The NY Times - Trump Backs Down on Reciprocal Tariffs for 90 Days  (free unlocked link)

breaking

Stocks immediately made steep gains after President Trump’s reversal.

But he said China would not be included, raising tariffs on its exports to 125 percent after Beijing announced a new round of retaliation.

This rally seems very premature to me. They're on again, off again, on again, off again - for all anyone knows he will change his mind again tomorrow and announce eleventy gajillion percent tariffs on the entire solar system backdated to the year 1386.

AlterNet - Here’s why Trump really 'capitulated' to market pressure

today

In a Wednesday segment on Fox Business, commentator Charles Gasparino said that several sources confided to him that it was actually "the White House who capitulated."

Gasparino said that the administration ultimately pulled back because of threats that Japan - which he said runs "major money management firms that are involved in the bond market" - was contemplating dumping some of its estimated $1.26 trillion in U.S. Treasury securities.

Gasparino said that he was told Japan now believed the United States bond market "was not a great place to do business."

"He had no choice," Gasparino added. "The gun was at his head. It was very bad."

U.S. Treasury securities - which make up the vast bulk of the $36 trillion national debt - are the primary way in which institutional investors and foreign governments choose to park their money. ...

... if a major buyer of treasuries decided to dump their holdings, it could potentially trigger a sell-off throughout the rest of the bond market, causing a global financial crisis.

He's so full of crap, this 90-day thing was hinted at a few days ago, and the answer was an emphatic "no", and yet here we are 🙄

Caved in. Due to:

Global indignation

Stocks tanking

US businesses angry

GOP pushing back on him

No doubt he got advice that he and GOP and mid terms will tank

Reports of Ships dumping containers into the sea.
https://www.scmp.com/economy/china-economy/article/3305834/chinese-exporters-said-be-ditching-shipments-mid-voyage-avoid-crushing-trump-tariffs?module=inline&pgtype=article

""
Chinese exporters are taking the drastic step of ditching shipments mid-voyage and surrendering containers to shipping companies to avoid crushing tariff costs.
""

One company also reporting its container volume to USA down by 10x

If you are sailing a small ship anywhere between China and west coast of USA might be a bit of an obstacle course.
All it takes is one container floating just below the waves.

This sounds like more Trump BS.

Why would the Chinese exporters be dumping containers into the sea? American importers pay the tariffs, not Chinese exporters. The Chinese exporters were paid before the container was put on the boat. They might sell less in future, but that has no impact on what's already on the boat.

I guess even a God has a master.

I suspect the real reason was Trump's bone spurs, after all these decades, started to ache, and he could no longer play golf.

Absolutely hilarious. What was it Leavitt was telling us yesterday, Trump and his "spine of steel" will never back down. Wipes six trillion dollars off America Inc's value, then comes the predictable flip-flop from the oh-so-astute "businessman". The only surprise here is that he's been bankrupted only six times!

For his next trick, given his efforts after the 2020 election, I wouldn't be surprised to hear him claim he's already ended the Russia-Ukraine war despite all the evidence to the contrary. The man's stupidity and delusion knows no bounds.

Horsesh!t from Trump, any shipments that were already underway are exempt from the new tariffs. If anything they will be more valuable.

That doesn't say they're dumping them into the sea, just "abandoning goods already on the water and giving them to the shipping company".  In other words "they're your problem now".  It's not like you can just pick them up and toss them over the side.

Ah but did you hear that he won the golf tournament on his own golf course?  Did you hear that?  He won.  Are you sure you got that?  Might want to write it down.

"Yippy" might have been among RFK Jr suggestions, in his role as United States Secretary of Health and Human Services. Also suggested reason for trillion dollar losses
  • The Vapours
  • Melancholia
  • Dropsy
  • Brain Fever
  • Milk Leg
  • Biliousness
  • Weakness of the Nerves
  • Bad Blood
  • Wasting Disease
In sports, the yips refer to a sudden and unexplained loss of ability to execute motor skills in veteran athletes, such as a golf swing or putt.

Trump is correct in one statement. I often get queasy watching Trump. It's like watching a small child pretending to be a Jedi Master while waving an electric carving knife.

Trump:

"I thought that people were jumping a little bit out of line. They were getting yippie, you known a little yippie, a little afraid.
...
The bond market is very tricky. I was watching it. But if you look at it now, it's it's beautiful. The bond market right now is beautiful. But yeah, I saw last night where people were getting a little queasy."

Could Trump's be the idiot herald pronouncing "they were getting yippie", accidently declaring the return of 1969 counterculture?

Around 1969, yippies was shorthand for the Youth International PartyThey were known for their theatrical street actions and stunts intended to draw media attention and illustrate their contempt for the mainstream political process and capitalist values.

Nutty But Revealing Yippie Movie Gives A Sense Of 1969. What Were They Thinking?
