I've never really understood how anyone can arrive at the day before polling and still not have decided. You've had at least 3 years to think about it!!

I have no meeting of minds with any of the parties even the closest to what I prefer. Each has a major plank of their campaign that I don't want to support.

Ah well. That's been the case since the first elections I imagine.

You just have to pick whichever one has the most in common unless you start your own party!

Yeah, I voted for the best of an unattractive bunch nationally and a local guy who has no chance of winning. Hope he breaks a 1,000 this time.

I don't think are allowed to campaign today. But I think I know what the red dot in the south island is.

Coffeebaron installed a master filter when he rode down in the red chopper last month. He is one of them.

Because we have elevated racism - a natural human response - to the heights of being some kind of sacred cow.

It's screamed at people on line and in real life as if it is the worst insult imaginable. IMO it simply isn't.

I watched the tv3 and tv1 items on the disruption. Was there another incident? My guess is some particular comment from the crowd or an accompanying National party supporter would have preceded a reaction like that.

I don't agree that racism is a natural human response. That part might be something for another topic.

Glenn Greenwald arrived in New Zealand a little over a week before the country’s general election, armed with damning claims (courtesy of Edward Snowden) that NZ Prime Minister John Key had — despite assurances to the contrary — authorized mass surveillance to be conducted on New Zealanders.

When Greenwald landed, Key was looking a safe-ish, if slightly wobbly bet for re-election. A recent tell all book from NZ investigative journalist Nicky Hager, Dirty Politics, had forced resignations in Key’s government and forced him to admit that he spoke directly with rightwing bloggers, using them as a direct mouthpiece to attack his opponents. If played right, Greenwald’s scoop could have proved extremely damaging for a prime minister people who was losing the support of voters.

Unfortunately, this is Glenn Greenwald we’re talking about. Like Inspector Clouseau trying to safely dispose of a bomb, Greenwald instead managed to trip over himself, lose control of the revelations and actually ended up helping the incumbent prime minister win a “remarkable” third term.

If played right, Greenwald’s scoop could have proved extremely damaging for a prime minister people who was losing the support of voters.

The main problem being the scoop wasn't really a scoop, and Greenwald couldn't back up the claims of mass surveillance on New Zealanders by the GCSB. If you're going to deliver a knockout blow you need to be sure you have some weight being your punch. In my eyes Greenwald ended up looking like the school yard bully who was caught out, all bluster and bravado but nothing else.

To me it appeared he came here with the intention of doing his reporting. Despite appearances I doubt he had a personal mission to change the government which the article assumes.

Probably not, though the person who brought him most certainly did.

Though I don't think Greenwald is that dumb that he couldn't see his invitation to visit at that time as being political motivated and therefore designed to influence the election.
