I saw some things people had posted to AOC on a thread where she asked for genuine reasons from people who had voted for Trump for president but her for Congress. One of the responses was because neither Trump nor AOC tell them lies, and I thought ... Trump says nothing but lies...

I read some commentary that Trump offered tax cuts last time and didn't deliver. I still don't really know what those were either.

I think you might mean this? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tax_Cuts_and_Jobs_Act

Was scheduled to expire in 2025 but the orange buffoon will probably want to keep those tax cuts for his mates in big business 🙄

Thanks I found that article interesting. The graph is the best thing I've seen. Trump's first term rates must be Trump's 2018 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

US Federal marginal income tax rates: comparison of 2018, 2017, 2016 rates for individual and married filers

Presumably the 2018 rates are still in effect?

Inflation is the easiest explanation for Trump's win. I've read somewhere Trump's promised tax cuts were attractive. I have not seen a list of what cuts Trump was offering to the average worker.

I read some commentary that Trump offered tax cuts last time and didn't deliver. I still don't really know what those were either.

On his website pdf the most detail I can find is.. "Make Trump Tax Cuts Permanent and No Tax on Tips. Republicans will make permanent the provisions of the Trump Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that doubled the standard deduction, expanded the Child Tax Credit, and spurred Economic Growth for all Americans. We will eliminate Taxes on Tips for millions of Restaurant and Hospitality Workers, and pursue additional Tax Cuts"

Yeah...lets see what happens to wages and if employers start taking a bigger slice of the pie.

Restaurant workers can be paid as little as $2.50 an hour.

The loss of Obamacare will bankrupt even more Americans

Yeah...lets see what happens to wages and if employers start taking a bigger slice of the pie.

That's the thing with the emphasis on inflation, it's only one component of a much larger set of variables that include { inflation/interest rates, unemployment, economic growth, personal bankruptcy rates }.  You can make any of those variables do whatever if you want if you don't care what happens to the others.

OTOH inflation by itself makes a great simplistic vote-getter to focus on if your target is financially illiterate.  And also the people who voted for him.

I bet  if I'd started a thread like this about Harris I'd be banned from GZ  but because it's anti Trump then it's OK.

Witness our own government who changed the law to make sure RBNZ could not consider unemployment when dealing with inflation.

Inflation is going down (it was already starting go down before the election) but now unemployment is the highest it has been in a decade other than a brief spike during the COVID lockdowns. So sure, inflation going down has started to make life a little easier for me ... but my job is pretty safe. Given the choice between a job and a slightly slower drop in inflation there are probably tens of thousands of people right now really wishing they could have the latter.

Fear not though, decent chance inflation and high interest rates will be back before you've had time to start to really miss them.

No, it'd just be a short thread, mostly about how she still implicitly supports genocide in Gaza by continuing to sell arms to Israel.

Well, this is shocking news. The judge who declined to treat Trump like anyone else and sentence him before the election because somehow it was the court's problem that the GOP chose a freshly convicted criminal as their candidate has put off his decision again.

Ahhh...conspiracy...nice

You could have for example have created a thread to see what happens....did you consider that BEFORE your post ?

BUT if it gets too abusive, flamebait, etc then yes various accounts may find they lose access to politics , as had happened to other threads.

Trump is planning to try and appoint a Fox News cronie to be the new Defence Secretary.

“With Pete at the helm, America’s enemies are on notice — Our Military will be Great Again, and America will Never Back Down,” Trump said in a statement.

The NY Times - Trump names Musk and Ramaswamy heads of a government efficiency effort

breaking

How do you slash, cut, restructure and even dismantle parts of the federal government?

If you’re President-elect Donald J. Trump, you turn to two wealthy entrepreneurs: the spaceship-inventing, electric-car-building owner of a social media platform and a moneymaking former pharmaceutical executive who was once one of your presidential rivals.

Mr. Trump said on Tuesday that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will lead what he called the Department of Government Efficiency. It will be, he said, “the Manhattan Project” of this era, driving “drastic change” throughout the government with major cuts and new efficiencies in bloated agencies in the federal bureaucracy ...

Oh Joy!  😕

Two fascist billionaires will "solve" America's problems?

look if this "Manhattan Project" ultimately ends up with them blowing themselves up or getting on the first rocket to Mars, I don't see why we shouldn't encourage them as much as possible
