I remember Mr Muldoon having a hissy fit with one journalist and banning him from the press gallery. I think it was Tom Scott but I maybe wrong.

You remember correctly:

It's unclear to me what Scott actually said prior to being ejected. It's not in the clip above and I can find no record of it.

frankv: Reminds me of Muldoon...

I don't recall any instance of Muldoon trying that. I doubt it could be done in New Zealand.

frankv is quite correct - read this extract from "His Way: A Biography of Robert Muldoon" by Barry Gustafson.

Yeah it seems my confidence in New Zealand's democratic institutions is a little misplaced. But not entirely. The example linked above (Muldoon banning the Dominion newspaper from press conferences and from recieving any government material) shows he eventually relented under pressure from the Press Council. 48 days of it is not encouraging tho.

John Key actually had a pretty good angry stare be would pin on reporters every now and again. There were times in his last term when I was thinking he was going to go half Muldoon to get the next election over the line. Didn't happen.

Depends how much gin he had been drinking the night before with Norman Jones.

MikeB4: Things I can change I worry about, things I can't I dismiss. Mr Trump I dismiss.

Nice sentiment - but fascism spreads.

Sadly, plenty of people in NZ support Trump's form of fascism.

If your posts here are a true indicator of your feelings regarding the US I think you need to start redirecting your attention. You seem to have an unhealthy obsession with Mr Trump and that never goes well.

Worry about yourself - not me.

Thanks.

These sorts of posts by you and one other are getting really tiresome. You know what this thread is about, yet you insist on coming in and taking digs at people for wanting to discuss what this thread is about. How about you start redirecting your attention?

From what I recall, though there may have been a "final straw", there'd been an ongoing battle with Muldoon displaying petulance unbecoming of a leader when faced with satire from Tom Scott.

A serious misfire by Muldoon.  Scott won.

How amusing a post having a dig at someone for supposedly having a dig at someone by someone who constantly has digs at folks who have an opposing view.

A dig post coming in 5....4....3....2....

As freitasm keeps reminding us, make it about the issue, not the poster.

OT: Wind has really kicked up here. I wouldn't be surprised if we lose power at any time.

I just watched Donald's Press Sec give his first briefing, pretty much a yelling/screaming match saying all the media is wrong about crowd sizes yet the photos look pretty obvious to me

I can see Press Freedom being a problem

Absolutely. This is precisely what most people posting this thread would like to do, yet there are some who seem intent on demanding that others stop because, in their view, this is either pointless or [insert whatever other reason] (in their opinion, of course).

It's amazing to me that he feels compelled to even make a big deal about it. Lots of people came, he could thank them for their attendance for whatever reason they chose, and make some comment about the passion in the country.

The fact it wasn't the biggest crowd ever.. meh. I keep hoping the weight of the office and the position will eventually get him to stop talking and start doing, but hopes are fading quickly.

I'd like to see him stop with the exaggerating ASAP, it's pretty unbecoming.

When he stops exaggerating, it'll be to tell us that that he's located a WWII bomber on the moon.

If what he was doing was merely "exaggerating" - just make a mental note to downsize what he says, and it might all be okay.

The real problem with him - and it's a damned sight more than "unbecoming" is the fact that he's a pathological liar.

I saw a comment made on CNN which I think summed this up very well: Day 1 where you need to make a statement and be clear about what you are going to do.....and all you can do is get upset about crowd size?

Four years

Lots of ranting
Promises
Dealing with an inept cabinet
Little getting done
Upsets other nations
More ranting
Forced to actually carry out a promise due to public/media backlash
Fires cabinet members on a regular basis
Still nothing gets done
Demos are really active
Still little gets done

Trade is what I want to see where he goes.
