I think you are just stirring here. Why would you expect opposition to get any attention right now? The Government hasn't really done anything. As others have pointed out, they are still unpacking their boxes. I expect much the same as National gets themselves prepared.

Hopefully National do a better job in opposition than the awful job Labour did, but that takes time to arrange, to decide on what to oppose (as compared to Labour who blindly opposed everything without any logical reasoning).

Wow, there many reasons why there maybe mistakes. It must be awesome being infallible.

I have to admit that I was considering an apology to you in the other thread. An apology because I may have come across as assuming (in your eyes only) that I find you repulsive when, indeed, all I saw was nothing less than a repulsive attitude towards others in your rather obnoxious post.

Sadly you have outdone yourself this time. I hope you put this right!

Do you think there will be a leadership tussle? Who is a likely candidate?

Changing leaders creates a vacuum of history and trust - things bill english has built up over his decades in parliament. On the other hand, there is those 2 defeats.

I dunno.

Is it worth holding onto him and hoping history doesn't repeat (again) ?

Why has Judith Collins been promoted to the opposition front bench? Is it to keep her quiet and supportive of Bill English? To head off a probable challenge for the leadership by Paula Bennett? Or has Bill 'anointed her' as his chosen successor, because he realises he hasn't got long to go as leader of the opposition?

Then take the next term to build up the profile of a new leader ready for him to hand it off for the next election. With the loss I suspect we will see him step down before he is taken down. Wouldn't be surprised if National had a new leader by Christmas.

I'm with Fred99 on this, a change of leadership would be folly given they don't have a natural replacement. I think they should have conversations and meetings and work out a strategy, work toward grooming a replacement.

Why has he promoted Judith Collins to the opposition front bench? It's making her a rival to any leadership challenge by Paula Bennett IMO...

I think Judith Collin's would be the only person that would put up a leadership challenge, and by promoting her Bill has taken the wind out of her sails. I think (and hope) that the rest of Nats front bench has enough experience and hindsight to see that there's nothing more powerful in the public eye than consensus on leadership, and nothing that destroys faith in the party as much as fights over leadership (labour is sitting across the bench as a prime example of that). if they want to change, fight it out inside, out of the public view.

From Bill English:

Bill English has revealed the roles his MPs will hold as National "pushes the button on Opposition" - saying the party will use its size to frustrate progress for the new Government.

Parliament resumes next week and English today announced the portfolios he has assigned to his team, including a big promotion for Judith Collins.

"You should expect more tension and more pressure in the Parliament, and particularly through the select committee process. Because we are the dominant select committee party," English said.

"And that is going to make a difference to how everything runs - it's not our job to make this place run for an incoming Government that is a minority.

"You will get to understand that it is a minority Government with a majority Opposition, and the Greens as the support party. That is how we are going to run it...we have no obligation to smooth [Labour's] path. None whatsoever."

In other words, because they are the biggest party and that will be reflected in select committees, they will do whatever they can to obstruct the government - "just because" they are the biggest.

Good to see you are commenting about something you probably just read in the news and seem to have no prior knowledge of or have done little research? Labour and the Greens campaigned on cancelling the East West Link. It was up until cancellation going through a Board of Enquiry on whether it should proceed, and by all accounts it was not being look upon favorably. In any case the decision to cancel spending $1.8billion was well forecast - just because you didn't pay attention doesn't mean it didn't happen.

She has a personal style well suited to being in opposition.

She made Twyford look like a chump on TV while seemingly being motherly toward him and also made Nash look like a fool and he wasn't even there.
