Come on guys you can do better than this stupid bickering in a time like this

What we should do in my opinion is contact Media Organisations and ask them not to report on the trial that will eventually take place I see the PM has already stated she will not mention his name

Lets give him no chance to air his moronic views. No access to phones or computers etc. Don't report on anything he has to say

Context. You are creating a wild exaggeration to marginalise the overall issue

In what way am I marginizaling the issue?

I am saying violence is not ok. Both parties were wrong, clearly one far more than the other.

If the laws don't work, change them, prioritize them, assign more resources to prosecution.

This would be a good use of any energy people want to spend on this topic... I have thought about this a lot and am not sure about the legalities of a closed courtroom and whether our "news" outlets would be prepared to give minimal coverage in the name of trying to minimise the exposure of this person and his values.

I would like to see a closed court, no public, no cameras, only a couple of pool reporters to just confirm progress of events, and then see the media report only process updates ("prosecution called x witnesses, defence called y witnesses, jury retired etc).

Unfortunately I don't think our media outlets have it in them to do this. I bash them a lot for their seemingly total lack of decency in going after clicks, but if there's any major event that might shock them into behaving with the greater good in mind then this is it.

Go on media, I dare you. All get in a room together, now, and figure out between yourselves how LITTLE coverage you can give the alleged perpetrator and his trial.

Do it.

Cheers - N

What I feel we need is Police to have access to social engineering, much as they have access to telco's, for the sole purpose to track down these deviants. but that raises the issue of privacy, freedom, censorship, internet freedom if a certain range of activities are deemed ok to use the internet to delve into them. If not, then we just guard everything and wait for the next one?

I would just note that politicians in this country have been egged, mudded, poisoned, and even dildoed, and none have felt the need to strike back. That is the difference between a civilised society and a primitive one.

Just because they didn't retailiate, doesn't make the attacks on them any less acceptable.

And if the egg hits me in the eye and blinds me? Still not violent? Still not assault?

This is totally OTT.

If you bother to watch the video, you will see that Egg Boy slapped the MP on the back of his head, with a raw egg in his open palm.

There was no possibility of bodily injury (except to Egg Boy).   😦

We are arguing different points. I am saying it's violence. Low end violence, but not something we should be cheering on and encouraging.

If James Shaw had been egged instead of punched in the face the other day, would that be ok too?

I like our PM!  She's being praised in the media for the way she's dealing with this - globally - as a "leader for our times" and for showing "what real leadership is: sympathy, love, and integrity".

(quoted text copied from overseas news headlines)

I can't imagine her "egging" anybody (literally or metaphorically)!

She even put the evil POTUS Trump in his place with dignity!  I wish I had that skill.

I notice a couple of commentators on this forum have legal experience. What is the procedure in trials? Do Media have to report what is happening or do they just do this out of public interest?

This silly bickering is pointless. Think of the fifty lives that have been taken and think again of the little three year old boy who was  taken by this monster. This bickering is a deflection, it divides us and that was one of the intentions of the monster. Don't forget the fifty and their families, don't forget that little boy, don't let the monster win.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Apart from the tangent this thread has taken, I completely agree with you on this. I would gladly see a complete shut-down of all publicity around the trial and anything else relating to the attack. Unfortunately, given the international attention this has received, I don't know how that would be possible. All we can do is plead with all media to show exceptional restraint. Maybe it would help if the Muslim community makes a formal request, perhaps even to the United Nations. Hopefully media outlets would then feel constrained to respect it. I don't think this can be covered by legalities or suppression orders. The only hope is appealing to people's sense of decency.

Maybe we could start by asking those who are complaining about the ISP blocks that have been put into place to pause for a moment and consider the bigger picture. This is not about your free speech rights. There is something much bigger at play. Hopefully you can see that if you stop and think about it.

Maybe someone could also start a petition to request our media and Internet platforms to go slow. If enough people sign it, possibly they might be willing to exercise some restraint.
