My final words will share what I was speaking with my son today he says "the hatred he fought in foreign lands has reached his haven", he fears it will never be that haven again.

In Wellington:

Vigil for Christchurch Sunday 17 March

Wellington Mayor Justin Lester has announced that a public vigil will be held in the capital tomorrow (Sunday 17 March) in the wake of the Christchurch terrorist attack.

The vigil will be in Te Ngākau Civic Square, starting at 6pm.

The Mayor says the vigil will give Wellingtonians the opportunity to show their support for the victims and their families, our Muslim community and all citizens of Christchurch.

The event has been organised by Wellington City Council in partnership with Wellington Interfaith Council, the Wellington Multicultural Council and ChangeMakers Resettlement Forum.

There will be free on-street parking in the CBD from 4pm tomorrow.

Statement from Jacinda Ardern on Christchurch mass shooting – 3.30pm 16 March

I will give you an update on information that I have as at 3.30pm today. Many of you will know that this morning a contingent of community leaders met together at a refugee centre in Christchurch. It was an important opportunity for us to share the grief of New Zealanders directly with those who have experienced so much loss. Many of you will have been there, and will know that the discussion firstly acknowledged that this is not the New Zealand that any of us know. Questions turned to issues of security. The Commissioner has advised that security from the Police will continue at Mosques throughout New Zealand until it is deemed that there is no longer a threat. Beyond that it will be important that police, communities and central government continue to stay in dialogue and ensure that people feel safe and secure. We also visited those who have congregated at Hagley College. Many there are the direct friends and family members of those who have lost their lives. There the concern focuses predominantly on the burial focus and ensuring that that is kept in line with custom. Police are continuing to liaise directly with family members and are trying to do all they can to meet the expectations of all who are there this afternoon. In terms of a further update on details we have to hand, 39 people remain in hospital and 11 in ICU. Those injured range from young children to the elderly. They include men, women and children and they were among those who had been both killed and injured. I’ll give a quick update on the offender who has been arrested and charged. I want to acknowledge firstly that the police responded immediately to the call that they received relating to the attack. The individual charged was in custody 36 minutes from receiving the first call. The offender was mobile. There were two other firearms in the vehicle the offender was in and it absolutely was his intention to continue with his attack.

The 28-year-old male has been charged and remanded in custody to appear in the High Court on the 5th of April. As the commissioner has said, the man is currently facing one count of murder but obviously there will be further charges laid. Police are working to build a picture of this tragic event, a complex and comprehensive investigation is under way. The Police Commissioner has already said he’ll look to provide further details to you around that investigation tomorrow. That update will include what has happened to the two individuals you’re aware of that were arrested, that I spoke about earlier today. I know that the burial of victims is a key concern for members of the community. Deputy Commissioner of Maori and Ethnic Services Wally Haumaha has travelled to Christchurch. He was there with us at Hagley College. Alongside 15 additional ethnic liaison officers who are working to support the community. These specialists will work alongside local staff to support families there. They are assisting to repatriate them with their loved ones in a way that is consistent with the Muslim faith, taking into account these unprecedented circumstances and the obligations to the Coroner. I want to also advise that the Ministry of Education is continuing to support Christchurch schools and learning centres. Our Ministry trauma team was mobilised yesterday and further resources are being considered as necessary. Communications will go out today to principals and early learning centre leaders in Christchurch about how to access support. Principals and early learning leaders in all other regions will receive advice tomorrow. The Ministry is preparing communication and resources that will also be live on their website. And trauma teams in all regions are ready to mobilise. I want to also acknowledge that Christchurch and Canterbury schools already have embedded within them a team of mental health and support workers under the Mana Ake Programme. That was rolled out in response to the trauma attached to the earthquakes and the impact it’s had on the community. So that does mean that our schools in this region already have extra levels of support that not every school would usually have.

I think a lot of people still don't realise that this incident could have been a lot worse. Based on media reports (and simply from comparing the grim toll at the second mosque as opposed to the one at Linwood), it appears that someone tackled our loser shooter at Linwood, grabbed one of his guns, but didn't manage to shoot our guy. This enabled many more people at Linwood to run away. Loser then hopped into a car and continued his massacre elsewhere. It's only pure luck and on account of extraordinary exceptional bravery of one person that the death toll isn't a lot higher.

Other way around. While details were rolling in about the Deans ave and responding there, he was doing Linwood. Bailed down Brougham toward southern motorway and was rammed. (footage you see of takedown) by a couple of rural lincoln officers. Time between start/end of incident. 32mins.

I stand suitably corrected. Not that I enjoy the thought of wishing death upon the monster -- it was a pity that he wasn't taken down at Linwood. I guess fate looked brightly upon the wrong person yesterday. And I wonder whether it'd be worthwhile for the police to look into a mass alert system like the one that Civil Defence has. It would be triggered in the event of significant reported violence in, for example, places of worship (on an assumption that people who attack places of worship are committing hate crimes at a minimum and won''t stop until arrested) and then everyone would be warned to just leave all such places. The potential for mass panic is there but might be worth looking into.

Edit: I thoroughly fail at geography and place names.

Meanwhile, in Trump's America, racists are being racists and creating conspiracies:

RUSH LIMBAUGH (HOST): The terrorist had published a manifesto and the manifesto includes the claim from the terrorist shooter that he's not a conservative, that he's not a Christian, that he identifies as an eco-fascist, and he adds that he disagrees with Trump on politics.

...

The idea that there is far more crazed right-wing terrorism in America than there is any other kind is nothing more than a media narrative manufactured out of whole cloth, and it's just waiting for events like this to take place, and this is what happens, folks. I don't know, you probably get up and you see this news story and you just -- in addition to all of the emotion you have over the sheer shock, terror, and horror of it all, then you realize you're going to face a whole day of the politicization of it. You realize you're going to face a whole day of Donald Trump being blamed for it, or you being blamed for it, or things you believe in being blamed for it.

...

Another thing that happens here when these events happen, you have all kinds of speculation that erupts. And there is an ongoing theory -- Mr. Snerdley, correct me if I'm wrong about this. There's an ongoing theory that the shooter himself may in fact be a leftist who writes the manifesto and then goes out and performs the deed purposely to smear his political enemies, knowing he's going to get shot in the process. You know you just can't -- you can't immediately discount this. The left is this insane, they are this crazy. And then if that's exactly what the guy is trying to do then he's hit a home run, because right there on Fox News: "Shooter is an admitted white nationalist who hates immigrants."

I would like to see a psychological assessment of Rush Limbaugh and our loser shooter. I suspect they would be neck and neck when it comes to their lack of attachment to reality.

Fraser Anning got egged today. Couldn't have happened to a nicer person. Meanwhile, Milo Yiannopoulos has been barred from entering Aus following his dickbag comments in response to the Christchurch massacre.
