So you would prefer we tax Swifts, tax Hybrids, and only allow a subsidy to pure EV's?

We could add a tax to all petrol cars, but make the tax on lower emitting ones less than the higher emitting ones.

We could add a tax to all petrol cars, but make the tax on lower emitting ones less than the higher emitting ones. And the discount on pure EVs should be a lot higher than it is on plug in hybrids.

Yes you could do that, which is what the Govt has done, I'm sure  the tax is lower on Swifts than Mustangs? How does your suggestion work if a hybrid gets a discount as its an ICE car?. Either we support pure EV's or we support lower emissions.

I dont get how you seperate Swifts from Hybrids

There is no tax on Suzuki Swifts, in fact a discount of $2,800 is proposed on these purely petrol vehicles. Must turn off computer and go and earn some money so I can afford an EV

And what about PHEV's? Should we also break those down into ones that travel purely in an urban environment (i.e. in EV mode) versus those that travel on the open road (i.e. in ICE mode)? Or do we use some sort of amalgamated metric to calculate the subsidy (i.e. EV+ICE mode l/100Km)?

I think the alternative is getting rather complicated.

It is. A Swift in town causes less emissions than a Hybrid once the 50km of battery is used

So, the back to the drawing board says, lets tax gas guzzlers, and give $8000 discounts to pure EV's. Inside that lets benefit the lower emissions as well, so petrol cars such as a Swift or Hybrid get a lower discount. If anyone has an issue with a Swift getting a discount then we can remove that, and also remove hybrids.

In my view, these car genres dont overlap. The Swift buyer wasn't a Leaf buyer and so on. We can attack each group fairly, as each group reduces emissions, which is the SOLE point of this policy.

So, do we tax or discount Swifts and Hybrids?

We get more punitive on SUVs, do nothing to Swifts, and we discount hybrids but not as much as pure EVs. We adjust the RUC so that a pure EV pays decently less tax than a hybrid to account for the zero emissions.

But Swifts are petrol, Hybrids are petrol. Range wise hybrids are 90% petrol, and larger engines than a Swift.

RUC is an issue. A hybrid has to get RUC free petrol at the pump. Then its the same status as an EV so then charge all the kms. The only complication and its minor is that cars with the pink round sticker on the windshield are the free RUC rate. Or some means to track the RUC costs for the $70 fill up which credits that cars RUC bill.

You blokes are going to have your minds blown when you find out there's a hybrid Swift in some markets that puts up about 1000km a tank.

I feel sorry for the car dealers, like EV Central, who invested early in EV's.

They'll have to somehow survive till the bill passes.

It's a bit tragic that early adopter are penalized by the government's slow actions.

I get that, but why is its this Govts fault?  The previous could have written the policy in stone? And we would be well on the way?

I dont mind political banter, but it sees it was no issue, now all of a sudden it is? And I still can't find the previous Govt alternative. Politics aside, if they had an alternative then we can thrash out what's best.

I did a search for Nationals policy as that's relevant. We need two choices to look at, to evaluate, but all I could find is "we will help climate change" Its like 2008.

IMHO its bipartisan. Its about us.

Hate to bring facts into it, but our Camry Hybrid does better real world gas mileage than our Swift. I can’t understand people when they say “tax all petrol cars”, tax makes up a dollar in the cost of every litre. Use more, pay more.

What happens when after 50km the battery is out? Id expect a hybrid to use less gas if you can manage the battery most of the time. But if you are going on a 50km + trip, or running around all day, then the Swift at a lower mpg would do better. It isnt a Swift vs Hybrid issue, its that if they use gas they are simolar and should be treated similar as they both emit CO2, but they are lower emission vehicles

My pick is that hybrids will be the big winner. They are affordable, and they get a small but noticeable % discount.
