He's last generation, John and Bill are gone and he was on the slide. And let's not forget his "fiscal hole" blunder.. what a balls up. His political stock was toast, no point in sticking around (hint hint Gerry Brownlee, Nick Smith etc).

Actually experience and guidance of the (slightly) older generation is good, for both parties. Someone posted a clip on this thread the other day of Puala Bennett in question time. Incidentally it was back when Lockwood Smith was speaker. I was watching a debate the other day and Brownlee had to pull up a junior labour speaker three times for wandering off topic. They mightn't be as 'progressive' thinking as a younger MP, but they actually bring a bit of dignity and values into the House...sometimes.

It's far too early to determine if his prediction of a hole is correct or not.

Highly likely it never will. Labour must have just about scaled back their election promises by $11 billion by now. Shrewd move.

Haha, that's a great point.

Maybe he didn't mean 11B deficit, maybe he meant 11B lies.

Amy Adams to Finance Spokesperson. Not sure how I feel about this. As far as I can see, no real finance credentials. It's an area that National supporters would expect a strong performance in. I hope she is up for it.

I am surprised by Joyce actually. He must have known that his leadership bid was an all or nothing situation. I am surprised he ran. I wonder who he had in the back of his mind for Finance, unless he was intending to keep it.

He's got a bit of Muldoon in him, I can see him thinking that Finance of utmost importance and should be held by the Leader.

Yeah. I think so too.

Perhaps someone said to him "give it a shot and if you don't succeed we have a nice job outside politics you'd be great for."?

I really liked him and wish he had stayed. Less style and more substance... not exactly a vote winning combo though, nowadays.

Are you aware that Adams was Associate Finance Minister in the last National Government?

She's not got a big profile in this respect, but she's not unprepared.

Heh, no I actually did not know that. I'd agree about the lack of profile, but good to know she was at least previously in a finance related post.

They have time on their side to make it or break it. I hope they do well.

I heard an Adams interview from yesterday. I thought she was convincing on the topic. You may be pleasantly surprised.

She (Amy Adams) seems to have forgotten what her predecessors, who she deified, inherited when they (John Key and Bill English) came to power in 2008.

The debt was at just five and a half percent of what the country was worth, or GDP, down from 23 percent, and they grew it to around 30 percent, at one point borrowing $380 million a week.

Okay so they had the global financial crisis to cope with and the earthquakes but they also inherited the China free trade deal, signed a month before they came to office. Slashing debt didn't stop the Clark Labour Government breathing life into the ACC corpse and setting up the Cullen fund, now worth around $40 billion without contributions from National.

Perhaps rather than harping on about the balance sheet, Adams should focus her attention on a more balanced society.

Well, that's one way of looking at it.   Here's another  (from parliament's Hansard)

CHRIS BISHOP: I want to start with fiscal strategy, and I want to take members back to late 2008 when National inherited the Treasury benches. Members opposite often turn up in the House and they often skite about the fact that the Labour Government from 1999 to 2008 ran 9 years of surpluses, and that is false. The 2008-09 accounts, when they were produced, produced a $3.9 billion deficit. When we came to office, Treasury was forecasting never-ending Budget deficits and debt to blow out to 60 percent of GDP. These are not National’s numbers; this was the fiscal reality we inherited from a profligate Opposition. Michael Cullen was gleeful.

Hon Annette King: Was it a reality or a prediction?

CHRIS BISHOP: Mrs King’s best mate, Michael Cullen, was gleeful. He went around Parliament saying: “I’ve spent the lot. The money’s gone; I’ve spent the lot.” He used to crow about that—about how there was no money left for anyone to spend. Government spending between 2003 and 2008 increased 50 percent in 5 years. It was simply unsustainable, and we had to spend 7 years getting the books back in order.
