SJB:

I edited the original post a couple of times to make my intended view clearer.

It was pretty clear even in the original form, unless you were really looking for an interpretation to be offended by, it was a comment about extremism and how it'd be a better place without it.

SJB: Interesting article from one scholars perspective on the difference between ultra-orthodox jews and Zionists.

One Haredi man's view on drafting yeshiva boys | Dovid Kornreich | The Blogs (timesofisrael.com)

You can read more about it on Wikipedia here.

Interesting and informative article. So my comment about Iran on steroids regarding the Haredi was completely wrong.

Haredi tend towards modesty in dress and have rules and regulations about those aspects which are important to them and often required of visitors to their neighbourhoods, and other residents. That aspect does clash with less conservative Israelis from time to time.

Haaretz is responsible for most of Israel's in-depth investigative reporting syndicated to other outlets in Israel and internationally:

Haaretz: Israel Created 'Kill Zones' in Gaza. Anyone Who Crosses Into Them Is Shot. The Israeli army says 9,000 terrorists have been killed since the Gaza war began. Defense officials and soldiers, however, tell Haaretz that these are often civilians whose only crime was to cross an invisible line drawn by the IDF

With Netanyahu's move to close Al Jazeera in Israel this week it is not unreasonable to think he may well move against long established Israeli media organisations citing vague 'security concerns'.

I think even he'd have trouble with Haaretz, it's a high-quality news source, and both Israel's oldest paper and its paper of record. Al Jazeera was a much easier target.

So they have supposedly killed 9,000 Hammas fighters. That leaves between 16,000 and 21,000 left.

No wonder Netanyahu is always claiming victory is around the corner, And the next corner... and the next corner...

Which is exactly what some in the Israeli government wants to happen.

Netanyahu didn't even seem particularly contrite when talking about the murdered aid workers.

It was almost like he was implying 's**t happens' during a war.

Biden in a call with Netanyahu has apparently called for an immediate ceasefire

Reuters: Biden also told Netanyahu that an “immediate cease-fire is essential” and urged Israel to reach such an accord “without delay,” according to the White House, which described the conversation as “direct” and “honest

Then later in the article:

Netanyahu’s office said early Friday that his Security Cabinet has approved a series of “immediate steps” to increase the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza, including the reopening of a key crossing that was destroyed in the Oct. 7 Hamas attack.

That's a quick result. The readout appears to indicate the ceasefire call was related to humanitarian aid provision. Other statements from the Whitehouse indicate they are attempting to convey more pressure for a general ceasefire. That aspect seems a bit weak in practice and basically another 'warning' but hope we can.

That's a nothing result, until it actually happens. The US has been "urging" Netanyahu for a cease-fire for weeks. Until Biden actually cuts off the gravy, he doesn't care. And he knows Biden won't cut off the gravy, because there are too many very powerful people who are either hard-core Zionists, make a ton of money off weapons sales, or both.

Netanyahu must be worried. There's a wet bus ticket on the way.

Biden could have stopped the slaughter weeks ago. In my view he's complicit in the carnage.

A bigger concern for Israelis might be clear preparation for a front in Lebanon. Drills have been regular for some time and the volume seems to be increasing.
