Anyone can be a leader, the current elections are a popularity contest with whoever is saying what the people want to hear being the winner.

That is a failing system. The people being voted in should have relevant experience and know the area they about to take control of.

A Meritocracy would enable that to happen while still giving freedom to vote, the only restriction being that the people running to be elected will have the ability to successfully run their sector.

A senior medical director with 30 years experience in NZ would be better suit to be the Minister of Health instead of the current Minister of Health who was a Credit Analyst and has had no medical experience.

I LOVE the royal family.. Wills is so handsome and Kate's so beautiful.. and they're like so.... ROYAL!

One time I slept in a ditch for 3 days to get a good spot and Wills came by in a car.. and he LOOKED at me... OMG I scweemed and scweemed and scweemed..

Who said that a Meritocracy is based solely on IQ? Merit can include leadership or anything else.

Actually, I don't know that the 'President' needs to be a leader. The Governor General functions essentially as an auditor, and the 'President' could be the same.

The most important aspect is that (a) they're independent of the Govt, and (b) can stop the Govt from doing wrong, whilst (c) allowing the Govt to govern.

Shouldn't be all that hard.....

Guess what, most tourists in NZ are from Asian countries who don't care about the British royals (or know nothing about them).

most asians are die hard fans of Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea ... they learn English from watching footy, could probably recognise God save the Queen when it is blasted at Wembley before the FA Cup final and they probably know who the Queen is, although perhaps not necessarily her title.

I agree and support that 100%. Have a look at one presentation here for edit : (removed link, although this presentation was found via Google search, I dont think it is appropriate) Wellington Emergency (this is an old presentation, things has not improved at all)

FYI: I never drink alcohol and not interested in alcoholic drink at all.

Im fine with this, its like what one every so many years. But if the tax payers are paying, but i would like to see then more with the tax payers, none of this hanging out with our MP's and PM's dinner stuff! how about dinner with the folks that are paying for your trip.

I have no interest in the Royal Tour, but as the saying goes: "It pays to advertise".

One Million for the international publicity NZ has received from the Royal Tour is a bargain.

And it's not just tourists, it's also exported products. There will be an increase in the sale of NZ produced goods during and immediately after the tour, and many people will like what they bought and continue to buy more.

Plus I wouldn't call it a holiday. If my holidays were anything like the Royal Tour, then I think I'd always stay at home.
