Wish I had $165B to lose.

PowerBall $20 million this Saturday

Just got to win 8000 of those. Except that at one every 3 months, I'd have to live another 2000 years.

Musk is not well-liked in San Francisco; his lawyers so say.

Fortune: Elon Musk really wanted to have his security fraud trial moved out of San Francisco. A judge just crushed that dream

Tesla Inc. Chief Executive Officer’s Elon Musk’s request to get his upcoming securities fraud trial moved out of San Francisco was rejected by a judge, who overrode a spirited argument that Musk faces a biased jury pool in the Bay Area.

The decision means the high-stakes civil trial moves forward with jury selection next week.

Musk argued the jury pool is biased against him, citing about 200 returned juror questionnaires showing that 82% of all the prospective panelists in the Bay Area who have an opinion of the billionaire view him negatively.

The trial centers on Musk’s tweets in 2018 about taking Tesla private. His lawyers argued much of the bias he faces in San Francisco concerns his use of the social media platform, and his honesty on it, and they emphasized that his reputation in the city has been damaged by negative reporting about his make-over of Twitter Inc.

To make any sense of this, I need to know what proportion of the prospective jurors actually have an opinion on him. For example, If only 1/8 (12.5%) have an opinion, then that means 25 people out of the 200 have an opinion. In which case, you get exactly 82% if 22 out of those 25 were negative... i.e. 22 out of the 200 total poll population, or 11%. So one person, maybe two, on the jury. Which his lawyers can challenge. The fact that his argument is based on that particular statistic, rather than the actual percentage of negative thinkers, implies that the "don't care" percentage is large. So I'm with the judge on this one.

I wonder what proportion of potential jurors elsewhere have an opinion of the billionaire, and how many of those view him negatively?

I guess I have an opinion, but it flicks to and fro between "awesome" (Tesla, SpaceX, StarLink) and "prat" (Phillipines cave, Twitter, covid, this).

There were a number of layoffs in SF. That's not going to help in many cases.

Futurism: Elon Musk now denies that his family's emerald mine existed, in spite of previously bragging about it

Elon Musk is denying claims that his family owned an emerald mine, even though he was bragging about it less than a decade ago.

"The fake emerald mine thing is so annoying (sigh)," Musk tweeted over the weekend. "Like where exactly is this thing anyway!?"

As many pointed out, the mine was in Zambia — at least, according to Musk himself back in 2014.

"Musk and his family seem particularly sensitive about shaping the narrative about their history lately, especially around the emerald mine," tech critic Paris Marx tweeted in response. "They act like they’ve never heard of it before, even though he bragged to Forbes about it in 2014."

Included in the post is a screenshot a 2014 Forbes interview conducted by freelancer Jim Clash in which Musk, then more broadly considered a wunderkind, shared an off-handed anecdote about his now-estranged father Errol Musk's alleged mine.

"This is going to sound slightly crazy," the multi-hyphenate billionaire is quoted as saying, "but my father also had a share in an Emerald mine in Zambia."

But then it would have cost $48 million and only been able to take 1 person at a time as they ride in a customised model S.

For those of us who have been studiously avoiding the whole Elon/Twitter mess, this (The Verge) gives an interesting overview of how the whole thing proceeded, so at least you can vaguely understand what is going on.

Musk NEEDS Trump, Twitter is bleeding money and users.

Trump NEEDS twitter , Truth Social is a dead end, and he really want that megaphone to be able to attack all the legal proceedings against him and the people involved. If Trump gets back on twitter and acts like he always does, People will die as his supporters attack the "Trump haters".

Trump and Musk both need to be told they will be accessories to murder if this happens.

Nothing a judge and jury hate more than a unremorseful, arrogant, trivializing and unashamed testimony. I think it'll be taken into account if found guilty.

The Guardian: Musk tells Tesla trial: ‘Just because I tweet doesn’t mean people believe it’

Elon Musk testified on Friday as part of a trial over a 2018 tweet in which he claimed to have “funding secured” to take Tesla private, a tweet that shareholders allege cost them millions in trading losses.

The Tesla CEO appeared in a San Francisco federal courtroom and defended himself by saying that “just because I tweet something does not mean people believe it or will act accordingly”.
...
The class-action trial in San Francisco federal court centers on allegations that the Tesla CEO lied when he sent the tweet, costing investors. Earlier on Friday morning, investor Timothy Fries told the jury how he lost $5,000 buying Tesla stock after Musk sent the tweet at the center of the lawsuit.

The case is a rare securities class-action trial and the plaintiffs have already cleared high legal hurdles, with the US judge Edward Chen ruling last year that Musk’s post was untruthful and reckless.
