The flipside of not allowing deductions for personal items is it makes the tax system simpler and less prone to abuse and not everyone needs to file a return. We don't need to go down the road of the USA or Greece and allow huge personal deductions in tax returns. There's barely enough net taxpayers as it is.

Ah, but we don't need any high earning immigrants or 'rich pr***s' here, apparently...

I see the Pike River reentry costs are skyrocketing from $23M to $35M. IMO this is a disgusting waste of our money as even when spent it will only get people entry to mine. Recovering will be another whole lot of taxpayers money.

Wouldnt this money be better spent on our Health System or Housing..or anything other than recovering entombed bodies?

If I was a parent or loved one I wouldnt want the remains moved at all, and I would be happy enough knowing they are with their work mates in a fitting tomb.

The parents and loved ones for the most part want the deaths fully investigated. If a serious conviction had been possible maybe they would feel different don't know. As for recovery in the end I'd guess everyone has different feelings about that. I know that many people would find the present situation very hard to live with.

Totally agree with Pumpedd. This was a very expensive vote catcher. and it now seems as if there will be no limit set.

There are people dying every year. Not healthy to carry on like this. Move on like every one else has to.

This isnt going to investigate much. There has been enough investigations and millions upon millions spent. A better place for this 30 off million would be..

Yeah, a great idea in concept. Until you do the figures and calculate that we do not have enough mental health workers to take care of the day to day requirements, let alone to be expected in the future to be available at 100's of police and ambulance distribution points 24 hours a day. We would have needed to employ and train almost double the current amount of mental health workers just to provide a mediocre support service.

Labour now back tracking on doubling the refugee quota. Because, the resources aren't available - the same reason National gave for not doubling it while in government and Labour criticised from opposition.

Hooton repeats the oft-made mistake of linking low productivity in NZ to the effect of wages and "incentivising workers". He's wrong - and should know it. The long term problem with productivity in NZ is due to low investment in productive enterprise, and low savings rates. He needs to get out of that 19th century mindset.

I agree that WFF was a strongly socialist knee-jerk reaction, to a freaking disaster of our own making - the low wage / high cost economy.

As someone who has close links to the medical community, I can tell you that many Doctors from many different parts of healthcare, many whom were pro Labour pre election are now SCREAMING mad about what is being proposed in many many areas of Healthcare for NZ.

The bottom line was, that with as many promises as they made, even the ones they have pared back to barely worth executing, they simply can't afford to do it and not end up in the big hole that certain people predicted. Some are saying they can't do it regardless.

Originally I felt that Labour would be better-placed ideologically to review the healthcare system, but at this point their competence is questionable in my view, and this means they shouldn't touch that until they get their house in order, if they can.

Give them a chance. They have only been in for 6 months, you cant expect miracles after such a short time. Besides Jacinda is having a baby and she deserves some rest. I am very optimistic about this new government. They are doing a lot for this country where national failed.
