Geektastic:

From today's Times

"The FTSE 100 index regained all its losses since the referendum result, rising 6.3 per cent from Monday to close at 6,360.06 yesterday."

But also, "The FTSE 250 - which contains more UK-focused companies - closed 3.2% higher on Wednesday, but still remains more than 7% below its pre-Brexit level." So, in other words, it's far from recovered.

Possibly not coincidental with growing acceptance that if the UK is going to have any hope of continued access to European markets, then they aren't going to be able to close borders.

Bank shares are still tanked, the GBP is still tanked, and the reason for recovery in the index (which due to the pound tanking is not a recovery in market value) is probably more due to the stated intention to print money - rather than any serious belief that "things are okay".

Agree with both above. Adding that markets tend to go up and down - on the way down.

This is far from resolved and it is still a serious crisis.

I doubt it will be resolved by a new Conservative PM replacement.

I would expect to see the pound settle around the nz$1.20/us$1.00over the next 5 years when the imports and exports stabilise.

I might point out that the UKs official interest rate is 0.5% down from just over 14% in 1989 and it is one of the fastest growing economies at the moment which I would expect to see continue in the next 5 years but at slower rate.

Michael Gove has announced his candidacy for leader of the Conservatives. And so has Theresa May. This is likely to scupper Boris's chances of being PM.

May says 'Brexit means Brexit' - i.e. no re-think. Also no general election before that scheduled for 2020. 'The people have spoken and we will leave the EU'. Sounds like good plain speaking and common-sense thinking.

May's speech today is initially seen as very stateswomanlike and she becomes a likely shoo-in for leader and PM.

Yep, she's taken a very clear stance

"

"Brexit means Brexit," she told a news conference.

"The campaign was fought, the vote was held, turnout was high and the public gave their verdict. There must be no attempts to remain inside the EU, no attempts to rejoin it through the back door and no second referendum."

Lord Ashcroft? I've heard that name - IIRC he's the guy that for some reason has quite an affinity for NZ and he put up a reward for the return of stolen war medals from Waiouru army museum - &/or something to do with buying Les Munro's Dambuster medal for NZ when LM wanted to auction it ...?

Aside from the hair, it is really not fair to compare Boris to Trump. They are very different people.

It would be interesting to know what price Boris extracted from others as payment for not muddying the waters.

Yep, you could add another horseperson, that is, who ever is PM in Australia. It does not matter who it is or when they are all interchangeable

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
