And now we have Judith Collins calling Kiwibuild a waste of time. But I didn't see her Government do anything about the housing crisis while they were in power? In fact I seem to recall John Key saying there wasn't a housing crisis?

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12158247

BE stated that in the third leaders debate pre election. As house prices had stabilised. They had. But if a housing crisis means affordability, then its still alive and well

Kiwibuild is better than nothing. You also need to factor in that due to affordability there is a huge gap between those who want a house and those who can afford one, plus with the rising prices that were occurring, many had jumped in as soon as they could, so there are probably less buyers now as they have their house, many of the rest  cannot afford one.

What gets me is the number of builders that went bust, they surely must have had a lot of work on, or maybe there wasnt that much of a building demand as land is so costly, and that the housing price boom was on existing homes, and likely that some builders jumped in big time building spec homes, as per those in a neighbouring subdivision near me (Wigram, ChCh)

Wasnt just Collins..didnt she just agree with the what some of the so called experts are saying including the opinionists who wrote it?

IMO this scheme was flawed from the beginning and when they set the income cap at $180k they lost the support of a lot of people. The election campaign was all about affordable housing for the less well off and this doesnt meet those needs. Should just convert it to a lot more HNZ rentals and some high end properties to help subsidise.

Was another rush job.

There were affordable housing ballots under National, SHAs (which the Council pushed back on) and first home buyer grants available under National. Not anywhere near the scale required, but saying "They didn't do anything!" is a played out talking point that's totally incorrect.

As it turned out, the Kiwibuild houses ended up being pretty much the same price as the Axis ballots, despite Labour promising they would be substantially cheaper during the election. If you're so upset about housing, that's the place to start pouring your scorn.

The SHAs were a gigantic flop and did nothing to alleviate the housing crisis or improve affordability. Some evidence suggests it did the opposite.

Also, it's not completely true that John Key said there wasn't a housing crisis. He said there was - back when Labour were in power! Once National got into government, prices rose, affordability worsened, ratios worsened, but magically there was no longer a housing crisis!

Have I missed a lot of news or has Simon Bridges gone very quiet?

The SHAs never got a chance because the Councils basically voted to stall them to the point where they couldn't really build anything.

The claim was "National did nothing", which is demonstrably false. In fact, I'd say they did far more than Labour did in the years when house prices rose fastest of all.

Ok let's play the fact game. National denied there was a housing crisis.

They took no actions that fixed it.

When National wanted to they overruled councils and imposed policy on them.

These facts are demonstrably true.

Why would National *fix* something they said wasn't broken?

networkn: Why would National *fix* something they said wasn't broken?

In line with your other nasty post, please define housing crisis. We all know National denied it existed. BE affirmed that in the third leaders debate, IMO it was as the house prices are not increasing which was correct. Is it a fact that we have plenty of houses? Not from what I have read. Is it a fact that there is no affordability problem? Its gone from 3+ to 10+ average salary over the years. We can debate why that occurred, but IMO its a fact.

There is a housing crisis

Doesn't bother me as I have an almost 7 figure almost freehold home, you probably do too. I had my first home at 19. Doesnt affect me at all, but it does bother me for many young ones. The Kiwi mantra of your own home is merely a dream now for many

There was no nasty post, I think you might have got your wires crossed or are projecting something that doesn't exist.

I am simply saying, that if National believed there wasn't a housing problem, why would they take steps to remediate it? Do you do unncessary repairs on your house? I wouldn't think so. I am NOT saying they were right or wrong, I am simply pointing out as far as National was concerned there wasn't an issue so why would they "fix" it?

This is all very offtopic. None of this is anything to do with Simon Bridges.

I have already provided what National did in response to house prices. Feel free to continue to make stuff up but please don't call it 'facts'.

Please tell me what I made up?

John Key did deny there was a housing crisis.

National didn't fix it.

When National wanted to ignore councils (Auckland supercity, Christchurch etc) it did.

I have never disputed they didn't fix it. You're the one saying they did "nothing". That's a very different suggestion and is definitely not interchangeable.

Calling me out as making a childish post is nasty. I have since responded to this so called childish post.

And as bolded, you are doing it again.

I cannot accept that National or whoever may have been in power would not see there was and is a housing crisis, that's mere politicking. Off course of there was no issue, nothing to fix, but thats bypassing the issue. There was and is a housing crisis, and it was not discussable during a term or campaign.

While you are not saying they are right or wrong (fence sitting?) they were wrong and knew it. One of a small number of reasons why I did not vote Labour, I voted Non National.

As has been stated this is off topic. Apologies for my contribution to that!
