His nominee for defence secretary is facing quite a few questions to his suitability for the role now.

I guess that's what happens when you want to fill your staff in a hurry with nothing but yes men - people dig into their backgrounds and find things you conveniently ignored (or hoped no one else would find out about). Be interesting to see where this goes next.

...
Hegseth claimed it was because of the medieval Jerusalem Cross on his chest, but he also has the words "Deus Vult" on his bicep - a phrase meaning "God wills it" that was used by anti-Muslim crusaders in the Middle Ages.

European medieval imagery and slogans have been widely adopted by white supremacists and neo-Nazis in recent years, but Hegseth says his tattoos simply reflect his faith.

"It's a Christian symbol," the author of a 2020 book entitled American Crusade said of the Jerusalem Cross.
...
As we've learned from the conservative Supreme Court Justices when nominated, conservatives have no problem with being deceptive, or downright lying.

Hegseth had to actively seek out "Deus Vult" as a dog whistle.

I did a search. There is literally no recent articles that use the phrase "Deus Vult" without mentioning Islam, Muslims, or the Crusades.

The phrase is historically and contextually tied to those topics, and Hegsworth knows it.

Wow, there's going to be a lot of people going to lose a lot on crypto.

It would have been the same idiots who purchased lots of gold before the election, when they thought Kamala may win, and the Biblical apocalypse / end times / rapture would begin.

Trump victory drives gold to near 2-month lows as investors pile into equities, cryptocurrencies: CNBC

Gold prices have tumbled to near two-month lows as the dollar continues to strengthen following Donald Trump’s election victory last week.

The recent slide has put the breakers on the bullion’s rally, which has seen a series of record-breaking milestones over the past year.

“There’s a pause in the bull market in gold and silver, and that may continue for the next couple of weeks or so,” said Citi’s global head of commodities research Maximilian Layton.

Imagine what it must be like inside Trump's head. Something like Dante's Nine Circles of Hell - Limbo, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Wrath, Heresy, Violence, Fraud, Treachery - combined in one.

The question arises as to whether the USA is sitting in front of or in a cage at the zoo.

In any case, we are watching with interest to see what will become of the future sleights of hand, even if we are occasionally get hit with something from the cage, whether intentionally or unintentionally. Either way, we shouldn't take this as a good example.

How ridiculous is this.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/republicans-suddenly-think-economys-great-170000139.html

The economy Donald Trump said was broken? All it took was him winning, and consumer sentiment among Republicans soared.

Elections? Suddenly Republicans are on board with the reality that they’re secure. House Speaker Mike Johnson said he saw no evidence of fraud in the 2024 campaign.

Summary:
Trump loses = Republicans say, "election fraud! Election fraud!"

Trump wins = Republicans say, "oh, beautiful free and fair election!"

It's a frikken' cult 🙄

However:

The risk for Republicans is that the honeymoon period won’t last forever. With Trump in the White House and GOP control of the House and the Senate, Americans will be looking for a place to cast the blame if they don’t see the improvements they’re craving.

🤞

Oh, assigning blame will be easy. Immigrants. RINOs. The Deep State. George Soros. And if all else fails the catch-all vreditel, approximately "wrecker" in Stalinist terminology, will be blamed.  A famous example was the 1937 Soviet census, which didn't give the results it was supposed to so the statisticians who carried out the analysis were charged with wrecking and sent to the gulags. Finding scapegoats to feed to the far-right nutters will be a piece of cake.

For people with some time to kill, google "late soviet america", comparing the current state of the US with the last days of the Soviet Union.  If you don't mind sitting through a longish talk, historian Niall Ferguson has one.

Unfortunately for us in Kiwiland, being far away isn't going to protect us from further US decline. Some of the factors at play in the US affect us too, such as increasing social and financial inequality and increasing misinformation.

On the up side, at least we have a different history and culture so I am hopeful this delays our decline somewhat.

I suppose you don't want too much competition and unseemly fighting over the young interns.
Trumps break up with Epstein may have been a result of him and Elaine poaching from his staff.

For the others, the drug store may be a distraction

White House clinic handed out medications with little oversight during past administrations, new investigation shows

Another reason for Elon Musk to keep close to Trump and set up camp in the White House.
Now he can get a more constant supply of the 'good stuff'.

RFK might be concerned, until he can confirm, they are not vaccines.

I think this is going to be common, with any story about the next four years: "A bit of rough language. Not safe for work"

One of the panel is Republican Congressman Tim Burchett.

Burchett responded to a local 2023 shooting, where three nine-year-old students and three staff members were killed: "It's a horrible, horrible situation, and we're not going to fix it. Criminals are gonna be criminals" and there's no "real role" for Congress in reducing gun violence, other than to "mess things up".

After a local D.J. was killed and 22 others were wounded in the 2024 Kansas City parade shooting, Burchett inaccurately identified someone as the shooter, and also incorrectly claimed he was an "illegal alien". Burchett's social media post received 1.4 million views.

However to his benefit he's one one of the few Republicans who is still friendly to Democrats.

RFK Jr, Matt Gaetz, and the Rest of Trump's Creative Cabinet

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/elon-musk-boris-epshteyn-trump-cabinet-b2649097.html

Musk is clashing with longtime Trump attorney and adviser Boris Epshteyn, including questioning his influence in president-elect’s nominations for his Cabinet and top White House jobs, Axios has reported, citing people familiar with the conversations.

The billionaire accused Epshteyn of leaking information about Trump’s transition process, including personnel picks, during a “massive blowup” and a “huge explosion” between the two men during a dinner in front of guests at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club, according to Axios.

I knew something like this would happen sooner or later. Are the knives coming out already?
