I certainly expected him to win the next election and then stand down with a year or so afterwards.

It's been interesting to hear all the lefties say it's Andrew Little's best Xmas present but I beg to differ. Labour won't win with Little as leader but nobody was going to challenge before an election that they were going to lose. My pick is early next year he'll be rolled.

Agree, now that they've got a new window of opportunity. They'll probably wait to see who takes over before they do anything.

I was extremely surprised he got made leader in the first place honestly.

Text would have helped. Not sure what you mean by this. Is it that John Key is Dorothy who killed the witch as it was used this way in the past? Or that John Key is the witch?

John? Good morning. It's Julian at Coutts. Just wanted to remind you that your portfolio stands at $100 million now."

"G'day Julian. Thanks - I had forgotten about that. I think I'll take some time out to spend some of it as this job I have now is a thankless task where I spend most of my life between a rock and a hard place and get no thanks for it."

Too early to ask Winston Peters to put his hand up and offer for the job?

Gareth Morgan will be excited , Andrew Little will be angry, Winston Peter's will be looking for the wine boxes and we may for a while get a rest from the Trump circus.

Plus one.

Over the last 20+ years im sure he could have done better than 50% of our leaders. And actually controlled immigration and the housing market.

Gareth will be busy.  He's launched a party devoid of policy - probably just wasted the last month writing policy to launch early next year, with the annoying possibility that he'll have to start again from scratch.

We'll know if we've avoided the Trump circus when we find out if the PM of Taiwan's call of congratulations to our new PM appointee was directed to voicemail.

Very true he was quite good at foreign affairs in the Labour coalition

Interesting (well I think it is, a bit) to compare the comments in this discussion with the comments under the relevant article in The Guardian - much more of the good riddance there.

Can't say I'll miss him.

Don't even joke about that. Many American friends of mine treated Trump's tilt at the Presidency as a similar jokeworthy idea. They're not laughing now.

I'd like to think we're not dumb enough to ever elect Peters, but these are strange times we're living in.
