Police I believe have pistols (Glocks) available in their cars if they are on patrol. Locked up.

Parliament has a section of the Diplomatic Protection Service on site who are part of the NZ Police.

I am all for banning guns in NZ altogether (except for sport or farming), as gun incidents in NZ are now a daily problem. We don't want to become like the USA, as it is only a matter of time.

Yes, it was unavoidable. My reasoning is that you can't stop people from making mistakes.People are the weakest link in a safe system.

The brain sometimes forgets under pressure and stressful situations. Remember the Titanic? Or the mars probe a couple of years back when Nasa used imperial and their partner used metric? These are the smartest people on the planet yet make the simplest errors.

Rather than tell me to stop wasting your time you should reply constructively.

Well, this certainly was, don't you think!? At best it was careless, at worst it was criminally negligent. They are very lucky nothing bad happened as a result.

So let's look at some examples of something bad:

1. Child finds gun and shoots someone

2. Adult finds gun and shoots self

3. Gangster finds gun and smuggles it outside

4. Anyone else finds gun and goes on parliamentary cleansing rampage

Whoever left the gun behind is one seriously careless cop, but even so I would doubt the safety was off. A child or ignorant adult can certainly rectify that, but it adds an extra layer of protection. Accidental discharge is unlikely, though certainly not impossible.

I assume there are measures to prevent the smuggling of weapons into Parliament. Would they also detect weapons going out? I don't know but I doubt many patched gang members hang out there. White collar criminals are much more likely, and they usually aren't into guns.

Is a random member of the public likely to go on an opportunistic shooting spree? These days I suppose anything is possible, but it doesn't strike me as likely. I think almost anyone who saw the gun would gasp, go oh my gosh, and immediately call for help. I know I would. I am fairly confident that anyone reading this would. I believe most people would. Very few are likely to see it as an opportunity to do evil. That's just not the way most of us here are wired, and thank goodness for that.

There's an exponential/hyperbolic/asymptotic function between safety and resources. Absolute safety will require 100% resources... i.e. to be absolutely safe, you cannot do anything.

Interesting that the guy who allegedly killed the British MP was arrested in the street apparently unharmed.

If that had been in the US they would probably just have shot and killed him.

At least if he is alive you can find out what his motives were and maybe track down any accomplices.

Not all but most

Glocks are in the passenger foot well locked in a safe

Bushmaster long gun is in the boot in another safe.

or are there other positions as well causing restrictions that make attending to bodily functions difficult?

You've got to be kidding! Any armed cop should be trained that THE most important thing, is ensuring the security of his gun. An Australian Haka type exercise should be run many times a day, automatically (It should be second nature). Given the low incidence of cops that leave their loaded guns in public places, compared to the number of armed officers in the world, indicates

that for a lot of officers, they take this seriously. This officer has failed to adhere to his/her training and as such, has endangered the public, and there should be serious consequences.

I have a similar procedure for checking that I have my wallet, cellphone and keys. I can tell what I am missing by my balance, and a gun weighs a LOT more than any of those things. The police officer was careless, which when it comes to his weapon, is unacceptable.

I do wonder however, if it had been your CHILD that had found that gun, if you would be so blase about the whole unavoidable thing.

What a completely ridiculous thing to say! It's pretty hard to take you seriously after that nonsense.

Did I once say I was perfect? Nope. However, I wouldn't leave my LOADED GUN where someone could access it. If I did, I would expect SEVERE consequences, would make no excuses and accept my punishment.

I am not expecting them to adhere to a standard I wouldn't be prepared to accept myself. Pretty worrying the number of people who have such low standards of conduct.

Even accidents can kill people. A lot of people who cause accidents that kill people, end up in prison, because actions (even accidents) have consequences.

That may be the case where carrying a gun is an extraordinarily rare and special occurrence. For these guys the gun is like carrying your car keys, they do it consistently and it becomes second nature. Ever left your car keys anywhere by mistake? Your phone? Not making excuses, the owner needs their ass kicked good and proper, but I get tired of the american theatrics and armchair experts. And a gun isn't much good unless it's loaded, what else would you expect it to be for an operational weapon? Typically that means a full magazine and no bullet in the chamber. Pull the trigger and nothing would happen, so accidental discharge just from someone grabbing the gun is highly unlikely.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation
