Was in context of the stuff.co.nz and Campbell live polls showing completely different results, 64% for vs 75% against.

I reckon it's about time there was the ability for public referendums to be performed online for such matters, as even though the bill passed with a 64% majority it may not have reflected what majority of the population on NZ actually wanted.

This is a tough one because if we want a poll on every difficult issue we decide on then we'd never make a decision. This is what the politicians are there to do: represent our views. If they voted wrongly then they would end up out on the street come next election. We'll see if that happens and then know if the majority on NZ wanted this bill or not.

So we have had this foisted upon us as it is only fair that marriage be an option to all people who love each other.

Hmmm.

By that rationale then its only a matter of time before polygamous marriage is also recognised in NZ law?

The force is strong with this one!

Did you feel a strange compulsion to become gay and get married when this law was passed?

By that rationale everyone already became gay in 1988.

Well, get petitioning, start a website and get the ball rolling! Someone has to start the campaign!
Oh wait. You are just making stuff up. What about people marrying animals? It's only a matter of time!

Cheers,
Joseph

Wait, you mean it's only allowed?  Based on all the handwaving from the anti-crowd, I thought it was going to be compulsory to immediately marry a same sex partner when the law was passed or something.

Almost like... they were complaining about something that doesn't affect them and is none of their business?  How truly odd.

I had hoped this sarcasm and other such nonsense might stop once the bill was passed.

I agree but the smugness of some will take a while to wear off and those that like taking free shots will revel in it all.

That's the last of it from me.

Ultimately, I still hold that I simply don't understand the point of the opposition.  It has precisely zero effect on the existing institution with the sole exception of making it more inclusive, and I personally hold inclusiveness to be a value worth pursuing (having been a bit of a social outlier myself through my younger years, though not for that reason).

The whole debate, to me, is silly.  I can't see why it was even an issue at all.  Their relationships were legal, why should they not be legally recognised as well?  Sure I've heard all the "for the children" arguments, but those fall flat in the face of evidence that single parents can raise children too.
