opposition politicians have long complained that they only get five minutes of air time every four years on public television, the legal minimum, to present their platforms before elections.

“He listened to these radio stations where they pushed those simple talking points, it completely changed his personality,” Simon said. “I felt sometimes he’d been kidnapped, and his brain was replaced with a Fidesz brain.”

In December, after 33 years of marriage, they agreed to divorce.

“I said to him several times, ‘You have to choose: me or Fidesz,’” she said. “He said Fidesz.”

And lest you think "it can't happen here", this is exactly what Faux News does to people.  "Aliens ate our dad's brain" is one way I've seen it expressed, they become totally different people.

Sensational.

Also - if you have a spare 15-20 minutes - the 100 worst things Trump has done since announcing his presidential bid in 2015:

https://newrepublic.com/article/187252/trump-100-worst-things-list-2015-2024

The last parts of this list were posted overnight. I feel the top two items are worth repeating due to the extremity of them:

2. A Pandemic of MAGA Stupidity

Where to start? On February 26, 2020, there were 15 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the United States that were related to travel or close contact to travelers in the U.S.—“and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero,” Trump promised. From February to the end of October, he would make similar promises at least 37 more times. He also suggested injecting bleach to kill the virus, or hitting “the body with a tremendous … ultraviolet or just very powerful light.” He expressed skepticism of masks. He admitted to journalist Bob Woodward that he knew Covid was “deadly stuff” but wanted to “play it down.” He held superspreader rallies that led to 30,000 more cases. By the time Trump left office in early 2021, the virus had killed more than 400,000 people in the U.S.—and 40 percent of those deaths, a major study later found, could have been prevented.—R.K.

1. A Day That Lives in Infamy—or So We Hope

President Trump’s speech at the Ellipse on January 6, 2021, began, as his speeches often do, with a lie: “We have hundreds of thousands of people here.” He would also lie about the 2020 election, claiming there was massive fraud and that he didn’t lose. But on this day, such bluster would be the least of Trump’s offenses, as he ended his speech vowing to “fight like hell” and imploring the crowd to walk with him down Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol—“to try and give [Republicans] the kind of pride and boldness that they need to take back our country.” The crowd obeyed, of course, and so began the first attempted coup in U.S. history, which would leave thousands traumatized, hundreds injured, and several dead. Never forget, truly.—R.K.

And all the MAGA people can't see how everything he says is precisely what they are supposedly "against".

The threats of using the Dept of Justice against his opponents. The threats against news outlets. The sexual assaults. The felonies.

These people are voting against themselves.

The stupid. It hurts.

Trump, along with many others of his ilk, has learnt to exploit the tendency of humans to be influenced by untrue statements. It's this faculty that allows us to enjoy fictional books, movies, TV shows, music and poetry, but it has a downside - it forces us to give initial equal credence to the fiction of lies and propaganda.

When we hear any statement, our instant reaction is to attempt to understand it, which allows its message to lodge in our brain while we examine it. This split-second process is automatic and cannot be avoided unless we cover our ears.

If we learn, after one or more exposures, that we disagree with a certain message or source or individual, we can filter out that source for future reference, but it has to be a conscious decision. Even then, there's no guarantee that we won't rescind that decision at some future date, because the possible use of that 'now-understood' data comes down to a simple Yes-No option. We don't need to filter it again.

Trump might have a less than average IQ, and might also now be brain-damaged, but he's an expert at exploiting this human weakness for his own benefit.

Republicans only interested in Hunter Biden, zero interest in Jared Kushner.

Democrats Ask For Special Counsel Investigation Into Whether Jared Kushner Acted As Foreign Agent: Forbes

Democrats congressmen asked the Attorney General to appoint a special counsel to investigate Jared Kushner—a former senior White House adviser to his father-in-law Donald Trump—for possibly acting as an unregistered foreign agent.

Investigators found Kushner’s firm, Affinity Partners, has received more than $150 million since the end of Trump’s term from foreign clients “while generating no return on investment.”

The payments came as Kushner remained politically active, specifically on matters of U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East

The investigation found $87 million came from the Saudi government, and the company has only invested “a small fraction of funds it has received from the sovereign wealth funds of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.”

The letter also cites an Oct. 4 Reuters report alleging Kushner “discussed U.S.–Saudi diplomatic negotiations involving Israel with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman multiple times since leaving the Trump administration.”

The letter from the lawmakers to Garland said there is “substantial reason to believe that the Saudi government’s decision to engage Affinity for investment advice is a fig leaf for funneling money directly” to Kushner and his wife, Ivanka Trump, noting that Kushner had no experience in private equity prior to starting Affinity.

If Trump wins next month, all that will come to a screeching halt though, won't it?

I can't quote specific parts of this article. It's dense and well-researched, and you should spend 15 - 30 minutes reading it.

1933 and the definition of Fascism.

It tries to define Fascist leaders and Fascism ideology based on historical records, then uses this definition to answer two questions: "Is Trump a Fascist leader?" and "Is Trumpism a Fascist ideology?"

No surprises here. Trump is a Fascist leader, and Trumpism is a Fascist ideology.

The author is "Dr. Bret C. Devereaux [is] an ancient and military historian who currently teaches as a Teaching Assistant Professor at North Carolina State University. He has his PhD in ancient history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his MA in classical civilizations from Florida State University."

Everyone in America should read this article. But probably won't

Everyone on this forum should read this article. But, unfortunately, although you might read it, your knowledge probably won't help persuade American voters to make the right decision. Simply put, if Trump is reelected, everyone in the world can expect a future of increasing danger, deprivation, and hardship, ending with the possible extinction of the bulk of the human race within 100-150 years.

I read it all. If I was scared before, multiply that by 1,000.

And if we think this is just an American problem, think again.

A pity I am an atheist, unlike Trump (ha ha), so I don't have a Higher Being to ask for help.

It is not just an American problem. I am checking in from Queensland, where we just elected a majority government whose only campaign promises were "We'll roll back coal royalty increases, somehow still fund everything Labor said, and we aren't Labor."

And it's not just Queensland. The Northern Territory has followed a similar path.

We, as New Zealanders, did, too. The NACT government got up and did—actually, what? I'm pretty sure it's nothing. Given their platform, I'm just saying I'm OK with them doing nothing.

At least we have ranked-choice voting, which the LNP wants to abolish and has committed to doing so. To be fair - the commitment was to abolish compulsory ranked choice - meaning "number every box" (probably like DHB elections?)

This means that " votes can be exhausted/ignored if they don't meet 2TP criteria". This is basically anti-left since this policy would hurt Labor (annoying typo intentional) and Greens exclusively.

To briefly get off-topic, there's the "resource curse", also known as the "paradox of plenty".

Also a country only has one chance to extract nonrenewable natural resources, whether it's oil, coal, and diamonds, so they better get it right.

For extreme example of the bad, Nauru was once one of the richest countries in the world due to its vast deposits of phosphate, which is essentially fossilized bird droppings, but now penniless.

For the extreme example of good, see Norway. It has one of the world's highest taxes on oil and gas production, and it channels these revenues into its sovereign wealth fund.
