Dealt with severely by the speaker? Don't make me laugh. Trevor Mallard has barely had a cross word for the coalition despite multiple infringements.

You obviously dont recall how Mallard dealt to Tau Henare a few years back.

This is holding the Government and country to ransom. I gather the Union movement does not like Labour led Governments, if they keep this up it will be a one term coalition.

I assume they all see Jacinda as a soft touch...

Only people not getting the help they need is the really low income people. I had to laugh to see a teacher say he couldnt make ends meet on his salary...wow.

They have been offered around $10k each per annum and they go on strike...and they say its not about the money.

They do deserve a decent pay round, but it seems they doent know when its enough.

If the Government caves in to their demands for the pay increase they should add some conditions......

1. The increase pushes up the grade ceilings and not across the board. Progression is based on performance assessments and KPIs (like the rest of the population)

2. Leave reduced to 4 weeks annual leave to be taken at christmas time (like large chunks or the population)

3. During school holidays teachers are required to run school holiday programmes at the schools for workings parents.

4. If not doing school holiday programmes teachers be required to attend training and development.

The appointments issue is not a trivial affair. This is part of open government and anti corruption. Every New Zealander should be very concerned about this. It damages parliaments and the country's reputation. This is now two Cabinet Ministers in the Coalition, is this just the tip of an iceberg and there are more incidents waiting to be revealed? That last statement of mine examples the affect these incidents have on perceptions and suspicions that generate. If it generates within NZ it will be generated abroad with our trading partners.

Jacinda Ardern has to take this very seriously and in line with what happened with Claire Curran, Shane Jones must to be relieved of his portfolios anything short throws a bad light on the integrity of the Coalition, Parliament and New Zealand.

If this is a new process I'm willing to give them a bit of slack on this one. Very different from the Curren issue which was clearly intended to mislead parliament as far as I can tell - diary or no diary.

Imo the government should just do what the greens do and make minister's diaries public:

https://www.greens.org.nz/news/press-release/green-party-ministers-open-diaries-public

It is clear now that government minister diaries are subject to parliamentary questions and that opposition parties will always request them. Might as well make those diaries public as the Greens do and save parliament's question time for the important stuff instead. Build in whatever current delay is present as a max time - if you really have to - and it's done.

LOL

Better plan to import tens of thousands of fluent English-speaking immigrant teachers from Nowhereistan who'll be happy to do that.

One of the things I'd hate most about being a teacher, apart from the lousy pay, having to deal with stupid helicopter parents, the mass of obligatory paperwork, kids who've got all kinds of massive issues, the daft idea of school boards comprised of real estate agents and used car salesmen providing governance, the delusion that anybody could come up with meaningful KPIs - and measure them, is that posts like yours express an attitude that probably explains why few talented people bother to enter the profession - and many of them leave.

People who know nothing about education always seem to have the strongest views.  Dunning-Kruger.

I have two family members and a close friend who are teachers, two primary and one secondary. I have talked at length with them. They do not support the strike action and they believe the Union claims are excessive.

edit: if you support the Union claims how do you suggest the Government fund it?

By taxing people who don't get payrises for being in their jobs for a certain number of years.

This governments decision to make Pike River a political issue and to enter again at a cost of 38m which I bet will be higher is a complete disgrace.

If someone gets hurt or killed in this attempt, Jacinda and Little should step down and face criminal charges.

I blame the unions and the teachers. The offer seems reasonable. Assuming they have fallen well behind over recent years, a catchup can't be done overnight.

There was no point in striking under National. Under Labour, its a definite option, but both the unions and teachers are going too far. I'd like to know how genuine the strikes are, in as far as needing a better settlement, as compared to flexing the muscles. Even if the Govt thought, ok we can offer more, they now cannot, as that feeds the union, who needs to be cut down. They are there to look after employees, not enjoy a power play.

1. There is no more money.

2. We will import teachers

The families who lost loved ones don't think so. If National had done the right thing at the time Labour wouldn't have to now.

The most expensive memorial of all time.

I read somewhere recently that quite a number of the families actually want their loved ones to lie in the tomb undisturbed, but clearly are not being noticed at all.
