You can have reasonably big sections and still have somewhat effective public transport but it requires continuous investment.

Most major NZ cities had extensive tram networks that were removed in the 1950s. These types of decisions saved money in the short term and completely ruined the prospects for having integrated transport networks.

Where mass public transport is available it works and is well patronised. For years the right ranted on about "Len Browns Train Set." Funnily enough once modern, reliable electric trains were available passenger numbers went through the roof. The northern busway was exactly the same and will be at capacity in 10 years.

That won't happen partly because the hard right dickheads who cry about tax drown out everyone else.

Melbourne has a fairly good public transport network, doesn't it? Rail, trams and buses (I dunno if the ferries are any good though).

Yip. It's no European good but still pretty effective. Approximately 20% of commuter journeys in Melbourne are by public transport.

They didn't get rid of their trams and they are a brilliant way to get around the CBD.

There's a vast difference between Melbourne and Auckland. Partly because it's a city ~3x the population of Auckland. If you want to compare public transport infrastructure with Aus, probably better to look at Brisbane or Perth.

Add "Find every excuse to commit potential homicide against pedestrians, including the weak and infirm!" and multiply that by 100 times for Auckland.

You are right, sort of. Both Brisbane and Perth have decent multimode transport systems of different flavours. I think for the purposes of what's possible looking at all cities with decent transport systems are important.

The reason why I say sort of is this problem has been built over several generations, it'll take similar amounts of time to tackle. By then Auckland is probably 3 million people and the Melbourne/Sydney comparisons are more valid.

Perth completely overhauled and upgraded their network in the 1990s and now it's one of the best in Australia, and continually expanding too.

Better now than after/if they are elected. We wouldn't want 3 years of disruption due to MP's behaving badly *after* being elected :)
